'Proved them wrong, haven't I?': Buddy's decade defies the knockers (AFL)

Lance Franklin says he never considered playing for another club during his recent contract negotiations.

I've been in the game a long time and understand that's what happens and it's part of the game and that's a great side to it. "As the year went on, I realised I've still got passion to play and compete. "There's so much speculation and things that are put out there that aren't in my control. I feel like I've still got a little bit more to give," he said. But as the year went on and I spoke to the people that I care about it became clear that I needed to go on. A lot of people knocking that I wouldn't get there, I wouldn't make it.

'Never say never': Buddy considered retirement before re-signing ... (The Age)

Swans superstar Lance Franklin considered retiring after this Saturday's grand final against Geelong before agreeing to play on for another year.

Like it’s not a given that you’re going to just rock up and get into a grand final. “Geelong have won 16 games in a row [compared to the Swans’ nine]. And we’re fortunate enough to be going around at this weekend.” A four-time Coleman Medal winner for the most goals in a season, Franklin has played 340 AFL games, 182 for Hawthorn and 158 for the Swans. There was considerable criticism about the length of the deal from some commentators, which reached a crescendo a few years ago when Franklin began struggling with injury and the Swans missed the finals in 2019 and 2020. There’s a there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it. So we’re just gonna have to go down there and give it our all. “But I’ve still got a passion, I love the game, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I wasn’t sure whether I was going to go on. “In our family, we came to the decision that we wanted to stay in Sydney. “Things have changed a lot since I first got here [in Sydney]. This is a huge game for us.

Franklin will make a rare media appearance on Tuesday morning at training in the wake of the two-word confirmation that he will keep playing beyond Saturday's premiership decider. Franklin was made All-Australian captain in 2018 and was asked what he would tell the ceremonial team if it was about to play a game. Franklin wears the same 23 on his back that Jordan famously did for the Chicago Bulls and Sydney cheekily copied the format of Jordan's 1995 NBA comeback when they released a statement on Monday night, confirming the Swans star would play on in 2023.
