At least four of the six players on a team play doubles. The Laver Cup, with Team Europe against Team World, is a combination of singles and doubles matches over three days. He said he decided to delay his announcement because he wasn’t going to be in New York for the tournament, and he didn’t want fans to think he was “going to be a stranger to the game.” “Laver Cup is the only competition where we get a chance to be teammates and not rivals,” Djokovic said. In the day’s first match, for example, Casper Ruud returned to his seat during a changeover and promptly got some on-court coaching from Rafael Nadal, which gestured to spots on the court and he spoke into Ruud’s ear. The last three seasons have been full of pain, frustration and forced breaks from the game that tested even Federer’s love for the sport. Ljubicic has made the trip to London from his base in Monaco for the occasion. Sock has a big serve, an imposing forehand with an extreme grip and fabulous touch and reflexes at the net. When that time comes, Federer said the future of men’s tennis is bright thanks to the next generation of players. Inside a packed O2 Arena, the tension was broken only by shouts of “We love you Roger!” during nearly every pause in the action and by tribute videos during each changeover. Tiafoe rips a forehand off the arm of a defensive Federer at the net and quickly apologizes, but he’s lost the crowd now.

Roger Federer final match: Result, highlights and reaction as Swiss ... (Sporting News)

Roger Federer saw his final match on the ATP Tour end in defeat, as the Swiss great lost in the Laver Cup doubles alongside Rafael Nadal.

14:00 ET 08:00 ET Federer/Nadal 1-1 Sock/Tiafoe: Team Europe gets off to a decent start. He then exchanges some forehands with Sock, Nadal and Tiafoe get into a game of cat-and-mouse at the net, and Team Europe gets the game. Federer/Nadal* 4-3 Sock/Tiafoe: Tiafoe blasts a shot right at Nadal at the net, which didn't thrill the Spaniard. Federer can't get a Tiafoe smash back in play, and Tiafoe settles the game with a quite lovely sliced volley right along the length of the net. Federer/Nadal 6-4 Sock/Tiafoe*: TEAM EUROPE WIN THE FIRST SET! Federer/Nadal 6-4 5-5 Sock/Tiafoe*: Federer lets Team World off the hook with a forehand error, but Tiafoe double-faults for 30-15. Nadal keeps the first break point alive off the backhand, and the umpire penalises Tiafoe for hitting the ball twice at the net and awards the game to Team Europe! Federer and Sock exchange groundstrokes and, as Nadal moves to the net, Sock plays a simple forehand into the open space. He absolutely rips a forehand that Nadal has to dive to avoid, and Team World will serve for the match! It was no surprise, then, that he was gracious in defeat for one last time, congratulating Sock and Tiafoe at the net with Nadal before embracing members of both Team Europe and Team World.

Roger Federer bids farewell alongside Nadal in last match (Tennis Magazine)

Roger Federer is bidding farewell to his tennis career with one last contest before he heads into retirement at age 41.

Federer trotted from the net back to the baseline to consult with Nadal, then pointed to his ear to signal to the fans what the issue was. Similar reactions arrived merely at the chair umpire's announcement before the third game — "Roger Federer to serve" — and when he closed that game with a 117 mph service winner. Doubles requires far less movement and court coverage, of course, so the stress on his knee was limited Friday.

Roger Federer Has Just Played His Last Match as a Professional (Vogue.com)

Federer's historic, awe-inspiring career came to an end at the Laver Cup in London on Friday night.

[announced his intent to retire](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cih0_lCgJul/?hl=en)—after more than 1,500 matches over 24 years as a pro—a little more than a week ago and stated that this would be his last match, the tennis world has existed in a kind of fugue of mourning and appreciation. Which is understandable: Federer, now 41, was the first and, many would argue, the greatest of the so-called Big Three of tennis (along with Nadal and Novak Djokovic), widely considered the game’s best-ever players. (The annual Laver Cup tournament, co-founded in 2017 by Federer and his management company, TEAM8, pits the best European players against the best players from the rest of the world, with Team Europe coached by Björn Borg and Team World coached by John McEnroe.)
