Why Scotland winning their Nations League group is huge - 3 ... (The Scotsman)

Qualifying for Euro 2024 may still be six months away but in one way it is well under way due to the impact of the Nations League.

Winners of the Nations League groups in Leagues A, B and C automatically qualify for the play-offs. The twenty teams who finish first and second in the ten groups will join Germany in qualifying for the tournament. More importantly, however, it means if Scotland fail in qualification for Euro 2024 they will get a second shot via the play-offs.

Lyndon Dykes double eases Scotland to Nations League win over ... (The Guardian)

Two goals from Lyndon Dykes and John McGinn's opener earned a convincing 3-0 win for Scotland over Ukraine in the Nations League.

Tierney was next to test Trubin, with an effort which the goalkeeper scrambled to save. Patterson was removed from proceedings on a stretcher, with Aaron Hickey the replacement at right-back. This was the precursor to a decent Scotland spell, Ryan Christie’s pass narrowly evading Adams before Stuart Armstrong stung Trubin’s palms with a fierce shot. The atmosphere thereafter was subdued, which was strange for a match of this magnitude. The woodwork saved the visitors after Adams met a John McGinn cross with his head. One minute of applause for the late Queen Elizabeth II, a patron of the Scottish FA, was punctured by audible booing from a section of the home support.

Their only success in 193 internationals came in a friendly against Liechtenstein in 2004 and they have been unsuccessful in 124 games since. Scotland were guilty of squandering a spate of chances after the break, with Armstrong's miss from close range followed by Che Adams rattling the crossbar before McGinn and Dykes sealed the points with three well-taken goals. Dykes came off the bench and scored with two towering headers in the space of seven minutes after McGinn had given Scotland, frustrated by Ukraine for large periods of the game, the lead with a fine left-footed finish in the 70th minute.

They have the same aims on the pitch that the men’s team do – to win silverware – so it’s our job to help that in whatever way we can. We’re lucky to work at such an amazing club and we had a chance to give an insight as to what it’s actually like, and the stresses that the players go through. Wherever you go in the world, you can always talk to people about Arsenal Football Club, and it takes you so proud that it’s your club. The documentary shows the human side of it, and how relentless the season is as well. Each morning I’m at the training ground in reception, waiting for the boys to come in so I can speak to them about anything that might have cropped up. As a club we have a responsibility to protect the player from certain situations, but at the same time I believe we should be exposing them to difficult conversations sometimes. We saw it as an opportunity to show the work we do, and highlight some of the fantastic individuals at the club. We have to get our commercial obligations done, we have to get our media work done – it’s part of being a professional. I have to say that since I’ve been doing this job, this is the best group we’ve had for understanding exactly why we ask them to use their time in this way. Also I just try to explain why we’re doing what we’re doing as a club, and the reasoning behind their commercial appearances. I do that with all commercial requirements throughout the season so that each player knows what’s going on and is happy with it. These “club days” provide partners and media access to the men’s first team in a structured way.

It is not a perfect situation but there is still a lot of football to be played before Qatar.” Still in shock from failing to qualify for a second consecutive World Cup, European champion Italy is looking to regain some respect. “I still have a lot to give.” Italy is missing midfielder Marco Verratti and winger Federico Chiesa due to injury. “It is not ideal,” Southgate said of some of his key players not playing for their clubs, “but we feel they have been, and can be, important players for us. We were saying before that, before the Euros, we had a good few weeks of training sessions, good friendlies, and we’re not going to get that this time. “I hope that we can go on for the next 10 years and create a special, special bond in the middle of the pitch,” Rice said. There’s plenty for Southgate to ponder, then, heading into matches against Italy in Milan on Friday and Germany at London’s Wembley Stadium on Monday — in a Nations League group where England is in last place after two draws and two losses.

The teams are in and Belgium start with plenty of big names as Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois all get the nod from the off. That means Brennan Johnson starts in a front three alongside Dan James and Kieffer Moore, with MK Dons' Matthew Smith partnering Ethan Ampadu in midfield. There is plenty riding on Wales' trip to Belgium for the penultimate fixture of Group A4 of the 2022 UEFA Nations League.
