Carlos Sainz topped the times on Friday for Ferrari ahead of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Here's how and when to watch qualifying.
But after catching the eye outside of the F1 sphere, before his stunning impromptu grand prix debut in Italy, will it lead to a delayed full-time race seat? The new plan will allow the series to pump up the volume The Australian rising star is fast, consistent, confident, adaptable and has shown excellent racecraft, but there’s already a taint to his reputation.
F1 drivers got their sweat on in Singapore for the first time in three years when Friday practice got under way at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
In qualifying trim, the reigning world champions are just under a tenth behind Red Bull based on our data and 0.24s off the ultimate pace. Ferrari set the pace as rivals and championship leaders Red Bull struggled to light up the timesheets… But their pace on Friday was not quite as striking, with Norris admitting the team are a long way off rivals Alpine, while his team mate Daniel Ricciardo (who's set to get the upgrade in Japan next time out) said his day was “certainly a bit of a struggle” as a host of changes they made didn’t deliver the intended outcome. Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon both got the upgraded floor – the latest in a string of upgrades the team have consistently brought this season – and the early signs are that it has performed in line with expectations. They are quite some way off the frontrunners in qualifying and race trim, but they have a healthy advantage over nearest rivals Alfa Romeo, who have showed an upturn in form here, in the region of 0.2s. The duo looked quick in Singapore – and while Alonso didn’t complete his programme following a suspected gearbox oil leak, the Spaniard was pleased with the ultimate performance of the car. Qualifying is very important in Singapore as it’s tricky to overtake and that puts the Italian team – who are around a quarter of a second quicker than Red Bull in the low-speed corners – in a decent position for the weekend ahead. Alpine have long looked like the fourth-best team in terms of pure performance this season and their speed in Singapore did nothing to suggest they have lost that accolade. They are around a tenth of a second clear of Red Bull in terms of short run pace and are feeling comfortable about the data gathered when they filled the car up with fuel in preparation for Sunday’s race, even if the numbers suggest they are a fraction behind their championship rivals. That said, even with a lack of mileage – the championship leader completed just seven laps in FP2 – he still managed to pump in the fourth quickest time in the closing minutes. Sainz managed to find the limit quite quickly, which bodes well for the remainder of his weekend, but it wasn’t as smooth for Leclerc, the Monegasque spending a long time in the garage to miss out on valuable track time. Ferrari had hoped the nature of Singapore’s street circuit, with its array of low-speed corners, would suit the F1-75 – and the early signs are that it does, as Carlos Sainz headed Charles Leclerc in a one-two for the Scuderia.
In qualifying pace and on the long runs Carlos Sainz was quickest, teasing a much-needed Ferrari drought-breaker. Victory, however, won't be so easy as ...
Mercedes has shown enough on Friday to know it’s in the hunt, but it’s all about nailing qualifying. “Well, it’s definitely a difficult day,” he said. “Both cars used the new, upgraded floor, which worked in line with our expectations,” Alpine technical director Matt Harman said. “It’s looking tough,” Norris said. “The tyres are quite sensitive,” Russell said. So much lap time comes from confidence at a circuit like this, and every minute on track is valuable. But it’s a calculated risk based on Verstappen’s sparkling form. But the long-run averages aren’t crucial in the way they are at other circuits. Red Bull Racing is going into this race with a markedly different approach to previous races. FP2 is a particularly crucial hour of practice in Singapore. — we still need to analyse,” he said. Lewis Hamilton opted for the softs, while Charles Leclerc and both Red Bull Racing drivers suffered disrupted hours trying to tune their cars.

Carlos Sainz led a one-two from team-mate Charles Leclerc as Ferrari set the pace in Practice Two at the Singapore Grand Prix on Friday.
"We have had a few problems and very limited running so we need to catch up in P3. "I think it started off quite well and the car was working quite well in FP1, and then for FP2 we wanted to try a few things," Verstappen said. 4) Max Verstappen 2) Charles Leclerc 1) Carlos Sainz "I expect tomorrow to be a lot quicker and I think the Ferraris, the Red Bulls, the Mercs are all going to step it up and we are going to need to be the ones who step it up the most." "But it seems like the performance is good so that is a good thing and we need to do a step from today to tomorrow. "In terms of performance it has been a positive day, in terms of running it has been a very, very difficult day," Leclerc said. "We faced some challenges, P1 was a surprise with how bumpy the car was in general in terms of ride and how rough it felt out there but then for P2 we managed to improve a bit but we still have some things to look at because it looks like it is going to be a tight battle of six. The session represented an improvement for Ferrari after neither driver had been able to keep pace with Hamilton and Verstappen earlier in the day, but there was a sense the Mercedes and Red Bull had left some time on the table. "I think it has overall been a decent Friday because we managed to do all of the run plan and we had quite a lot of laps which on a city track is what you need to just get laps under your belt," Sainz said. There is an update to the Singapore Grand Prix weather forecast, with W Series forced to take cover at Marina Bay ahead of the Formula 1 action.
Similar unpredictable conditions were experienced in Malaysia when F1 visited Sepang between 1999 and 2017. With confusion reigning for several hours over Max Verstappen's starting position for the Italian Grand Prix, does F1's grid penalty system need revising, and should there be a rule preventing races from ending under the Safety Car? RacingNews365's weather partner WeerOnline forecasts rain throughout the third practice session, and there is the possibility it could decrease before qualifying.
How the McLaren Formula 1 team navigate the Singapore Grand Prix's unique schedule.
As well as the team members from McLaren who are coming in, it is also important for us to do this for all of the hotel guests attending the Formula 1." That would have a negative impact, and we would start to feel sleepier. That is why it is so important for the chef and me to plan the menu properly – especially breakfast." "To explain, you have your sleep cycle, your 24-hour internal body clock, and your relationship between how you sleep and how you eat can really influence that. The more seasoned travellers will have been made aware of the potential pitfalls and solutions in the past, but after three years without a Singapore Grand Prix, there are several newer members of the team who haven't been to the race. "You can use what we term as feedings as opportunities to migrate your sleep pattern across. "A natural signal will be sent through our body as a cue to get up and get ready for the day, as opposed to having a bowl of pasta, which we would associate with the evening. Consider some of the implications: your body is naturally attempting to adjust to its new surroundings – such as the sunlight and the time - and yet, you're telling it you need to sleep in the middle of the day with the sun blaring through the curtains? "In some ways, it's harder than the races where we have to fully transition to different time zones. Studies show that rooms want to be around 18 to 21 degrees, any hotter or colder, and you're either sweating or shivering and struggling to sleep, so that is something we can manage. You can be super high one minute, then super low the next, or you can feel negative about things in general. The hotel started working on the plans as early as June, with preparations ramped up recently.
