Four in a row: Tigers pip Suns in Punt Road nail-biter (AFLW)

Richmond continued its recent hot form with a thrilling win over Gold Coast on Saturday.

The former Magpie unloaded from outside 50 to kick the Tigers' second goal of the game, with the ball, according to the goal umpire, beating a sea of players without being touched. Richmond needed a goal deep in the third term, and Maddie Shevlin answered the call from down town. However, it looked like the ball may have struck the hand of a Suns defender and without the benefit of the goal review system in AFLW, the goal stood. However, the Suns forward had to be innovative to avoid a potentially heavy collision, using her incredible athleticism to cleanly hurdle over Dempsey - who luckily ducked her head! The win came at a cost for the Tigers, as Maddie Shevlin was stretchered from the ground in the last minute of the contest with a leg injury while Jess Hosking failed to finish the game. In a game of chances few and far between, the Suns looked to be on their way to a third consecutive win as they led for much of the second half, but a fast-thinking Yassir was in the right place at the right time.

Late goal gives Magpies tight AFLW win (The Singleton Argus)

Eliza James' last-gasp goal has secured Collingwood a two-point AFLW win over St Kilda at Moorabbin. The Saints...

One area where St Kilda impressed was their tackling, with 74 to 59, and they brought plenty of pressure to bear on the third-placed Pies. St Kilda's Hannah Stuart was best afield with 25 disposals and two goals, while key position player Kate Shierlaw kicked a goal in the last term and was mighty with her marking and pressure. It was reminiscent of Collingwood's improbable run of tight wins during the AFL season and AFLW coach Steve Symonds said that is no coincidence. "I will be highlighting the other 50 throughout the game where she was superb and gave us opportunities to go forward, tackled ferociously and kept the ball in our front half or through the middle of the ground." With three minutes left and the Saints four points ahead, they broke clear through the middle and a long pass found Stevens by herself in their forward 50m. Collingwood then held on in the frantic last minute on Saturday at Moorabbin and won 4.12 (36) to 5.4 (34), avoiding a massive upset.

She finished with 16 disposals (13 contested), in a sign of how much time the ball spent in Carlton’s back half. Alyce Parker is arguably the Giants’ most important midfielder, and when she fires, so does her team. But the Bulldogs will be left to rue other opportunities in the final term which could’ve scored them a come-from-behind win. Geelong struggled to exit their defensive zone as the Dogs effectively set up the wall on their 50m line. Trading Day begins 5pm EST on Fox Footy, Monday October 3 – daily news and analysis of the AFL trade period. But just prior to her missed set shot, with the game still in the balance and the Cats only up by seven points, Skinner chose the perfect time to produce a goal of the season contender. And in the third quarter, Chloe Scheer’s set shot from directly in front went out of bounds on the full, while Mia Skinner hit the post from a gettable set shot and Amy McDonald’s running attempt from 25m out failed to score. She would not be seen again. Stream it live or on-demand on Kayo. By that stage of the game, the Bulldogs only had two goals to their credit and had been largely outplayed in the middle two quarters. The 28-year-old in her debut AFLW season had already equalled her career-high in disposals and kicked two of the Saints’ three goals, including a goal of the week contender from the pocket. But somehow, in a miss that had to be seen to be believed, the 29-year-old sprayed her shot to miss the easiest of goals from the goal line to give Collingwood time to snatch it.

Collingwood snatch win over St Kilda late, Geelong pip Western ... (ABC News)

Collingwood and Geelong enjoy single-digit victories over St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs, while Richmond makes it four wins in a row and GWS rebounds ...

Emily Pease ensured the Giants were rewarded for their early efforts with the opening goal of the match and followed up with a second shortly after, with the 20-year-old a threat in the forward-half throughout. Laloifi (16 disposals) copped a heavy knock from Staunton in the first term but recovered to patrol the Carlton defence and be among their best. The Giants looked determined to make amends for their 95-point loss to Adelaide last week with a fast start against the Blues, before digging in late to hold on for a 4.5 (29) to 1.6 (12) victory. The win was the Giants' first in six attempts against Carlton and was built on intense pressure and tackling as well as clever ball movement that has been a feature of their better displays this season. Play was held up for several minutes before Richmond hung on for a 3.5 (23) to 3.1 (19) win, forcing a series of ball-ups in their back half during the final 42 seconds. I was pretty lucky," James said. It was the Cats' first AFLW win over the Bulldogs and took them above their opponents on the ladder with a far superior percentage. Richmond won a fourth straight match for the first time in the AFLW and surged into the top eight with a tense four-point victory over Gold Coast. Prespakis was hit with a two-match ban during the week for a dangerous tackle and watched from the sidelines in Ballarat on Saturday. St Kilda's Hannah Stuart was best afield with 25 disposals and two goals, while their key position player Kate Shierlaw kicked a goal in the last term and was mighty with her marking and pressure. AFLW: Pressing questions: Round six (West Coast Eagles)

Senior coach Michael Prior talks to the media after the Eagles' round six match against Hawthorn.

We’ll go back to Perth and look at that game heavily and that last quarter in particular and identify things that we should of done and could of done better. Whether we were up in the contest and needed to save the game or whether we were down and we needed to win. There was a number of things that we could of done better as a team but so should others.

When we look back on the generations coming, I'm super excited for them to look up to us and role model the pathway that will hopefully pave the way for a professional environment. Demons star Tayla Harris booted the opening goal of the match and then produced a mark-of-the-year contender when she jumped over two players to take a superb floating grab in defence. Brisbane Lions bounce back in AFLW with win over Essendon ... (ABC News)

Brisbane Lions are back on top of the AFLW ladder, after a seven-goal win over Essendon in Queensland in the first of three Sunday games.

Hore booted her first goal of the match in the opening 17 seconds of the third quarter to make it an 18-point margin. Demons star Tayla Harris booted the opening goal of the match and then produced a mark-of-the-year contender when she jumped over two players to take a superb floating grab in defence. The Dockers had two opportunities early in the final quarter to snatch the lead, but their misses proved costly as Melbourne kicked the last four goals of the match to secure the 10.6 (66) to 5.6 (36) win. But the Lions were not content to let the quarter run out, and in the final 30 seconds they went forward again, for Cathy Svarc to run in and drill the ball through on the siren to get the lead back to 36 points at the final change. It was a struggle for the Dons, and it took until the 14-minute mark of the third term for Joanne Doonan to kick a set shot from close range to get her team on the board. The extent of the home side's control of the game came in the stats, with the Lions having 27 inside 50s to just two for Essendon, plus 18 clearances to seven and 13 tackles inside 50 to none.

Lions defy inaccuracy to notch crushing win over Bombers (AFLW)

Brisbane jumped out of the blocks and never looked back, cruising to a 44-point win over Essendon.

Hickie kicked the game's first goal – a 35m arrow on the run – and gave the Lions complete domination around stoppages with her ruck craft. Tahlia Hickie put herself on the AFLW radar last season when she had more hitouts to advantage than any ruck in the League, and her performance against the Bombers again showed a huge step in her development. Essendon hosts Geelong next Sunday at Reid Oval Warrnambool from 1.10pm (AEDT). They hit the post not once, not twice, not three times, not four times, but incredibly, five times in what became comical by the end of the game. Wardlaw hit the post twice, but it was luckless half-forward Greta Bodey who will be cursing the woodwork the most, thumping the ball into it an incredible three times. Brisbane paved the way for its win in the opening term, racing to a 19-point advantage as the midfield held sway around the contest and the defenders were proactive in keeping the ball in their forward half.
