Entergalactic movie review & film summary (2022) | Roger Ebert (Roger Ebert)

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi's new Netflix collaboration, “Entergalactic,” is hard to categorize. It's billed as a “television event” and an “animated story.

[Vanessa Hudgens](/cast-and-crew/vanessa-hudgens), having fun with her over-the-top character) that all white guys look the same to her, including her manager Reed ( [Christopher Abbott](/cast-and-crew/christopher-abbott))—and they’re all ruled out of her dating pool. As an art piece, “Entergalactic” is evocative, beautiful, and smart. It helps that Jabari and Meadow have their own unique take on the city, traveling from what buddy Jimmy calls a “one-percent” apartment to back alleys to elite parties to bicycle lanes. We are seeing the world through his eyes, with dashes of the perspectives of the other artists in “Entergalactic.” The piece is full of them: Meadow is a photographer and one of the major plot points revolves around a group show she’s doing. And yet “Entergalactic” lacks many of the things that make up a film. [Kid Cudi](/cast-and-crew/kid-cudi)” Mescudi’s new Netflix collaboration, “Entergalactic,” is hard to categorize.

Kid Cudi's 'Entergalactic' Blends Edgy Adult Animation With ... (Variety)

'Entergalatic,' from Kid Cudi and Kenya Barris, is a conventional romantic comedy that offers flashes of the series that might have been.

The first half of the “event” has the rhythms of a pilot, introducing a raft of characters to populate Jabari and Meadow’s social circles. Perhaps the herky-jerky pacing is a result of the project shrinking from an open-ended series to a one-off special. While “Entergalactic” heavily features the music from its namesake album, the music is used to soundtrack a surprisingly conventional romantic comedy. “Entergalactic” was initially announced in 2019 as a series to be created by Mescudi and [Kenya Barris](https://variety.com/t/kenya-barris/), but has since been whittled down to a 90-minute special (which Netflix is calling an “event”). Jabari is introduced as he’s moving into a cavernous Manhattan loft, a space so cushy relative to his career that it would be distracting if “Entergalactic” were live-action. 'Entergalactic' Is a Creative Breakthrough for Kid Cudi (The Ringer)

The Netflix rom-com is a charming joyride, and a sharp attitude adjustment for such a traditionally dreary artist.

But Cudi has always openly preferred inner peace to punk rock; he’s always [struggling](https://www.billboard.com/music/features/kid-cudi-reveals-struggle-with-drugs-and-depression-working-with-kanye-west-new-music-7341594/) to break free of the druggy, angsty reputation of Mr. Talking to Complex three years ago about the project, Cudi [explained](https://www.complex.com/music/2019/09/kid-cudi-talks-new-album-entergalactic) his creative outlook on romance. Entergalactic is a rom-com, starring Cudi as the voice actor in the role of Jabari, a young and restless comic book artist with a new job at a major publisher, Cosmic Comics, and a new lease on a beautiful loft in Manhattan. He’s enamored of every woman he encounters, but he’s also loyal to a fault; the love triangle involving Jabari, Meadow, and Carmen is portrayed as just a big misunderstanding. [relating to young adults about depression](https://www.theringer.com/2020/12/10/22166862/kid-cudi-man-on-the-moon-series-retrospective) and anxiety. He briefly—and regretfully—rekindles a romance with his ex-girlfriend, Carmen (Laura Harrier), before developing a crush on his new next-door neighbor, Meadow (Jessica Williams), which launches the whirlwind romance at the heart of Entergalactic. Over the years he’s been cast in minor roles in a variety of movies (Bill & Ted Face the Music, Don’t Look Up) and series (How to Make It in America, We Are Who We Are). Long story short, Cudi [fumed,](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/kid-cudi-walks-offstage-pelted-water-bottles-rolling-loud-festival-rcna39786) and Kanye [laughed.](https://variety.com/2022/music/news/kanye-west-mocks-kid-cudi-water-bottles-1235335764/) This was the lowest blow in their long and dysfunctional partnership, which dates back to 2008 when Cudi signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D. He smokes weed and lounges in Washington Square Park with his friends Jimmy (Timothée Chalamet) and Ky (Ty Dolla $ign). He wasn’t the best rapper or even the best singer; rather he was the heroic underachiever with a notebook full of blunt poetry, the petulance in his songwriting smoothed out by his hypnotic, incomparable hum. He’s feuded on and off with Kanye for several years now and he’s only recently warmed to Drake. The crowd anticipating Kanye turned on Cudi for a number of reasons, some understandable, some ridiculous, including some defensiveness about Cudi’s

“It was something that I recorded years ago — sort of as a simple love song — but it was nice to expand upon its ideas and take it to other places, adding in characters and other storylines to see where it could go.” The accompanying album follows Jabari’s journey throughout the film of self-discovery and acceptance of love in his life. Cudi’s latest creative endeavor comes over a decade after the idea was first birthed on his 2009 debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day.

'Entergalactic' Review: Kid Cudi Melds His Music With a Vibrant ... (Collider.com)

A rare gem of an animated work for adults, Kid Cudi's Entergalactic guides us on a sublime journey that explores the bond between two people.

At the end of the day, in the massive cosmos of existence that we don't fully understand, we all just want someone to get a vegan burger with. It is all about getting a brief glimpse of two different yet connected people making their way in a world where connection can be hard to come by. [this is a growing trend in animation](https://collider.com/why-celebrity-voice-actors-are-bad/), and Entergalactic is by no means the worst offender of this, so it is hard to hold it against the overall animated work too much. He is a man with his head in the clouds that he also partakes in smoking. There are still a few things to quibble about in the final work. Split into chapters and also serving as an accompaniment for Cudi's newest album of the same name, which is also exceptional in its own right, Entergalactic centers on two neighbors who begin to grow closer after a chance encounter.

The musician took heed and has brought his songs into colorful light in the Netflix adult-animated romantic comedy “Entergalactic” — inspired by his eighth studio album of the same name.

“It’s a really hard time to be young and in a relationship, to just be in this world in general. I like to feel like it’s my personality and it’s not my e-profile, I want to see that you responded to my personality. It’s something that I’m just really proud of and that it was an honor to be a part of,” Williams says. With the help of casting director Carmen Cuba and his connections and relationships within Hollywood, they also put together a stellar cast that adds a magic touch to this project. Movie fans have also been clamoring for the return of rom-coms that have been on a decline for about a decade. Throughout the years of knowing him and seeing him in the studio and in front of his laptop just designing shit for hours and not moving, to him doing this shit for This creative endeavor was all born from Mescudi but he partnered with people in his circle and others he had collaborated with in the past to bring it to life. Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi & Jessica Williams Talk 'Entergalactic' and ... (Collider.com)

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi & Jessica Williams tell us about making Entergalactic for Netflix and how the animated project combines music, fashion & art.

I like that man a lot. But there was something about seeing it finished when we watched the screening a couple months ago and just seeing it completed and then at the end just crying. So I really like that. This is something where we have this interesting dynamic where I was just following your vision and I didn't know in the end how anything was going to look because it wasn't animated. And this is just cool the way it mixes music and fashion and art, and it's just this really cool melting pot. MESCUDI: For me, because I over time was seeing bits and pieces and stuff like that. So it was just dropping in and out of this long-term project. And then I finally saw it a couple months ago. And yeah, it was a really ambitious thing and I didn't even know if it could happen when I first came up with the idea. No, I mean honestly, first of all, this is maybe the coolest thing I've ever done. Because I was at this place as an artist where I was getting bored with the same old thing, recording an album, dropping two music videos, and then that'd be it. So I like throwing a curve ball at the beginning when I do interviews.

Entergalactic Creative Team Shares How They Expanded On Kid ... (Screen Rant)

Fletcher Moules, Maurice Williams & Ian Edelman share how they crafted Kid Cudi's Entergalactic album into an animated Netflix spectacle.

I think that the only thing that really changed is the formatting of it and how we tell the story. "What's a poster that is in relation to how the character feels right now?" Maurice Williams: The good thing about it was that there wasn't a lot to change, because we were able to keep the story very simple and very tight. And then it really was just sliding things ever so slightly to the left or ever so slightly to the right. Whether it's posters or bus stops, that is a reaction to the characters' emotional place that they're in. The song "In Love" is playing, and then just through the storyboarding process, we ask, "What's the best way of using animation to express that?" Who came up with that, and the twist at the end that I won't reveal? Scott had an idea that he wanted to do something about his time in New York, then flipped it back to me and Ian, and it's like, "The song that he played us is this thing..." I know that people probably often say that as the answer to the question, but it really was. And then from there, it was really just scouring the internet to find the best artists around the world that could help visualize this. Having that narrative while I listened to these songs was the piece of the puzzle that I needed to start visualizing. I think that, luckily, I heard the songs for the first time having also heard the outline from these guys and the fact that it was an artist living in modern-day New York City.
