Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld reveals what he hopes to see in Deadpool 3 with the team up between Ryan Reynolds' hero and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

[Comicbook](https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-creator-rob-liefeld-teases-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-road-trip-adventure/), Deadpool creator Liefeld reveals what he hopes to see from the team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine in Deadpool 3. With Wolverine now confirmed to appear in the movie, it's possible that a road trip element will remain, but Liefeld's comment about the buddy cop dynamic between the two characters certainly seems like a real possibility. Liefeld thinks fans might be in for a dynamic similar to the one between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. With confirmation that the [R-rated Deadpool 3 is still moving forward](https://screenrant.com/deadpool-3-writers-update-rated-r-disney-movie/) under Disney with Shawn Levy attached to direct, fans are now looking forward to the beloved mercenary's introduction into the MCU. But you'll just be left hanging like a yo-yo until the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie finally arrives in September 2024.

[2017 movie Logan](/culture/entertainment/deadpool-logan-fill-out-disney-plus-x-men-movie-lineup/), which seemed to kill off the character. It'll continue the storyline of the '90s animated series when it hits the streaming service in fall 2023, with voice actor Cal Dodd [returning as Wolverine](/culture/entertainment/x-men-animated-series-wolverine-returns-for-disney-plus-revival/). [further teased](https://twitter.com/VancityReynolds/status/1575101936700772355) Wednesday. ("Mouth sewn shut" references a scene at the end of the 2009 film [X-Men Origins: Wolverine](https://www.metacritic.com/movie/x-men-origins-wolverine), where Reynolds shows up as Deadpool with a sewn-shut mouth.) And another familiar face is coming along for the ride -- Hugh Jackman will play [Wolverine in Deadpool 3](https://twitter.com/VancityReynolds/status/1574865217141481477).
Deadpool 3's reveal that Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine has some hopeful that his interactions with Deadpool will resemble the 2013 game.
Overall, the two actors seem quite excited about being together in a Deadpool 3 film, and their portrayal of Deadpool and Wolverine's dynamic has a lot of potential. Hugh Jackman has spent over a decade perfecting his portrayal of the iconic X-Men character, while Ryan Reynolds is seen as the real-life Deadpool for many fans. [Deadpool is long overdue for a newer game](https://gamerant.com/deadpool-new-video-game-needed-ryan-reynolds-movie-tie-in/) following his mainstream rise to popularity, though the video game from 2013 stands the test of time in effectively exploring both Wade Wilson's personality and his dynamic with Wolverine. Still, the upcoming film could learn a thing or two from how High Moon Studios chose to represent the two's tumultuous relationship, with Wolverine exasperatedly trying to get Deadpool to pay attention to the mission as the latter rattles off jokes. Perhaps the best one is simply, "that's because the player keeps mashing the button," which breaks the fourth wall in Deadpool's classic style. Additionally, fans of the 2013 Deadpool game are crossing their fingers that the two X-Men's interactions will be similar to the iconic High Moon Studios game.
After years of campaigning, Ryan Reynolds has finally won. He and Hugh Jackman will be reuniting in a film to play Deadpool and Wolverine together.
Whatever version of Wolverine we meet in Deadpool 3 (and beyond?) will add to the character’s story and make his final journey in Logan that much more memorable. Marvel (Iman Vellani) is a mutant on MCU’s regular Earth-616, and her relationship with Wolverine in the comics is a fan favorite. Or, it could be that we’ll see a continuation of the same character—perhaps Logan will be plucked out of his timeline before his demise a la Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in Avengers: Endgame. After Reynolds and Jackman’s second promo video, we can safely assume that the chapter on Fox’s Wolverine has been closed and an alternate version of Wolverine will appear in the third Deadpool film. [which Reynolds and Jackman reminded viewers about in their second promotional video](https://collider.com/deadpool-3-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-video-wolverine-timeline/), but the MCU is still somewhere between 2023-2026. Ryan Reynolds confirmed that not only is Deadpool 3 a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Hugh Jackman will also reprise his role as Wolverine in the film. The notable exceptions to that rule were the Deadpool and Wolverine movies. When Disney acquired Fox, fans began to dream up elaborate fan casts for pretty much every mutant under the X-Men umbrella- as well as all of their various satellite teams.

Deadpool III will be the first official film that will directly be a continuation of the X-Men series. Marvel Studios is also developing a new Mutants movie which may take place in the franchise’s Phase Six, but the chances of it kicking off Phase Seven are much higher. Besides, Patrick Stewart has appeared as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a variant of his character from the X-Men Series. Liefeld also noted that though he had the report, he wasn’t sure when the studio would make the official announcement. Though Liefeld never told the name of his friend, he said that his information has always been accurate. According to sources, Tom Holland's Spider-Man is rumored to make an appearance in Ryan Reynolds' upcoming film, Deadpool 3.
Ryan Reynolds, in a typical Ryan Reynolds manner, took to social media to discuss the proposals for the next Deadpool 3. Ryan Reynolds, in typical Deadpool style, skipped Marvel’s massive San Diego Comic-Con and D23 events in favor of updating fans on the status of Deadpool 3 via a little video on Twitter. What wonderful news for fans of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who returns to the big screen in Deadpool 3!
A Deadpool fan shared a video where he provides a voiceover after lipreading Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's funny reveal video.
[ackman’s involvement in Deadpool 3](https://gamerant.com/deadpool-3-wolverine-hugh-jackman-ryan-reynolds/) broke, it's been all that MCU fans seem to talk about on social media. [The reveal video](https://gamerant.com/ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-deadpool-3-questions-answers-video/) has Reynolds acknowledging that Wolverine dies in Logan, but he reminds fans that the timeline in the film was set in 2029. At one point, Jackman is possibly saying “we’re in our prime,” but what’s better is Reynolds telling fans that this is a “way to make it up to you.” Could they potentially be referring to how fans have been demanding [Wolverine dies at the end of 2017’s Logan](https://gamerant.com/logan-wolverine-death-explained/). Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are still reveling after the big reveal of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine returning in Deadpool 3.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman hilariously teased "Deadpool 3" after revealing Wolverine will return in the film, which is out next year in September.
Though the long-awaited meeting of Logan and Wade Wilson is more than enough, there are others who might join the fray in Marvel's Deadpool 3.
[Loki](https://screenrant.com/tag/loki/) season one. Spider-Man is as fast with a punchline as he is a punch, and he and Wade often go rounds in all the ways one might imagine, sometimes on the same side and sometimes not. Having Peter Parker appear in a multiverse construct to bring Deadpool into the MCU is a no-brainer. Audiences haven't seen much of Shang Chi et al within the multiverse adjuncts, and there seem to be no immediate appearances planned, presumably until [Black Widow](http://screenrant.com/black-widow/) sibling, she takes herself far less seriously and knows how to both make and take a joke. Proving herself more than capable of keeping up with the quick deadpan delivery of Ryan Reynolds, Beetz provided a delightful performance as the only surviving member of X-Force. Still, the prospect of the Hulk dishing out everything he's got to the two characters in the Marvel catalog who can take it thanks to their regenerative powers is mighty tantalizing indeed. Ideally, the Multiverse Saga should carry on that tradition to ensure Anthony Mackie's version of Captain America is held in no less regard than the version played by Chris Evans, and the first movie which introduces both Wade Wilson and Logan to the MCU is a terrific place for Cap to make a quick visit. Watching Wade or Logan crack wise as easily as they crack heads is an essential component of their antihero characters, and who better to join the fray of witty rejoinders than Natasha's younger sister Yelena? The characters seemed so in tune with each other it's hard to imagine future Deadpool stories without Domino present in some form or another, much like his recurring associates Blind Al, Weasel, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. While that didn't happen in the events of [Doctor Strange 2](https://screenrant.com/tag/doctor-strange-2/) nor [Spider-Man No Way Home](https://screenrant.com/tag/spider-man-homecoming-3/), there's no reason why Loki [couldn't make a quick surprise cameo](https://screenrant.com/mcu-phase-four-most-surprising-cameos-clea-eros-pietro-hercules/) in Deadpool 3, which is almost guaranteed to be some sort of multiverse tie-in to move Wade over from the Fox-verse to the MCU. Tatiana Maslany's breakout surprise Disney Plus character has proved to be hugely popular so far, aside from some negligible CGI issues.
Jackman is set to return to the MCU alongside Ryan Reynolds in the third Deadpool movie after Wolverine was killed off in 2017.
This, of course, is why Deadpool and Wolverine are able to now appear in the MCU, and why we’ve already seen other mutants such as Professor X appearing in Marvel movies such as [Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/may/03/doctor-strange-in-the-multiverse-of-madness-review-benedict-cumberbatch-alt-reality). [turned out so appallingly](https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/ryan-reynolds-explains-agreed-play-deadpool-xmen-origins-wolverine/). Not a bad response, but in reality it seems unlikely that the (possibly much cheerier) take on Wolverine who emerges in the MCU is going to find himself descending into a post-apocalyptic world in which no mutants have been born in 25 years (Logan’s setup) just at the point Well, Reynolds and Jackman do point out in the video, before it descends into a mulch of bad 80s pop, that Logan takes place in 2029, which gives them the best part of a decade to fill in the gaps. Not only was that movie billed as the Australian actor’s final appearance as the adamantium-clawed mutant, but he [actually died at the end of it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMMjSemaWXo) having been brutally murdered by a younger clone of himself. [new video posted by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman earlier this week](https://twitter.com/VancityReynolds/status/1575101936700772355?cxt=HHwWhsCi4be38dsrAAAA) hoping to find out how Marvel is planning to bring Wolverine back from the dead, you’ll probably have been mildly disappointed – yet strangely uplifted.
With Hugh Jackman officially coming back as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, let's look back at four of Wade and Logan's best comic book moments.
It’s the reason they respect him as a hero and as a man. The idea was for them to kill threats to mutants before they could attack the remaining mutants. Thankfully, Logan and Cap helped Deadpool through this time the best they could. Some of them were experimented on and given powers like the X-Men. He still looked at Wade as a mercenary that would do anything for money. Before we get more news about Deadpool 3, and while the news is fresh, let’s take a look at four most important moments of Wade and Logan’s time in He said it was a new day for mutants and X-Force can’t be part of it. However, the next one on the list could be the most personal for Wade. Before the 20th Century Fox and Disney merger, fans of Wade Wilson have wanted Wolverine to appear in a Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movie. And it wasn’t just because he was Logan in the previous X-Men movies. The creative team for the Deadpool films has always been fantastic. The announcement came in the most fun way possible, but seriously—maybe it's time the actor hung up the claws.
[shot them down](https://ew.com/movies/daniel-radcliffe-denies-wolverine-casting-rumors/) as recently as March, but that doesn’t make him any less perfect. Fans rejoiced; Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, practically [sang him a ballad](https://twitter.com/VancityReynolds/status/1574865217141481477). (Though reboots aren’t always, you know, great.) He and Jackman also promised lots of cool action sequences—their descriptions of which were drowned out by the sounds of Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” (Zing!) It was fun; it was fan catnip! Following Logan—a movie in which the titular character died, mind you—it was presumed Jackman’s run with Wolvy was over. When it comes to matchups between characters and the actors who play them, his performance is almost universally beloved, even when some of the films aren’t.
Deadpool may be one of the best fighters in Marvel Comics, but one of his signature personality traits is keeping him from being number one.
While Deadpool has experienced tremendous personal growth since his early Marvel Comics appearances in the '90s as an X-Force villain, his need to tell jokes during combat has remained, and it is the one thing keeping him from being a perfect fighter. Deadpool wins against Bullseye, getting in a classic one-liner ("And yours is putting a target right in the center of your forehead." [Deadpool is there to murder](http://screenrant.com/deadpool-disturbing-murder-power-pack-ms-marvel-comics/) Wilson Fisk, one of the Cabal's leaders, but Bullseye and Batroc the Leaper are defending him. The 2017 limited series Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe Again, by Cullen Bunn and Dalibor Talajic, reveals a previously-unspoken, yet obvious weakness. Wade Wilson, the Merc with a Mouth, the Regenerating Degenerate, and frequent annoyance to Spider-Man and Wolverine, has beaten nearly all other A-list fighters at one time or another. Deadpool's incredible regenerative capabilities allow him to shrug off nearly all mortal wounds, leaving him with no obvious weaknesses to exploit.

Hugh Jackman shared a picture indicating that he's started training for his MCU debut as Wolverine.
While only time will tell what other details add to that story, Jackman and Reynolds will be busy in the gym making sure they get back into superhero shape for their MCU introductions. This means that filming is sure to begin at some point in 2023, which also gives fans a timeframe for when to expect more updates from the cast and crew on story and production details. That happens when Ryan Reynolds confirms that Hugh Jackman is set to bring his portrayal of Wolverine into the MCU for one last ride alongside the Merc with a Mouth.

All the crap that was left over went into what you see in the mirror every morning.' That's Wade Wilson. He says he "literally pitched him as (Wolverine's) junk." It's in the original pitch for the character, which took inspiration from an unexpected source: the 1988 comedy Twins, which technically counts as sci-fi since it asked us to believe that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito could come from the same genetic material. He "stole" it from Twins, of all places. With the news that Deadpool 3 will co-star Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, every pop culture site is currently poring over every old Wolverine/Deadpool comic to look for scenes that might end up in the movie. Then that backfired too, because X-Men comics are a powerful allegory meant to raise awareness of the fact that the government is dumb.

Insomniac's upcoming Wolverine video game pursues a mature, serious tone, like Wolverine's solo comics. A Deadpool appearance would ruin that vibe.
Breaking the fourth wall and poking fun at comic tropes is a bad paring for a game trying to evoke the mood of films like Logan, however. While a Spider-Man cameo is questionable, a Deadpool appearance is out of the question if the game aims for mature storytelling. [Marvel’s Wolverine and Spider-Man 2 need separation](https://screenrant.com/marvels-wolverine-spiderman-2-shared-universe-crossover-violence/) so that Insomniac’s Wolverine can focus properly on its own story instead of trying to build an interconnected video game version of the Marvel Universe. One classic solo Wolverine comic series saw the character take on the identity of Patch in the lawless island nation of Madripoor. [Marvel’s Wolverine](https://screenrant.com/tag/marvels-wolverine/) video game, but Deadpool should not be among them if the game wants to maintain a mature tone. The best and last Wolverine movie was Logan, a bleak final journey for the character that bore more similarities to a Cormack McCarthy novel than a traditional comic book story.
Deadpool 3 marks one last chance to make Wolverine actually dress like Wolverine. Disney, Marvel… it's time to bust out the yellow spandex!

It’s not like they need an excuse to redesign characters, but the current disarray of the Multiverse is allowing for quite a few makeovers: Loki and WandaVision gave us some classic outfits in the form of Halloween costumes and an alternate timeline variant. Meanwhile, Multiverse of Madness showed us the most comic accurate versions of Black Bolt and Professor X to date - as well as Reed Richards, though, in Fox’s defense, the matching jumpsuits were one of the few things the Fantastic Four movies did right. If there’s one thing that can hand-wave far-fetched plot points even more shamelessly than the idea of the multiverse, it’s Wade Wilson’s ability to break the fourth wall and crack jokes to the audience. [How Wolverine fits into Deadpool 3](/articles/burning-questions-wolverine-deadpool-3-mcu-marvel), and the MCU as a whole, isn’t something I’m worried about. The success of Blade paved the way for the X-Men to hit the big screen, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the wardrobe of Bryan Singer’s movie mutants might have been attempting to ride the leather coattails of the daywalker himself. X-Men: Days of Future Past DID give Wolverine a new costume, but rather than doing something with the comic-accurate one that had been put together for The Wolverine, they replaced black motorcycle leather with a tactical carbon fiber scuba suit that bafflingly featured blue and orange accents - and really, why even bother? Despite Deadpool constantly skewering (sometimes literally) Fox’s other X-properties, the Deadpool movies - specifically the second one - have been two of the most faithful adaptations of the mutant-centric corner of the Marvel Universe. Okay, they might have been less of a hassle than the rubbery superhero costumes in, say, Spawn or Batman and Robin, but the color of an outfit has no bearing whatsoever on how easy it is to put on. The original X-Men even has that joke where Wolverine gripes about going out in public in leather jumpsuits, to which Cyclops quips: “What would you prefer, yellow spandex?” And I mean. And that’s great news for a lot of reasons, but one in particular: it’s one last chance to make Wolverine actually dress like Wolverine.
