Make me a Lion: Bulldogs midfielder confirms trade request (AFL)

Despite interest from Port Adelaide and a contract offer from the Bulldogs, Josh Dunkley has requested a trade to Brisbane.

The Lions could try to use future selections to land Dunkley or be prepared to go into a significant draft points deficit, which would push back their first pick next year. He polled the most votes of any Bulldog in Sunday night's Brownlow Medal and is a strong chance to take out the club's best and fairest. He is out of contract and not a free agent, meaning the Lions would need to secure a trade to get him over the line. Dunkley's sister plays netball in Queensland and his family regularly holidays in the state. They could also use their top pick in this year's draft in a deal for Dunkley and then use a future first-round pick to trade in multiple second-round picks this year to land more points to pay for the father-son duo. Dog wants out: Rival AFL contender wins three-club trade race as $4.5m deal revealed.

It means a tricky trade period looms for Brisbane, which will have to find enough draft points to match early bids on father-son guns Will Ashcroft — the clear Pick 1 favourite — and Jaspa Fletcher — a first-round prospect. The Power’s long-term offer for Dunkley was around $650,000 per season. He kicked 18 goals and averaged 25 disposals per game this season.

With his partner playing professional netball in Adelaide, the Dogs star has made a shock call.

“The club was clearly intent on Josh staying with the Bulldogs, having tabled an attractive contract offer for him to continue with us for the long term. “Josh has been weighing up this decision for some time and this news is obviously disappointing for the club. The Lions will have to satisfy the Bulldogs with a trade, which puts them in a precarious position, given the points they will need to match an inevitable bid for Ashcroft at pick No.1. Stream them all for free on Dunkley and father-son prospect Will Ashcroft will add some much needed class and depth to Brisbane’s core midfield group, along with Hugh McCluggage, Neale, Jarrod Berry and Cameron Rayner, who is being given more and more time in the centre square. The 25-year-old is a massive coup for Brisbane, who need some help for Lachie Neale in the centre square.
