Omonia vs. Man United result, highlights & analysis as Rashford and ... (Sporting News AU)

Manchester United made hard work of their long Europa League trip to Cyprus in midweek as Erik ten Hag's side narrowly beat Neil Lennon's Omonia Nicosia.

Omonia Nicosia play host to Manchester United at the Tsirio Stadium in Limassol, Cyprus. The ground is slowly filling up with Omonia supporters eager not to miss the opportunity for their team to take on one of the biggest clubs in world football. 14th min: Ronaldo goes up for a header and Héctor Yuste accidentally collides with him in the air. 43rd min: A ball is lofted over the top to Ronaldo but he can't control it and Fabinho gathers. Erik Ten Hag left him out of the 6-3 drubbing to City, saying he didn't call him off the bench "out of respect." But he decides to be unselfish and square it back to Fernandes as the goalkeeper came rushing it out but his pass is behind his teammate. He picks up the ball in the box, turns his man like he's not even there, and then attempts a cheeky toe poke into the goal but it's blocked. He hit the post from six yards out when it seemed harder to miss, he blasted a free-kick over the bar, found the side netting and curled one a few inches wide of the post in the dying minutes. Manchester United came from a goal down to beat Omonia in Europa League action as substitutes Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial came to Erik ten Hag's rescue with the goals. Bruno Felipe picked the ball up and ran, and with United outnumbered, he played the perfect pass to Karim Ansarifard who took a touch and rifled his shot past De Get. 48th min: Plenty of United possession in the final third so far but it's not quite clicking. United are caught sleeping at the back and Panayiotou converts a cross from close range past De Gea.

Cristiano Ronaldo in limbo: Manchester United legend unwanted by ... (ESPN)

He's one of the greatest players of all time but nobody appears interested in Cristiano Ronaldo -- ESPN's Insider Notebook has the latest.

Guardiola was proven right and both Foden and [Kevin De Bruyne](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/134947/Kevin-De-Bruyne) took advantage of gaps in the United back four, created by Martinez drifting across to Haaland, to tear Ten Hag's team apart. [Argentina](/soccer/team?id=202) international, who stands 5-foot-9 and was due to mark the 6-foot-4 Haaland. [6-3](/soccer/report?gameId=637903) having raced into a 4-0 half-time lead at the Etihad. But sources told ESPN that City's game-plan centred on Martinez being so preoccupied with marking Haaland that he would leave gaps for Foden to exploit in the left side of United's back four. The Nerazzurri, who announced losses of €140m last week, can't afford to let Skriniar leave on a free transfer so they could be open to accepting PSG's new offer. The move was a non-starter given just how late Chelsea's interest appeared as there was so little time to identify and sign a replacement. But they will need to get their act together much earlier before the deadline to land their man. But sources close to the club insist it remains unclear how much of a market there would be for the 37-year-old in January. Xavi Hernandez is also open to the return of his former teammate. The Dutchman has already been told it is highly unlikely there will be money to spend until next summer, reducing the possibility that a replacement could be found for the Portugal forward. Messi joined PSG in 2021 on an initial two-year deal with an option for an additional season if both parties wanted to extend their relationship. United are aware that he could look to move in January in a bid to find regular first-team football.

The ball fell to Tyrell Malacia who was then robbed by Omonia’s Brazilian forward Bruno. “He’s always cutting inside and either passing back to the full-back or having a shot. After half-time I think we dealt with the setback. You’re thinking he needs to develop a little bit. “Antony on the other side as well, he doesn’t run in behind. “Sancho never really runs in behind.

Manchester United get Europa League win over Omonia Nicosia (ESPN Australia)

It was a frustrating night for Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United needed help off the bench to beat Omonia Nicosia.

[Borussia Dortmund](/football/team?id=124) in 2021 -- that [Jadon Sancho](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/259836/Jadon-Sancho) was supposed to show why United were so keen to sign him. [Cristiano Ronaldo](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/22774/cristiano-ronaldo) didn't want to play in this season now offers him the best chance to get a game. He fired one speculative free-kick high into the stands and then fluffed his best chance of the night when [Diogo Dalot](https://www.espn.com.au/football/player/_/id/238902/Diogo-Dalot) squared his pass across the box but Ronaldo saw his effort come back off the post. He's not doing enough to affect games regularly and has a habit of disappearing or taking the easy decision when he gets the ball. It was his poor pass which played Malacia into trouble for Omonia's opener and was quickly replaced at half-time with Rashford, who needed only eight minutes to score the equaliser. It's going to be a different game at Old Trafford, but we have seen them up close and know what their weaknesses are. United should have been out of sight well before Omonia scored their first and it was fortunate that Rashford and Martial were on hand to mount a rescue act in the second half. Despite dominating the first half in terms of possession and chances, United went in at half-time 1-0 down thanks to a shambolic But while there have been flashes of his ability with goals against [Liverpool](/football/team?id=364), Leicester and Sheriff, he's struggling to turn it on week after week. Rashford scored again to make it 3-1 before Nikolaos Panagiotou made it 3-2 late on to set up a nervous finish. [Highlights and notable moments](#highlights) [Best/worst performers](#bestworst)

Erik ten Hag: Man United must learn to play 'nasty' (ESPN Australia)

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has told his squad they must learn how to "play nasty" if they are going to be successful this season.

[Raphael Varane](https://www.espn.com.au/football/player/_/id/153053/Raphaël-Varane) available for the trip to Everton after the French international missed the win over Omonia. "That is what we have to work for now. "It's quite clear City is the standard in that. "It's not something that you build or progress in a week or a month," Ten Hag added. That is the demand from us, from the coaches to the players. They have recorded impressive wins over

Ten Hag admits Man Utd are 'not that good' as he bemoans lack of ... (Goal.com)

Erik Ten Hag gave a brutal assessment of his Manchester United side after a difficult two games following the international break.

However, recent performances suggest there is still work to do for Ten Hag to ensure his side perform consistently at a high level. We have to bring the intensity in every game on the pitch. Both performances left much to be desired, and Ten Hag was brutally honest about his team in his press conference today.

Man United 'confident' Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at club beyond ... (Old Trafford Faithful)

Man United are confident in their belief that Cristiano Ronaldo will be at the club beyond the January transfer window, assuming the player wants it.

He needs a side with legs around him, in a team that doesn’t press from the front. He looks every bit an older player trying to compete in this physically-demanding league. We have to be honest, Ronaldo looks like a shadow of his former self right now.

Erik ten Hag asks his Manchester United side to 'play nasty' and be ... (The Guardian)

Erik ten Hag has said he wants Manchester United to be nastier and smarter as he attempts to make them challengers again.

“It’s not something that you build or can progress in a week or a month – it’s a system that has to be and a demand in top football. I have to keep reminding them to play smart but they have to play nasty as well.” We have seen it against Liverpool and Arsenal [when winning] but now we have to do it on a consistent basis; that is what we have to work for now. “We want to play tough, we want to keep the game going and then in the second minute it’s already a booking for Diogo. He referenced Diogo Dalot’s booking for a challenge on Jack Grealish in the opening moments of Sunday’s [6-3 loss at Manchester City](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/oct/02/manchester-city-manchester-united-premier-league-match-report). Like the first booking on Sunday, I really don’t understand.
