Vampire Academy' Stars Say Show's Diversity Shouldn't Be 'A Thing' (Today.com)

The stars of Peacock's new Vampire Academy talk Lissa and Rose, diverse casting in the fantasy genre, character storylines, relationships and how the show ...

For it to be so normal to watch a fantasy show or any show that you love and see all kinds of people that look completely different, that sound completely different. It’s great to see a character you love overcome their adversity, and see characters supporting each other through trauma. As the goes on, you see Lissa say, “I can’t afford to not be political. When you watch any type of fantasy show you get lost in the world and attached to these characters. And it’s really cute, the fans are really really excited. I got a letter from this beautiful girl on Twitter like, “It’s so cool to see a Black girl be sassy, powerful, and valued.” We know exactly how they feel and that makes us feel good. I have to see what’s going on.” I think it’ll be really great for people to watch that and see a little bit of themselves in that, especially young people who may find politics annoying. It is thrilling and enrapturing in its rumination on relationships and the way trauma and grief attempts to isolate us — all while serving some of the most exquisite fight choreography around. In fact, almost the entire cast is played by people of color. In case you missed the YA novel and 2014 movie adaptation craze, here’s the low-down on “Vampire Academy”: A conventionally evil group of vampires known as the Strigoi are hunting down their elitist, magic-wielding Moroi vampire counterparts. Did one with Keiron (Moore), came out feeling really really good and I was like “I might actually do this!” This character I love and have loved since I was fourteen. For their part Strigoi are what you expect of vampires; immortal, sunlight-burning blood freaks with no humanity and an immutable obsession with all-black outfits.

Vampire Academy EPs Explain Key Book-to-TV Changes, Including ... (TVLine)

With the premiere of Peacock's 'Vampire Academy,' school is officially back in session at St. Vladimir's.

I mentally boycotted the movie as a fan of the books, so I never saw it. “So much of Rose and Lissa’s friendship — what they experienced growing up, the things they saw, the trauma that happened to them, the losses they suffered — was told as part of their backstory,” Plec says. “With complete respect to the filmmakers who made the movie, I took great umbrage with the company that decided to market it like Mean Girls with vampires. It’s a cool way to tell the story.” They let us celebrate casting from all over the world, letting these actors be their true, authentic selves, rather than just casting based on what it says the character looks like in the books.” “So you get all this visual candy, plus the whole world comes together in one dominion.

Another vampire teen drama based on a book series of the same name and directed by Julie Plec? Lissa and Rose’s close bond, along with their forbidden romances with Christian and Dimitri respectively, fly in the face of vampire society’s strictures, and their struggle to maintain their self-determination will become a catalyst for rebellion. The trailer also teases a more intimate scene between Rose and her instructor Dimitri, Lissa sitting at a grave, and some kind of ceremony. Vladimir’s Academy, an institution hell-bent on binding them into the roles their society has decreed for them: Lissa as the next monarch whose role will be to maintain the power structures that already exist, and Rose as servant and guardian with no will of her own. The trailer also shows how Rose and Lissa start to develop a psychic link. The first four episodes are currently scheduled to arrive on the day of the premiere. She’s a veteran of horror as well, having appeared in Children of the Corn and Bloody Hell. The series is set to have ten episodes in its first season. In Vampire Academy, Christian is another royal vampire who is smart as heck and has a huge part to play in the upcoming show. She had a main role in the series Tracy Beaker Returns, and The Dumping Ground, as well as The Dumping Ground Survival Files and The Dumping Ground: I’m…, all portraying the same character, Tee Taylor. Within the series, he is played by Andre Dae Kim, a young actor who has had plenty of roles in television prior to his part in the new Peacock series. He also had a recurring part in the HBO Max series, Generation. A vampire noble, all he wants is to make sure that his family is safe, as well as the Moroi vampires as a whole. After their success with The Vampire Diaries franchise, Julie Plec and Marguerite Macintyre sink their teeth into Vampire Academy - a new book adaptation ...

You will see things that are familiar to you, but you will not necessarily see them in the order that you're expecting. But then being able to expand it because we were able to shoot abroad, we shot in Spain, we got to have this beautiful expansive world they talk about in the books, but we got to make the visual imagery just gonzo, because we got to go shoot in Europe. It works you 12/15/16 hour days and how great if this could be the kind of business where we could both take everything we can from artists like ourselves who are willing to give as much as they can, but still maybe get them home for dinner every now and then to like kiss their kids goodnight. Probably most of the things that you see at some point or another in the book series you will end up seeing in this series as well. So we really just dove in, wanting to be as respectful of the source material as possible while still adapting a series that was written a good almost 20 years ago into today. Those are the stories that I like to tell in this particular genre. So it was just always in the back of my head as I carried on with my life and found different ways to tell stories about vampires from different books. You've got to have someone to walk the earth with if you're going to be walking the earth forever. Some people really respond to this sort of seductiveness, the idea that you can be that bold, magnificent, sexy, dangerous creature. In 2007/8 when I read the books for the first time, it wasn't a show I think you could have done very easily for television. Julie: I did tweet in 2015 that the world would be a perfect place if I could do the Vampire Academy for television. Even as she continued to expand the TVD universe with The Originals and Legacies, she was still holding out hope to dip her feet into this other vampire universe.

Peacock's 'Vampire Academy' Series Should Take a Cue from the ... (IndieWire)

The novels, and show, follow Rose Hathaway (Sisi Stringer), a Dhampir attending the prestigious St. Vladmir's Academy with her best friend Vasilisa “Lissa” ...

The feature film lays out the vampire hierarchy as quickly as possible, and to watch the movie all you really need to know is a Moroi is a vampire and a Dhampir is a guardian. And the script has some truly laughable lines, such as this gem that’s meant to be romantic: “You’re a unicorn. The CGI leaves a lot to be desired, and while the actors are good, they’re not great. The story is meant to focus on teens in high school, and yet you wouldn’t know it considering that Peacock’s “Vampire Academy” pulls from the likes of Amazon’s recent “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot and Plec’s own “Vampire Diaries” world, emphasizing the sex, foul language, and in-depth political discussions like this is “Succession.” The 2014 film understood the dark humor of the high school world, giving us catty teen shenanigans and a prom sequence. This new adaptation of “Vampire Academy” follows the same trajectory as the book and is more of a reboot than continuation. We’ve certainly come a long way from the hedonism of ’80s vamps like “The Lost Boys.” The process of adapting anything is arduous, but sometimes the need to pare things down for an audience to digest it can be the best solution. Of the eight episodes available to press for review, at least half contain lengthy expositional passages for the characters to deliver about Moroi and Dhampir history and tradition. A failed Indiegogo campaign to finance a sequel went nowhere and the series stagnated until Peacock developed it for TV. So it’s no surprise that, in the wake of The CW’s long-running vampire series “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” and “Legacies,” that creator Julie Plec would want to turn to another YA version of vampire novels: Richelle Mead’s “ The novels, and show, follow Rose Hathaway (Sisi Stringer), a Dhampir attending the prestigious St.

Overall, the premiere of Vampire Academy was strong but, too ambitious that it feels like it will lose it all soon. August Richards as Victor Dashkov is still a tricky character to completely rely on but, the show is trying too hard for us to root for him. With this knowledge in hand, we encounter Rose and Lissa’s friendship which starts off a little differently than it did in the books as well as the movies. Vampire Academy unfolds with a new narrative style keeping the storyline intact but, changing certain characters, their intentions and their origin story. In Vampire Academy Episode 1, we are introduced to the Dhampir guardian in-training, Rose and her best friend, a Moroi, Lissa Dragomir of a royal family line. Developed by Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, the series will serve as the second adaptation of the book series after the 2014 film of the same name starring Zoey Deutch and Lucy Fry that was ultimately a box-office bomb.

Strigoi Vampires in 'Vampire Academy' — Explained (Distractify)

In the Peacock series 'Vampire Academy,' there's more than one type of vampire. The antagonists of the series are known as Strigoi, but who are they?

In the world of Vampire Academy, there is only one way to transform a Strigoi from their state: to stab a Strigoi with a silver stake enchanted with Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Spirit through the heart. In Vampire Academy, Strigoi are "the bad vampires." The class system present in both the Vampire Academy show and the books presents an interesting twist to a classic vampire narrative. Strigoi also have less "humanity" and are possessed with an animalistic instinct to hunt and feed. In mythology, strigoi are troubled spirits rose from the grave, could turn into animals, could turn invisible, and gained vitality from the blood of their victims. There are the dhampirs (half-vampire, half-humans) who protect the Moroi (the ruling class of vampires).

The pilot plants the seeds for a lot of different plot points to sprout and grow, giving the audience just enough to know who is who and what is what.

A good cast and an intriguing story, with room for a lot of twists and turns. The music opted mainly to use existing pop songs to highlight the scenes, and seeing as the target audience is probably a lot younger than me, I can see where this is probably a good choice, though I prefer originally composed songs over trying to fit existing music into a scene. They are the enemies of the Moroi and Dhampir. I fear there maybe a downside in attempting to fit the full complexity of this world into a ten-episode first season. I have only had time to screen the first episode of the series, but Peacock released the first four all at once, which was probably a smart move. The Moroi are the royal and noble ruling class, they make the rules.

Their friendship doesn’t have the giggles Fry and Deutch did in Vampire Academy (2014), but Nieves and Stringer have an inlaid history and trust, which is essential to exhibit for the shadow-kiss bond to make sense. I was impressed by Rose (Stinger) and Mason’s (Liner) spar; the coordination looked like a real fight, which sometimes can go amiss on TV. Now, in the 2022 adaptation, Rose (Stinger) has an accent, and Lissa (Nieves) does not. Let’s hope some of the other writers have more to give in that department; the actors could use the elevated material. Plec and MacIntyre seem to miss some of the subtleties and nuances of mental illness. In the 2014 Vampire Academy movie, Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry) had an accent, and Rose Hathaway (Zoe Deutch) did not. [2007](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/345627.Vampire_Academy)) is already being remedied in the new Pilot as Rose’s class ranking is deteriorated by her newfound connection to Lissa post-crash. I see how Plec and MacIntyre can manipulate the first minute of the Pilot with the narration and the backstory to include a “previously on” kind of recap. Mia paints Sonya as peculiar, like in the books, and calls her the “bird lady”. They’ve also transformed the original Mia Rinaldi into Mia Karp, who seems to mix with Natalie Dashkov’s character from the books as Mia Karp (Mia McKenna-Bruce) is introduced as Victor Dashkov’s (J. I also must point out that, although Lissa’s parents are canonically sweet and connected to their children, Eric Dragomir’s reaction to Andre’s playboy exploits was too casual and not at all parent-like; he also looked closer in age to Andre than a father ought to even if he is a vampire—case in point, the ever-ageing Queen (Pik Sen Lim). We also spent more time with Andre and Lissa’s parents pre-car crash, which graced our screens with a shocking butt cameo I’m positive no one was expecting, and a sex scene that struggled to convince us Andre was the sex god he was supposed to be.
