Playing this brand of conservative, mistake-free ball won’t win you a lot of championships, but it certainly won’t hurt Seattle’s chances. Seahawks fans got a good look at Geno Smith last season as he started three games while Russell Wilson’s hand was injured. Much of the country hasn’t seen Smith starting for an NFL team since the 2014 season, though.

Why was Geno Smith named Seahawks QB1 over Drew Lock ... (Sporting News)

When the post-Russell Wilson era begins in Seattle, it will be veteran quarterback Geno Smith under center for the Seahawks.

Smith, who signed with the Seahawks as a free agent in 2019, has three seasons' worth of familiarity under his belt, including three starts in place of an injured Wilson during the 2021 season. He's going to keep growing and pushing and developing as a fantastic player. Ultimately, that setback was too much for Lock to overcome. This year, the Seahawks were among a number of teams with a quarterback competition that would be decided during training camp. He'll give us the best chance to be playing great football right off the bat. As the preseason wound down, it became more and more evident that Smith would be QB1, which was confirmed by head coach Pete Carroll following Seattle's preseason finale.

NFL world reacts to Geno Smith cooking Broncos on first drive (The Comeback)

The Seahawks got the ball first in Monday's game against the Broncos and for Geno Smith and his teammates, things went perfectly.

But his time there as the team’s full-time starting quarterback is off to a good start. One drive obviously doesn’t prove that Smith will ultimately settle in and be an effective quarterback for Seattle. “He can get the ball out of his hands, working with his line and his guys and all that. He was kind of the guy that started all that. And remember all the catch and run stuff and all the quick rhythm stuff that he was famous for, that was so the quarterback didn’t have to be carrying the load. He designed his offense to make it as easy as possible for the quarterbacks because he knew the position was so hard to play. This exactly fits Carroll’s quarterback preferences over time, and why he was okay in the end with trading Wilson to Denver for three players and a horde of draft picks. So far, Geno Smith has been exactly that guy.

Geno Smith hears chants, relishes Seahawks opening victory (The Washington Post)

Geno Smith left the field hearing his name chanted after the Seattle Seahawks opened the regular season with an unexpected victory over the Denver Broncos.

It was the first time since 1971 there had been that large of a time gap for a quarterback between opening week starts. It made for a nervy final few moments for Smith as he watched Denver try to rally. He finished 23 of 28 for 195 yards, but was 17 of 18 for 164 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. He added a 25-yard strike to Colby Parkinson in the second quarter that gave Seattle a 17-7 lead at the time. “He was so poised and so calm in this game. Smith threw a 38-yard touchdown to Will Dissly on Seattle’s first possession of the season.

Once the Broncos turned the ball over a second time while knocking on the door of the end zone, destiny just felt as if it belonged to the Seahawks. While Wilson threatened to play spoiler and steal the game at the end, inexplicable clock management on the Broncos' final series left Denver unable to complete the comeback, securing a 17-16 win for the Seahawks on "Monday Night Football."

Wilson had 340 yards on 29-for-42 through the air, but what mattered most is the Broncos’ red zone chances that were awful. There was a lot to like about Smith, who started his first game in eight years. But he didn’t get enough yardage to give McManus a better look at the game-winning field goal.

Smith would suffer a torn ACL, and that would be the end of his Jets career. The next day, former Jets head coach and current Bills head coach picked up Enemkpali, in an underrated and hilarious element of the whole ordeal. Smith would stay on with the Jets the following season, again relieving Fitzpatrick and earning a start. Fitzpatrick would have the most prolific passing season for a Jets quarterback in franchise history. 11, 2015, Smith was (right) handed — literally, handed — a punch at the hands of Jets defensive end IK Enemkpali, opening the door for backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to take the job and run with it. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Smith had promised to pay back the $600 to Enemkpali, but apparently not quick enough for Enemkpali, who deposited a right hand on his jaw, instead.

Making his first Week 1 start since 2014, Geno Smith helped lead the Seahawks to a 17-16 win over the Broncos.

The moment came to him, and he was ready for it. "Because of the four years of being in the system and being loved up and taken care of and looked after, and he did his part in reserve to always be there for us. The experience that he had, the guys—he was so poised and calm in this game. "He just hasn't had the perfect opportunity for him to go out there and showcase what he really is able to do when he is in full control of an offense. We were talking as the game is going on, and he is having fun and laughing and enjoying it. He also dismissed the idea that being a backup for much of his career was some sort of hardship to overcome. "I'm in the NFL for 10 years, so to say what I've been through is kind of funny. I've just been blessed enough to be in the NFL for ten years and been working my butt off. That's why we had the belief in him, and that's why he was able to win the job and go out there on Monday Night Football and win the football game." "He took off, and I was so mad at him the time he was running up the sidelines and got smoked on their sidelines. For most of the last eight years, Smith has been viewed by most as a career backup, as the kind of guy you like having on your team and in your locker room, but not necessarily as the guy starting every Sunday. Smith's big day started on Seattle's first drive when he avoided a blitzing linebacker, stepped up in the pocket, then floated a pass to Will Dissly for a 38-yard score.
