I was frozen on the spot, completely numb from what I had just heard [the player] say. I will never forget that phone call or the heartbreak I felt in that moment. Another player told the broadcaster he felt “under a microscope” and was told his partner was holding him back and he needed to end the relationship to go further in his career.

AFL rocked amid calls Clarkson, Fagan 'must go' if 'disturbing' Hawks claims found to be true.

This is going to be a big story for some time, and it goes to the hearts of some of the biggest names in football and they’re going to have to address this,” she told 3AW. “The last time they met was shortly after Eddie Betts’ book came out, and Gillon was urged to put First Nation’s People – at least one or two – on their Integrity Committee. “Again, we have a moment, I think, on the broader side of things, we say that football is viewed first as men. This sort of brings into question all aspects of footy, how it operates and the impact that it has on individuals. That’s on example of a player who might have some issues.” “The Do Better report at Collingwood was largely a historical document. While we celebrate the Indigenous influence in footy at convenient moments with colourful jumpers, what is the reality within the game for those who strive to make it in Australia‘s great game? We are currently seeing what’s happening in the Kumanjayi Walker case and some text messages that have been sent to and from different people who serve in the police. These are not ancient incidents, these are very much recent history while the game has been celebrating itself and its achievements on an Indigenous front.” They have much more information than we are privy to on the outside and a six-paragraph holding statement moving responsibility to the AFL’s investigation doesn’t feel like enough to me,” he said on SEN. “If we put this into a bigger context, we have had basically 10 days of wall-to-wall coverage of the Queen. “Earlier on this week, we had the banning of spit hoods – they were disproportionately used on First Nations people.

There is a long history of Aboriginal mothers being forced to give up their babies and terminate their pregnancies in this country. Our wider Australian society — and its institutions — has for centuries demonised loving, decent Indigenous people who are told by the state they are not fit to be parents. One commentator said the families' stories might expose a "dark underbelly" of AFL culture. It's more likely, though, that the stories reveal the sinister ways in which structural racism has always worked against Indigenous people across Australia. The shock and disbelief upon reading what these families allegedly endured have been universal. This could be the AFL's darkest hour.
