Speaking ahead of the draw about the success of the competition last season, UEFA's Head of Women's Football, Nadine Kessler said "we changed perceptions because people said 'there are no fans in women's football'. UEFA will be hoping to capitalize on this opportunity to build on the success of last season's group stage. The Israelis will be up against it, but given the weaknesses shown by the Bianconeri this season, a result (or two) may not be out of the question for Barak Bakhar’s men. [Champions League holders Real Madrid](https://playingfor90.com/2022/05/28/real-madrid-claim-14th-european-title/) have two wins in the bank in Group F. Should FC København earn anything over their two upcoming games with Manchester City, they will have caused quite the shock. The Rossoneri is in a promising position, while the contrast could not be greater for the Blues. So when the two do battle against each other, the Germans should have more confidence. Borussia Dortmund is on 3 points from two games, while Sevilla and FC København have a point each. The 'show us your medals' brigade would have a hard time criticising these superstars, although none have claimed Europe's biggest prize.
PSV, Inter, Barcelona, Madrid and Milan are among the forward's former teams, but the man who was named the best player in the world in 1997 and 2002 was never able to scoop European club football's top prize. He even moved to PSG in a bid to win the trophy – but returned home a year later. He was also part of the Arsenal side that reached the last eight in 2003/04, when Chelsea ran out 3-2 winners on aggregate in a London derby. Yet the continent’s biggest prize proved elusive for a player who frequently sat out Champions League away games due to his fear of flying. Thuram was also a member of the Parma team that lifted the UEFA Cup in 1999, while he later joined Barcelona just after they won the Champions League in 2006. He scored twice in four games in 1993/94 but then failed to find the net the following campaign, before striking three times in 10 matches as United reached the semi-finals in 1996/97, his final season as a player. He's therefore another nearly man: he left Inter a year before they won it in 2010, before doing exactly the same thing at Barcelona the following summer. The goalkeeper was on the wrong end of three final defeats with the Turin-based giants, making two penalty shoot-out saves in 2003 and then watching Barcelona run out 3-1 winners in 2015 and Real Madrid triumph two years later. The Giallorossi also reached the last eight the following year, but Totti never made it beyond that stage in the Champions League. The Frenchman had only just turned 33 when United beat Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou – and it's curious to wonder whether the Red Devils would still have triumphed in Europe with Cantona in their squad. It used to be the World Cup that was the marker of how good a football really was. But the Argentine remained loyal to La Viola despite the fact they only participated in Europe’s foremost competition once during his time at the club.
The European Cup was officially renamed the UEFA Champions League from the start of the 1992/92 season.

Nunez collects it and tries to finish but McGregor punches it wide. Building up the momentum, Van Dijk to Henderson who passes it long to Salah. German giants demolish record in scary Champions League statement: CL Wrap.
For the opponent it’s difficult to turn the game around or create chances. It’s been a slow start to the season for me but I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. He then received a red card for an incomprehensible hand outside his area (23rd). People say things, but for me it’s about going out there and performing for the team. We were slow out of the blocks. Mignolet beat away Joao Felix and Angel Correa efforts in the final stages to secure a noteworthy victory for his team, and leave the 2014 and 2016 runners-up with a lot of work to do. They had to survive a series of scares in the second half, with Ousmane Dembele hitting the post and Pedri having a goal ruled out for handball in the 68th minute following a VAR check as a tired Inter sank back into their own area late on. The Reds are well on course to reach the last 16 of the Champions League for a sixth consecutive season with four points from their next two games away at Rangers and Ajax enough to seal qualification with a game to spare. Hakan Calhanoglu fired Inter Milan to a 1-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday which ended the Italians’ recent troubles and boosted their hopes of making the knockout stages of the Champions League. It’s the only thing that matters. On Saturday it was disappointing, our press wasn’t there. All that was missing for Klopp was a first Anfield goal for Darwin Nunez as the Uruguayan missed a series of glorious chances on his return to the starting line-up.
Leroy Sane scored twice in an emphatic 5-0 win against Viktoria Plzen as Bayern Munich made it a record 31 Champions League group games without defeat.
Gnabry, fielded through the centre of Bayern's attack, slotted home a second six minutes later with a clinical finish after being played in by Leon Goretzka at the end of a counter. It was left to Choupo-Moting to round off the scoring prior to the hour mark with a shot that went in off the post after another precise pass from Goretzka. Reigning Czech champion Viktoria is without a point at the midway stage in Group C and found itself three goals down after 21 minutes at the Allianz Arena.
Trent Alexander-Arnold's spectacular free-kick and a second-half penalty from Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a comfortable 2-0 win over Rangers.
McGregor produced an excellent save to tip away a Jota shot that was destined for the top corner and Joël Matip headed a good chance wide from a Tsimikas corner. Salah was close to doubling Liverpool’s lead after being released down the right by a lovely first-time flick from Núñez. Alexander-Arnold’s intentions were clear as he lined up the set piece but McGregor, arguably leaving too much room to his right, was powerless to prevent a brilliant free-kick curling just inside the top corner. The Liverpool right-back was denied a release from recent criticism when the Brighton goalkeeper, Robert Sánchez, saved his late free-kick from a similar position on Saturday. Moments later Núñez was fouled outside the area by the former Liverpool defender Ben Davies, who never played for the club prior to his £4m move north of the border this summer. Limiting the defeat to two was Rangers’ finest achievement on a night when they were indebted to the enduring excellence of goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

“It was decided relatively quickly and then the game sort of trundled along.” “The lads did it really well. We have to raise our level. Unfortunately, Napoli made that clear to us.” Raspadori equalised in the 18th minute with a diving header at the back post at the end of Mathias Olivera’s cross from the right. Napoli, who might have scored more such was their dominance, have a 100 per cent record at the halfway point in Group A, leaving Ajax with three points from their opening three games and in danger of missing out on next year’s knockout stages after their biggest defeat in European football.

The pressure didn't let up after the break and Raspadori grabbed his second goal in the 47th after Pasveer's sloppy pass to Calvin Bassey was intercepted. Raspadori cut through the static defence again in the 63rd minute with a quick exchange of passes to set up Kvaratskhelia for Napoli's fifth goal. After Mohammed Kudus deflected Kenneth Taylor's shot into the Napoli goal to give Ajax a ninth minute lead, it was Raspadori who equalised nine minutes later, stooping at the far post to head in a cross from the left by Mathias Olivera. Defender Giovani Di Lorenzo gave Napoli the lead when he beat Jurrien Timber to a cross from the right by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and headed into the corner in the 33rd minute. It was only the second time Ajax had conceded at least five goals in a European match. He engaged in a personal dual with Darwin Nunez in the first half – and after the break produced a spectacular fingertip save to push away a goal-bound effort from Diogo Jota. Giacomo Raspadori scored a goal in each half as Napoli's unrelenting high pressing forwards and midfielders never gave Ajax time to build up from the back and forced defenders to repeatedly turn over the ball, creating chance after chance.
