The Sydney marathon is in the first year of a three-year candidacy to join the prestigious World Marathon Majors. Australian Sinead Diver - who was a creditable 10th in the marathon at last year's Tokyo Olympics - claimed victory in the women's half-marathon at the Sydney Running Festival in a course record of 1:13:07. Race organisers lured a bevy of top athletes to the event as they stage a bid to join the ranks of the world majors.

Australian Sinead Diver won the women’s event, her a time of 1:13:07, followed by Kageyama Tomoka from Japan and fellow Australian Fiona Yates. The marathon was held virtually in 2020 and 2021. Cape Town in South Africa and Chengdu in China are also in the running to become majors.

Another race record fell in Blackmores Half Marathon, with Sinead Diver (Albert Park, VIC) crossing over the finish line in a course record time of 01:13:07. Jun Hiromichi (Japan) took the title of the Blackmores Sydney Wheelchair Marathon male champion, completing the course in 01:52:47. In the women’s event, it was Tigist Girma Getachew (Ethiopia) who flew across the finish line in an impressive time of 02:25:10. The previous record was set by Yuta Shitara (Japan) in 02:07:50 on the Gold Coast in 2019. Over 36,000 runners and walkers took over the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge today, marking the 20th anniversary of Australia’s largest running festival, Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.
