Brownlow Medal guide — from Lachie Neale to Clayton Oliver and ... (ABC News)

Adelaide - Rory Laird · Brisbane - Lachie Neale* · Carlton - Patrick Cripps* · Collingwood - Jack Crisp and Nick Daicos · Essendon - Zach Merrett and Darcy Parish ...

The most likely two are utility players Nick Daicos and Jack Crisp, who both spent time in defence and midfield. Will the umpires have a similar view? Under Craig McRae, the Pies have shot to prominence, not on the back of any single player but thanks to a coherent team effort. Last year, Marcus Bontempelli came second with 33 votes. It's been that sort of year. With his marks in the midfield and big tackling — fourth in the AFL — Mills helped shape the play in a huge year for the Swans. But for consistency throughout and as the overall stand-out, it's Callum Mills who is the pick to poll the most votes in red and white in 2022. This time around it is Oliver who is the most likely to take the medal for the Demons — consistently brilliant, the Dees' number 13 was a true stand-out in 2022 and could well have up to half a dozen maximum vote games. Last year, Sam Walsh produced an incredible year to finish fourth with 30 votes. It's been a tough season for the Bombers, and it won't be a surprise that there is no candidate to win the medal. It's hard to pick a leader for the Collingwood vote count for the Brownlow this year, and the reason isn't hard to find. So, who are the main contenders for tonight's prize — and who are in the mix to top the vote count for the 18 AFL clubs?

Will face strong competition for votes from Oliver and Gawn. Didn’t have as many possessions as last year when he polled 17 votes, but the Suns won three more games which will hold him in good stead. The gun midfielder stepped up in the absence of injured skipper Nat Fyfe to lead the Dockers back into the finals for the first time since 2015. AFL.com.au predictor: 30 At one point his hopes looked over when he was suspended for two matches in round 21, but he successfully overturned the ban at the appeals board. Started the season like a house on a fire and could have a perfect nine votes after three rounds. Betfair predictor: 25.5 The midfield maestro continues to get better and better and this year was no exception as he averaged close to 33 disposals and eight clearances a game. The Lions won 15 games so Neale will have plenty of chances to poll and he won’t face much competition for votes from his teammates aside from silky midfielder Hugh McCluggage. Round 2: The key forward helped deliver the club's first win of 2022 with a scintillating six-goal outing against the Eagles. Round 21: Larkey went one better than Round 2 at the pointy end of the season with seven goals against Sydney. Round 13: Two weeks later, Goldstein stood out again from a North Melbourne perspective with 33 hitouts, four clearances, 13 disposals and two goals against the Giants. Round 20: A valiant effort in the midfield saw Simpkin come away with a career-high 41 disposals against Essendon. The 53-point loss will hurt his chances of polling maximum votes, but his two-goal, 30-hitout and 16-disposal performance could see him pinch one. Round 17: Davies-Uniacke had a career-best day on the hallowed turf of the MCG against Collingwood. North Melbourne's second win of 2022 should see it take home all six votes, but how many does the number 12 add to his tally? He left Adelaide Oval with 37 disposals, 11 clearances, 10 inside-50s and one goal to his name. The most memorable of the bag came at the death though as a textbook Todd Goldstein tap landed straight in the path of the lurking forward who went on to boot the go-ahead goal and eventual match-winner. The ruckman was as smooth-moving as ever in his 16th season in the AFL, coming away with a fourth-place finish in the Syd Barker Medal count. Key games Round 22: Despite Adelaide kicking away in the final term to record a 29-point win over the Roos, 'LDU' continued to emerge as a star midfielder of the League.

But teammate Clayton Oliver is going to stifle Petracca’s charge, as the duo essentially take votes from each other in the early rounds as the Dees’ mounted a remarkable 10-game winning run. Miller was arguably best on ground in losses to Collingwood, Melbourne and Geelong – but those clubs are stacked full of talent who could poll ahead of him. Impressive games in the opening six rounds could set up Brayshaw’s Brownlow run – depending on how the umpires see his efforts. Cripps absolutely exploded out of the gates to start the season to produce the best form of his career with dominant performance after dominant performance. Oliver rarely played a bad game and was dominant in nearly all of the Demons’ wins including their 10-game streak to start the season. (All odds via Pointsbet.) -Round 8 W v St Kilda (38 disposals, 4 tackles, 8 clearances) -Round 7 W v Hawthorn (33 disposals, 7 marks, 8 inside 50s) -Round 10 W v North Melbourne (45 disposals, 13 inside 50s, 13 clearances) But all signs point to Neale finishing on the podium and potentially claiming his second ‘Charlie’. -Round 5 W v Collingwood (33 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 goal) -Round 2 W v Essendon (41 disposals, 2 goals, 12 clearances)

[Teammate] Sam Docherty has 33 but the umpires were well aware of how well Cripps is going at this point. So after three rounds, he could have nine votes. I think Charlie Cameron gets a best on ground maybe in there too. The 27-year-old is likely to be right up near the top of the leaderboard through the first half of the season, before sliding out of contention due to a rough patch in the middle of the year. "I don't think anyone takes regular votes off [Neale]. that it dawns on you how special it is," Dangerfield said. "Neale had 37 (disposals) one game and don't kick a goal, same game McCluggage had 33 and kicked a goal, so McCluggage could get the three votes there and Neale the two." The Carlton captain tallied over 30 disposals in six of his first seven matches, with the only outlier in round four when he was subbed out at quarter-time against the Suns. I know they had a season that was largely in the top-four - they fell out of the top four come finals - but I don't think there were regular vote-getters that are going to worry him," he said. However, it was during a 10-game stretch in the middle of the season where the 25-year-old really put the team on his back, averaging a stupendous 36.5 touches per game in that period. Gillon McLachlan says he is “very agitated” by the shock ruling that saw Patrick Cripps eligible to win the Brownlow medal.

In an interview released in the AFL Record on Monday, McLachlan says the board’s ruling “made no sense to me”. “So, I have asked the guys to review the system and we will see where that lands.” “It made no sense to me in any way and it is frustrating to have a legal view about due process or procedural fairness - a complete nonsense - really affect a clear mandate to protect the head. In an interview bombshell that was released on Monday, the AFL boss described the AFL appeals board’s infamous decision to overturn a two-match suspension as “complete nonsense”. The appeals board found that the tribunal’s decision did not “afford procedural fairness” due to the lack of clear directions given by Tribunal chairperson Jeff Gleeson.
