Lakers work out former lottery picks after Dennis Schroder signing (ClutchPoints)

With Dennis Schroder locked into their 14th roster spot, the Los Angeles Lakers are trying to add depth on the wings.

We are really excited for Dennis to get to camp and get back to work in L.A. For the price of a non-guaranteed veteran minimum contract, what more could you really ask for? Or will he again be looking for a new team in 2023, marking his fourth in three years? But after almost signing him to a now-laughable four-year, $84 million contract back in 2021, Rob Polinka has to be lauded for bringing back the well-traveled veteran guard at a serious discount. Will Schroder be able to re-capture his former glory in LA? Dennis will add both depth and an on-ball defensive presence to our core at the guard position.

possibly including a future first-round selection and the right to swap future picks, which seems reasonable. So apparently Westbrook and Schroder will be given the first crack at point guard rotation minutes, 6'1" Patrick Beverley and 6'2" Kendrick Nunn will serve as shooting guards, and 6'5" Austin Reaves will spot LeBron James at small foward. Second-round draft pick Max Christie, a shooting guard out of Michigan State, will most likely feel the rotation squeeze as well. Beverley can convincingly defend bigger guards, but Nunn can barely guard point guards and would presumably get smothered on the other end. Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverley were both starters last year on their respective clubs, while Schröder was a part-time starter playing big minutes in Boston (though he got less run in Houston). Marc Stein reports that, somewhat surprisingly, the Lakers are currently envisioning Westbrook as a big part of their backcourt rotation heading into the team's training camp, which opens later this month.

In his peak days with the Boston Celtics, Thomas was a two-time All-Star and league MVP candidate. But a major hip injury greatly impacted his career trajectory, and he has never been the same player since. Though Lamb may be the bigget name among these players, he may have the least upside at this point in his career. Apparently, the Lakers are looking to fill out their roster.

NBA Free Agency: Lakers reportedly working out Shabazz ... (Silver Screen and Roll)

Lakers have reportedly brought in Jeremy Lamb, Dwayne Bacon, Miye Oni, and Shabazz Muhammad for workouts · Could the Lakers use a Dennis Schröder return? — I ...

Although it’s nice to see the Lakers recognizing a position of weakness and trying to address it, at this point in free agency, there are slim pickings. The only way out of this mess would be acquiring a wing via trade, which would solve more than one of the team’s current problems. He hasn’t even suited up in the G League since 2019-20, so Oni would be a pure flier considering what a blank slate he’s been in his NBA career. But he’s 6’6, which was apparently the only barrier of entry for this particular workout. [On the first episode of the Cole Swider show](https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Frss.com%2Fpodcasts%2Fswidershow%2F618154%2F&referrer=sbnation.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.silverscreenandroll.com%2F2022%2F9%2F17%2F23358284%2Flakers-news-workouts-shabazz-muhammad-jeremy-lamb-dwayne-bacon-miye-oni-last-roster-spot), Swider — who is presently on a two-way contract with the Lakers — said that he has seen significant interest from free agents trying to join the Lakers before training camp because several of them have shown up at the team practice facility: You can follow Sabreena on Twitter at [@sabreenajm](http://twitter.com/sabreenajm). So when they see two open roster spots on the Lakers, a lot of people are interested, playing with Lebron, playing on that stage.” Other than not turning the ball over, it’s hard to find much of anything that Bacon excels at. He’s an excellent rebounder for a wing and blocks shots at an extremely high rate. The best opportunity to find a quality wing to play next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis would have come in July, and the Lakers struck out then. At 6’5, he looks like a 2-guard, though his 6’11 wingspan allows him to play up a position defensively. So we’re having all these guys come in for free agent workouts and everything like that.

Rumored Russell Westbrook To Indiana Pacers Trade Could Be ... (Forbes)

Several reports have indicated the Los Angeles Lakers may be looking to move guard Russell Westbrook. Could the Indiana Pacers be a trade fit?

Teams are permitted to trade swap rights in a draft — for example, the Lakers could offer the Pacers swap rights in the first round of the 2028 NBA Draft. The Lakers can send up to $6.3 million in a trade and as low as just over $100 thousand. If none of those tweaks — pick protections, swaps, additional salary, younger players, or cash — help get a deal done, the Lakers and Pacers would likely have to alter the framework entirely. That could be a unique way to balance the trade. In that scenario, if the Lakers ended up with a better first-round pick than the Pacers in 2028, the teams could flip draft slots in the first round. Executing a swap with the Lakers means the Pacers could not trade Turner to a different franchise. The Lakers, on the other hand, would want to trade as few picks as possible with strong protections. The Pacers would theoretically want as many picks as possible from the Lakers, and they want those picks to be unprotected. Horton-Tucker has since been dealt to Utah, he cannot be in any trade between the Lakers and Pacers now. First and foremost, enticing a team to take on Westbrook’s massive contract is a requirement for the Lakers in any deal. Additionally, the Pacers have to consider the opportunity cost of moving Hield and Turner in this hypothetical deal. As a result, the two teams have felt like natural trade partners in a possible Westbrook deal.

In July 2023 the Lakers could not only be flushed with enough cash to add another maximum-salary-level player but also in possession of their first-round picks from 2027 and 2029. They revealed that by the time free agency rolls around in July 2023, the Los Angeles Lakers could potentially have a max salary slot, and valuable future first-round picks. However, keeping Russell Westbrook also has risks when it comes to the Lakers' immediate chances of competing during the upcoming 2022-23 season. As it stands, the Lakers only have James ($46.9 million), Davis ($40.6 million) and rookie Max Christie ($1.7 million) under contract for the 2023-24 campaign. Though there have been other pathways for the Los Angeles Lakers to move Russell Westbrook, the team has resisted doing that thus far. Russell Westbrook has not had a good season with the Los Angeles Lakers, and there's no doubt that he has been the target of a lot of criticism.
