At Paris Fashion Week, the Coperni spring 2023 show closes with a live performance feauturing Bella Hadid.

“It’s our celebration of women’s silhouettes from centuries past,” Vaillant says in a preview over Zoom ahead of the show. “And we wanted to update our aesthetic in a more grown-up and scientific way, too,” adds Meyer. The designers were serious about playing with historical proportions, from exaggerated hips by way of padding on tailored wool trousers, to the excessive draping of fabric on miniskirts, as well as leather jackets that can be cleverly tied around the waist to resemble the 19th-century bustle.

The designers and model paid homage to Alexander McQueen's spray painted dress.

Though Meyer admitted the dress won’t be profitable, he feels it’s his and Vaillant’s “duty as designers to try new things and show a possible future.” He told Vogue, “It’s a beautiful moment—an experience that creates emotion.” Hadid’s contribution will also likely aid in her path to supermodel-dom, though that status already seemed very much a given. At the Coperni spring/summer 2022 show on Friday, designers Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant paid homage to McQueen by updating the moment for the 21st century and making it their own. She peeled the newly created straps off Hadid’s body and placed them to fall off her shoulders before pulling out scissors and cutting a slit up the side. The men immediately started spraying Hadid, who wore just a nude thong to start, working around her as she stayed put, posing as a dress formed on her body. When the men were done spraying,

You almost wish there was more there for Lena to do and say; more surrealist dialogue, or a narrative twist that could heighten the strangeness of her presence, playing off the fact that Hadid, of all people, is tackling this role. When offering up why she loves the NBC sitcom so much, she simply says: “The Office is really relatable. Casting Hadid, who is half-Palestinian and is an extremely vocal advocate for Palestinian causes, for season three was yet another widening of the lens. Lena is passive and ASMR-level quiet in her line delivery, introspective about the only topic that has taken up all available real estate in her mind. The more she talks, the worse it gets. During Paris Fashion Week, Coperni reminded everyone of '90s Alexander McQueen with a dress spray painted on Bella Hadid's naked body for the finale.

Ramy Youssef on Working With Bella Hadid, Exploring Polygamy in ... (Variety)

'Ramy' creator and star Ramy Youssef unpacks the third season of his Hulu show, which features Bella Hadid's acting debut and a polygamy plot line.

There are people who are very uncomfortable with sex, and they watch the show and go, “Man, all these people are doing is having sex!” But then there are people who, religion is really not for them, and they watch like, “Man, all these people are doing is praying!” So I do think, for spiritual people, that is a real spiritual break. I couldn’t tell for sure: Does Ramy take his socks off before making wudu and cleansing himself in the ocean to pray? In the room, we started talking about open relationships, and then we started talking about polygyny, and reconciling these things in a modern framework. There’s so many conventions in this show that feel like a traditional sitcom — the two wives episode feels like a sitcom premise, but you’d never see that on “Seinfeld” … This show has all kinds of little miracles and questions of what was meant to be and what wasn’t, because we’re dealing with spirituality. I called her, like, “Look, I really want you to do this character, and I’m putting you in a tough situation because if you don’t do it, I actually don’t know who could do it.” Her character is kind of emblematic of something we always do as a show, which is to take something that might be classic or even trope-y, but go into it in a way that feels unexplored. A bunch of people found that they were just mostly watching “The Office” when they were dating somebody — this joke of “The Office” being enough to keep two people together. The way the episodes are designed, we see Ramy alone a lot, and we see his family and even his friends together without him. He’s more concerned about the dog than he even is about his mom because of this subconscious guilt — more than guilt. Season 3 opens with Ramy making a difficult decision about whether or not he should travel to Israel for business, being a supporter of Palestine and the BDS movement. After Season 2 finale “You Are Naked in Front of Your Sheikh” saw Ramy confess to Zainab (MaameYaa Boafo) on their wedding night that he’d cheated on her with his own cousin (Rosaline Elbay) the night before, Season 3 begins with a full embrace of the dirtbag Ramy has become. In lieu of God, Ramy searches for meaning in his nights with a sex worker named Olivia (Sarita Choudhury), and the two accidentally kill Boomer.

“It’s better than using fast fashion and also it gives a little bit of interest and variety to what [the audience] sees,” says Smith. “That was one of the ways that we focused on keeping it sustainable, and still making sure that we were accurate with the storytelling,” she says. “A lot of corduroy, a lot of wool skirts, some sad flats, and pantyhose,” says Smith, pointing out the word “sad” refers to the character aspect of flats and not Lena’s actual Clarks shoes and Wolford hosiery. “Because at the end of the day, we may have access to so much, but there's nothing more beautiful than people bringing themselves and their culture [through their own clothing and accessories].” “There were little things like that that I really tried to incorporate to make people feel seen and to feel understood.” “We also asked people to bring in things of their own personal heritage, as well,” says Smith. “We wanted to make sure that we made choices that were very clear about that,” says Smith, who elevated his layering, like a green puffer vest from Zara over a bold marigold Uniqlo fleece for an important decision (and comedic tension-filled run-in with Ramy). “When I think of The Office, I think of normcore and a really simple, clean silhouette, like “At the end of the day, as costume designers, we're collaborators to work with people who know jewelry firsthand and who are literally making beautiful, real authentic diamond pieces,” Smith continues. Now a successful young entrepreneur in the Diamond District, Ramy’s own jewelry evolution also tells a story — from the silver pendant he carries over from earlier seasons (and that Youssef wears in his personal life) to the ice-encrusted chain link collar he casually wears with sweaters and T-shirts in later episodes. In debt and in breach of a marriage contract for a cool $100K, Ramy needs to increase his earning potential, stat. Facing the aftermath of his decision-making last time around, the confused millennial and first-generation Egyptian American — played by creator, writer, and director Ramy Youssef — is still on his well-intentioned but destructively wayward path to being a good Muslim (and person).

How Bella Hadid's Spray on Dress Was Made (The Cut)

At the Coperni show at Paris Fashion Week, Bella Hadid had a dress spray painted on her using a new fabric technology. We were just as confused.

“Fashion designers need new materials and fabrics to create products to address evolving lifestyles and consumer demands,” wrote the show notes. The story behind the spray on dress started with a can of silly string and a man named Dr. It took about 15 minutes, but as the men finished spraying on a dress, a woman came and cut a slit and pulled down Hadid’s sleeves to make an off-the-shoulder look. Their plan is to take this technology to the medical industry, being able to make casts or spray-on sterile bandages from aerosol cans. But that texture can change depending on what fibers are used (can be natural or synthetic fibers) and how it is applied. After two years, and lots of trial and error, he started to get results.
