The 'bizarre' move that has Cats 'primed' as unlikely star solves big finals problem.

Not only have they won six of their past eight games overall, they’ve also matched up well against the Cats in their past three matches. So it’s (Jarrod) Berry, (Hugh) McCluggage, Lachie Neale getting a hold of the Cats at stoppage and scoring from that source.” In fact, the Cats have lost the points differential from clearance count in 12 games this season. “They’ve planned this to the week,” Riewoldt said. Mark Blicavs has also had a career-best season in his return to the Cats’ on-ball brigade. Later in the game, the Cats were outnumbered four-on-two in their defensive 50 with the Pies moving the ball forward, this time at speed. Cameron, himself, has arguably been the best player in the competition this season. On another slow Pies play, six Cats defenders were positioned almost in a straight line from one wing to the other. More importantly, they have the skill to execute the change mid-game. “I always thought with the ability to score they always went too slow … To tick that first final box and get that away, get the week off and really set yourself.” The Cats this season are ranked third for points scored and, just as importantly, first for scores per inside 50.

A place in the 2022 AFL grand final is on the line as minor premier Geelong and resurgent Brisbane face off in a preliminary final at the MCG not to be ...

Not sure Geelong could have asked for a better start to the game. Hasn't exactly felt like a preliminary final just yet, but the Lions are certainly bringing the physical heat. If Chris Scott was thinking of sending a hard tag to the Brownlow favourite, now might be a good time. A 50/50 one, but Stengle will take the shot from the pocket... How casual was the banana from Tyson Stengle? First behind of the night. fades to the right. That was their best passage of play from a defensive stoppage through to a shot inside 50. That one stings the Lions, who would have loved where they were placed with 10 seconds to go in the quarter. Geelong might feel they can put a gap in them in the first 10 minutes of this quarter. Geelong vs Brisbane Lions - AFL preliminary final: Live score, team ... (Daily Mail)

Follow Sportsmail's live blog for the AFL preliminary final clash between Geelong and Brisbane Lions at the MCG.

To describe Geelong as the most consistent in the AFL over the past two decades would be a major understatement. Geelong have had the brighter start at the MCG and they have made life tough for Brisbane in the middle of the park so far. We have had the traditional Welcome to Country and a lovely rendition of Advance Australia Fair and it's all ready to go. Only Richmond and Brisbane scored more points in the home-and-away season than the minor premiers, who are just as solid defensively - conceding a league-best 64 points a game since Round 15. Chris Fagan's men were a minute away from yet another disappointing finals exit against Richmond, only for Joe Daniher to stab home the crucial goal. Lachie Neale wins a clearance in the middle of the field, but his kick is intercepted. Geelong move the ball forward quickly and Patrick Dangerfield takes a mark in traffic. Brisbane made the first four tackles of the match, a significant number given they averaged two tackles per game less than their opponents throughout the season. He takes the mark on the run, before drilling his kick through the posts. The Cats finish the quarter as they started it, with Max Holmes kicking his first major of the night. Callum Ah Chee kicks his first of the night and how the Lions needed that. Brandon Starcevich is caught in possession by Tyson Stengle as the Cats' suffocating pressure finally pays dividends.

2022 AFL Finals: Geelong Cats vs Brisbane Lions preview ... (Canberra Weekly)

Match day guide and preview for the 2022 AFL Preliminary Final between the Geelong Cats and Brisbane Lions.

They’ve played one other final, a 2020 Prelim that Geelong won comfortably at the Gabba. Eric Hipwood stood tall in the absence of Joe Daniher, while Daniel Rich was also busy. Jeremy Cameron was also influential as always, while Tom Atkins was enormous in the last quarter. Coming up against Geelong’s outstanding defensive unit, the Lions are going to need a couple of their star forwards to step up and Hipwood is the man in form. Cameron has been one of the best players in the AFL this season and was fantastic in the Cats’ first final. With Joe Daniher a late out against the Dees, Hipwood was the number one man up forward for Brisbane and he delivered in spades. [a thrilling win over the Tigers in week one of the finals](https://canberraweekly.com.au/lions-edge-tigers-in-epic-afl-elimination-final/), Brisbane travelled to the MCG, a venue they hadn’t won at since 2014, and sent the reigning premiers packing in straight sets with [a comeback 14.8 (92) to 11.13 (79) victory](https://canberraweekly.com.au/lions-send-demons-packing-in-stunning-upset/). They looked all but gone trailing by 22 points at half-time, but a lift in pressure around the footy brought them back into the game and they ran over the top of Melbourne in the fourth quarter. Lions 16 wins. Cats 23 wins. Gary Rohan came into the game under pressure for previous poor performances in finals, but took a big mark and kicked a long bomb from 50m to get Geelong back into the game. The Cats came into this finals series as the red-hot premiership favourites and got the fright of their lives against Collingwood in the Qualifying Final.

We’re working to restore it. Rayner has had his ankle re-strapped on the bench and is looking positive to return. We’re sorry, this feature is currently unavailable. Holmes was looking distressed on the boundary and has now been taken down to the rooms. Gryan Miers has booted his second of the night and given Geelong a very handsome 50-point margin. Things aren’t looking good for Lions, with their forwards barely able to get hands on the ball.

Cats surge into another Grand Final as 'embarrassing' Lions belted in 22-year low.

Cam Rayner suffered a nasty rolled ankle not long after and had to be taken off the ground in the hand of trainers. They’re a little bit more cautious tonight,” he said on Channel 7. Not let it get out of hand... Geelong kept its foot in the pedal in the fourth quarter, with Cameron and Hawkins kicking the first two goals to blow the margin out to a massive 75 points. “They are a different group, they are a different looking group. To Brisbane’s credit though, it didn’t throw the towel in with everything against it, kicking a couple of goals in the fourth term against the grain. the class divide was enormous. “(He’s) Been enormous.” “It’s crunch time right here now, 28-point margin, Brisbane need to just reel that back a little. It was built for now, it was built for tonight and for next week,” Saints champion Nick Riewoldt said. Dangerfield continued his hot start to the game with a second goal among a game-high eight disposals to start the game. The Cats looked on from the opening bounce in a dominant start to the game from Patrick Dangerfield, who was best afield after finishing with 28 disposals and two goals.

Blicavs took ruck contests forward of centre then played as a midfielder when the footy was in the defensive half. As cool as ever under the high ball then distributed efficiently on the rebound. Kicked the first goal of the game after an awesome mark running back with the flight of the ball then plucking a terrific intercept mark. Hit the scoreboard, hit teammates inside 50 and was able to negate the influence of Daniel Rich. Came from the ground in the first term for assessment on his ribs and seemed restricted. Took him until midway through the second term to register a disposal, but it was a strong mark, kick and goal. Began the game on the bench before being injected into the midfield. Was terrific in and under, applying strong defensive pressure and snapping a crucial goal on the quarter-time siren. Began the game as a high half-forward trying to drag Daniel Rich up the ground.
