Aaron Judge of Yankees Reacts to Hitting 61st Home Run (The New York Times)

Aaron Judge went seven games without a home run and admitted the chase for No. 61 wore on him. With one swing, he matched Roger Maris's record.

“I think it means a lot for a lot of people that he’s clean,” said Maris, who was at Rogers Centre for the game. “I think it will happen in New York and it’s where you want it to happen. Now, it is time for a new story to be told, and Maris Jr. “To get a chance to sit at 60 for a while there with the Babe was nice,” Judge said. “But it’s good company to be in and it’s also an honor to have the entire baseball world watching what he’s doing. “But getting a chance to now sit at 61 with another Yankee right fielder that hit 61 home runs, was an M.V.P. But they did grow quiet as the pitchers went into their windups, and they “oooohed” every time he swung his mighty bat. He had hit his 60th home run more than a week ago to tie Babe Ruth’s best season, and he needed only one more to match the American League record, set by [Roger Maris](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/29/sports/baseball/aaron-judge-roger-maris-yankees.html) in 1961. With Aaron Hicks on first base and the score tied in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the left-hander Tim Mayza delivered a full-count sinker that did not sink at all. In the stadiums where he played, an unusual anticipatory hush fell over the stands whenever he strode to the plate. Aaron Judge went seven games without a home run and admitted the chase for No. He had not hit a home run in seven games — his second-longest stretch of the year — and with time running out on the regular season, the pressure had mounted.

"Everyone is just so excited for him, and -- because Aaron is the way he is -- everyone feels a part of it. Britton joked that the Yankees relievers were going to engage in negotiations with Judge on that piece of history. I go back to the context of the season, and the more I look at it and dive into it, it's got to be an all-time great season." "Just having the ball, that was cool. Judge was a big reason for the crown, and it's been more than just home runs. But trying to get to there, that's the hardest one, that 61 is going to be the hardest. "It's an incredible honor, getting a chance to be associated with one of the Yankee greats, one of baseball's greats, words can't describe it," Judge said. Bonds, for his part, said over the weekend that he could see Judge going on a home run streak after connecting on his 61st. "I got to believe it's right there with some of the best very short list of all-time seasons. I mean, that's really who he is if he hits 62, and I think that's what needs to happen. Judge said when he hit the ball, he wasn't sure if it would be a homer or an out. He and the Yankees then headed to Toronto looking to make history at Rogers Centre.

Aaron Judge is having the greatest season ever — Yes, I said it! (Deadspin)

Yankee leads in damn near every offensive stat in an era of pitching.

Judge, on the other hand, had to play in games that mattered all season long. As of today, Judge is the Triple Crown leader in the AL. If he was leading in the Triple Crown and a Cy Young candidate, there would be no debate. If Judge wins it, it will be the third since Carl Yastrzemski did it back in 1967. Plus, Judge can set a home run record in the same season. We haven’t seen anyone hit and pitch on a daily basis since Babe Ruth in the 20s. Judge will have led the league in virtually every offensive category. But Judge will have done more than leading the game in home runs. In the simplest of terms, it’s hard to hit in baseball. Even Judge calls it the record to beat. The MLB record book calls it the record. It was his 61st of the season, tying Roger Maris’ American League record for most homers in a single season.

Miggy looks back on Triple Crown, tips cap to Judge (MLB.com)

Miggy doesn't really like to talk too much about that stuff, so Prince and I did the talking for him, like this is so [freaking] cool. The Tigers had signed Prince Fielder that winter following Victor Martinez’s season-ending knee injury, and his presence behind Cabrera in the lineup gave opponents a threat for consequences if they were to put Cabrera on base. While he was climbing the batting leaderboards, the Tigers had ground to make up in the AL Central standings for most of the season. I didn’t expect it to be then, I expected it to be later. I didn't think about what the other guys were going to do, this or that. Said then-A’s manager Bob Melvin at the time: "When he's going good, it's very difficult to have to deal with him. “Back in the day, I was like focused about making it to the playoffs,” Cabrera said. No hitter in either league had won a Triple Crown since Carl Yastrzemski batted .326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs to lead the 1967 Red Sox to an American League pennant. Cabrera wasn’t leading in any of the categories heading into the All-Star break that year, and while he took over the lead in RBIs and batting average down the stretch, he had a fight on his hands to catch up in home runs. The highlights from that clinching night in Kansas City still seem fresh, with a younger Cabrera flaring balls out to right field with ease. “It's going to be great to watch,” Cabrera said a few days ago. Others believe that the record belongs to Bonds, who mashed 73 in 2001, beating McGwire's mark of 70 set in 1998. But don't expect the debate to die out any time soon.
