While most men at award ceremonies tend to stick with a classic black suit or tux, this year’s Emmys saw many male nominees mix it up slightly by showing up in clean white suits, including Nicholas Braun (best supporting drama actor nominee for “Succession”), Andrew Garfield (best leading limited series actor nominee for “Under the Banner of Heaven”), Seth Rogen (best supporting limited series actor nominee for “Pam & Tommy”). Emmys 2022 Live Updates: Michael Keaton Wins for 'Dopesick' (The New York Times)

Matthew Macfadyen won best supporting actor in a drama for “Succession,” and Julia Garner won best supporting actress in a drama for “Ozark.

For this year’s race, HBO’s “Succession” is the favorite for best drama, with competition from Netflix’s “Squid Game” and the Apple TV+ rookie series, “Severance.” “Ted Lasso” is looking to repeat in best comedy with ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” hoping to pull off an upset. Or can Laura Linney (“Ozark”), a four-time Emmy winner, or Melanie Lynskey, a first-time nominee for “Yellowjackets,” put a stop to it? The second season of “Only Murders” streamed during the Emmy voting period, keeping it fresh in the minds of Emmy voters. Emmy producers of last year’s show made official what everyone already knew: The best limited series award is now right up there with the one for best drama as the most prestigious in television. “TV is all we have,” he added. Agree about both of those — and I love that both of them nod to old Hollywood icons and traditions in their gowns. Not only does “Abbott Elementary” get its first Emmy but it’s the right one: Sheryl Lee Ralph brings her character instantly to life. The first was Jackée Harry, who won for her role in the NBC sitcom “227” in 1987. Emmys 2022 LIVE updates: Australians steal the limelight as Squid ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Australian actor Murray Bartlett has won his first Emmy for his role as uptight concierge Armand in HBO's The White Lotus.

Attending the Emmys has been "a lovely reunion for us," Bartlett said. Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae has won outstanding lead actor in a drama series, pipping Succession’s double act of Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, as well as fan favourite Bob Odekirk from Better Call Saul. "You showed up every day in the face of global uncertainty away from loved ones," said one producer, speaking of the show's cast and crew. It was also the beginning of the show [so we had only just sat down]. Thank you for everyone who is a Rue, or has loved a Rue. "It's a dream job for an actor to juggle those things." We played with the levels of that,” Bartlett said. The moment his name was called out, Bartlett said he felt "shocked and happy. Australia’s Sarah Snook also missed out on outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, that Emmy being sachet by Julia Garner. Last year the HBO drama was, rather fittingly, pipped by The Crown. But it turned out she was right to tell the red carpet interviewers that she wasn’t even daring to think about what it would be like to win, because she too went home empty-handed. Though the series wrapped last month with what was widely hailed as a perfectly judged finale, Emmy rules might yet give Saul another shot next year.

Five takeaways from the 2022 Emmy awards (NPR)

The 2022 Emmys handed out awards to Succession, Squid Game, Abbott Elementary, The White Lotus, Ted Lasso, Lizzo's Here's To The Big Grrrls and others.

Jean Smart won for Hacks for lead actress in a comedy series for the second year in a row. It's more an observation of public reaction than of the show itself, but standards seem to have changed for when a show has won "too much." Even a second or third win can seem rote by now, so bring on the new contenders, and we'll be glad to see them. Zendaya, who won the award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for Euphoria two years ago, won again. Even the great Jean Smart, beloved by so many over such a tremendous career and absolutely marvelous on Hacks, might not have been the first choice of many people. The Emmys are starting to have an enviable problem: Even when people disagree with the outcome of a contest, it might be less that a show is undeserving and more that there's simply something else that deserves a shot in a stacked category. Lee Jung-jae won lead actor in a drama series for Squid Game, the first Asian man to ever be so honored. Amanda Seyfried took lead actress for The Dropout and Michael Keaton won for lead actor in Dopesick. Plus, Ted Lasso actors Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein won again in the lead and supporting categories. Perhaps the nicest surprise was Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, which broke RuPaul's Drag Race streak of four wins in the reality competition category. But there were also great speeches and encouraging wins, and we're here to look at five takeaways from the ceremony as a whole. At the same time winners fought for spare seconds, dull montages that were little more than "here are some TV shows" were allowed to linger, as were scripted bits that seemed less satisfying than the cut-off speeches, even when those sketches were performed by able comedians like host Kenan Thompson and the very funny Bowen Yang.

'A victory for the ages' – the biggest surprises at the 2022 Emmys (The Guardian)

Forget the fact that we're in the tedious 'Ted Lasso era' of the Emmys. Who really deserved their awards? And which win was nothing short of spectacular?

[Succession ](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/succession)and [The White Lotus](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/aug/16/the-white-lotus-review-a-magnificently-monstrous-look-at-how-the-other-half-live). [Barry](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/apr/03/barry-hbo-breaking-bad-bill-hader-assassin-sitcom) didn’t win a single thing. The Emmys’ inexplicable fondness for [Ozark](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/may/02/ozark-farewell-crime-show-laura-linney-jason-bateman-byrdes-ruth) meant that Julia Garner won best supporting actress, when the award really belonged to [Better Call Saul](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/better-call-saul)’s Rhea Seehorn. Her win was entirely deserved, especially if it means that more people will watch The Dropout. What a stunning performance that was; it was as if Seyfried managed to physically alter her entire DNA a few episodes in. But I was wrong, and this was a victory for the ages. And nothing is safer than Ted Lasso, the comedy equivalent of rice pudding. The seas can rise, the mountains can fall, the sun can expand and swallow us whole, but the Emmys will still be there, doing its absolute best to do the exact same thing as it did last year. One of the knottiest, darkest, most stylish programmes of the last 10 years, hot off a season that rivals anything that has ever been made. We all know how the Emmys work by now. It turns out that, like it or not, we are now deep in the

The Highs and Lows of the 2022 Emmys (The Cut)

The 2022 Emmy Awards celebrated Lizzo, 'The White Lotus,' 'Abbott Elementary,' and more. Here are all the moments from the Emmys you need to see.

Jerrod Carmichael won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for his deeply personal special, Rothaniel. Kel loves a reunion at the Emmys! Aside from a few “Bans Off Our Bodies” pins on the red carpet, not a word was uttered about the overturning of Roe v. “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media: someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me,” she said. To add salt in the wound, the drama tribute even included a clip of Mandy Moore in This Is Us, arguably one of the year’s biggest snubs. Who loves a reunion at the Emmys? Yes, it was one of the funnier spontaneous moments of the night, but it also never should have happened to such a legend. It was a well-deserved, hard-fought win, and, of course, she gave the most Jennifer Coolidge speech you could imagine, starting with her reveal that she took a lavender bath in preparation for the evening and ending with a little jig. The artist celebrated all the “big girls” on the show and beyond. First, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for his work behind the camera on “Red Light, Green Light.” Then Lee Jung-jae won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, making him the first South Korean actor to win as well as the first Asian actor to win — period. Then, when she got there, she [burst into song](https://www.thecut.com/2022/09/sheryl-lee-ralph-emmys-acceptance-speech.html), earning a rousing standing ovation from the crowd. The dancers were great, but the entire sequence felt offbeat and out of place.

I find the tiny stitching on Nicholas Hoult’s sleeve both threatening and endearing. Just because she’s great and she said she feels good in this look: Melanie Lynskey in Christian Siriano. Still, we stan Rue’s sponsor. The silhouette? The skin? We couldn’t pick just one — they all looked too good — so this is a title these queens will have to share.

The Best and Worst Moments of the 2022 Emmys (The New York Times)

A key to good comedy is having a distinctive voice. Sheryl Lee Ralph, the former “Dreamgirls” actress who won best supporting comedy actress for “Abbott ...

“The Amazing Race” has won 10 times, “The Voice” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” each four times, and no show had won the category in its first season. “The White Lotus,” the hit HBO series that skewered the entitled behavior of wealthy vacationers, scooped up five Primetime Emmys, including the award for best limited series. The series, Netflix’s most watched new series ever, according to the streamer, was also up for the Emmy for best drama, an award “Succession” ultimately won. Both “Barry” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” two of TV’s best comedies, got shut out. The point of the show is the speeches! The show played off engaging winners like Quinta Brunson and Jennifer Coolidge while making plenty of time for inane “copaganda” segments and slow bits that went nowhere. This year’s broadcast included a massive Kia ad, smuggled in under the guise of a sketch about TV dialogue. Of its seven total nominations, one was for best comedy; had “Abbott” won, it would have been the first network comedy to do so since “Modern Family” in 2014. The rhythm of the show was weirdly off. Based on its performance in its first time out, “Abbott” should be a top Emmy contender for years to come. There was also, in the success of series like “Abbott Elementary,” evidence that the broadcasters still have some Emmy relevance left in them, even as prestige cable and streaming services claimed the biggest prizes. Along the way, there was the usual array of leaden gags, shameless commercialism and genuinely poignant moments that transcended all the award-show contrivance.

Why Tom Holland didn't join Zendaya at Emmys 2022 (Page Six)

While Zendaya was making history at the Emmys 2022, one familiar face was noticeably absent: her boyfriend, Tom Holland.

Emmys 2022: The best and worst moments (Mashable)

"When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. "Thank you to director Hwang [Dong-hyuk] for making realistic problems we all face come to life so creatively on the screen with a great script and amazing visuals," said Lee. [Sheryl Lee Ralph's momentous acceptance speech](https://mashable.com/video/sheryl-lee-ralph-emmys-speech-song) and Jennifer Coolidge dancing to the play-off music to grating ads and confusing opening numbers, here are the best and worst moments from the 2022 Emmys... "Mum, Dad, Tara and Matt, Zebby and Bo, I fucking love you." "If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I'd be like, 'You gonna see that person, but bitch it's gonna have to be you.'" When Brunson was called to the stage, though, Kimmel didn't move — he kept lying there throughout her speech. Apparently the Emmys producers had other ideas, though, playing her off after only 70 seconds. Yellowjackets won nothing. Severance won nothing. The Emmys 2022 Needed More Wins Like Sheryl Lee Ralph's (Vanity Fair)

The Emmys tend to go all in on their favorite shows—nearly the entire casts of Schitt's Creek or Ted Lasso winning, or a multi-hyphenate like Waller-Bridge ...

They are why we watch awards shows and for the most part they delivered—a reminder that, even at the Emmys’ most redundant or sloppy, good TV can come out of giving actors shiny things. Sheryl Lee Ralph’s bracing win for comedy supporting-actress was a huge surprise in and of itself, but that had nothing on her astonishing speech—the best I’ve ever seen at the Emmys, and maybe any awards show. Winners were played off more egregiously than usual; given too little time to bring on a translator, for the Squid Game winners, say, or in the case of Jennifer Coolidge, barely giving her a second before cranking the play-off music up. As if anticipating hearing the same walk-up music over and over again, as has happened in years past—will we ever get the Schitt’s Creek theme song out of our heads?—a newly installed DJ played a bizarre, often discordant collection of top 40 hits from the past to welcome winners to their big moment. In an era of too much TV, the Television Academy decided a while ago to settle on a few favorites and call it a day. To the latter point, there was no Crown-level sweep; the most acting trophies that any show won was two, in The White Lotus and Ted Lasso; while most of the shows that always win won again, including Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, one streak was finally broken when Lizzo’s freshman Prime Video hit Watch Out for the Big Grrrls dethroned four-time reality-competition champ RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Emmys 2022: Succession, Ted Lasso, The White Lotus triumph (The Guardian)

There were few surprises – and a few standout speeches – for a telecast that handed out trophies mostly to repeat winners and clear favourites.

As with last year, the Emmys packed in over 25 awards around occasional bits from Thompson (as well as announcer Sam Jay), and a special Governor’s Award to the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which has worked to increase representation for women in front of an behind the camera. Squid Game, the first non-English language series ever nominated for best drama, kept Succession from taking a full sweep with wins for director Hwang Dong-hyuk and star Lee Jung-jae, the first person to win an acting award for a non-English language performance. Ralph, a 40-plus year veteran of the screen and first-time winner, took advantage of the Emmys’ pre-submitted thank yous that ticked on-screen below acceptance speeches and provided arguably the emotional highlight of the evening with a rendition of Endangered Species by Dianne Reeves. Noting that her “greatest wish for Euphoria was that it could help heal people”, the 26-year-old Dune star acknowledged those who shared stories related to her character, Rue, who struggles with addiction in the prestige HBO teen soap. HBO’s limited series The White Lotus, tied with Ted Lasso for second with 20 nominations apiece, swept all the awards for which it was nominated (the ensemble series about privilege and perversion at Hawaiian resort submitted all its performers to the supporting categories). The bit-packed show, hosted by Saturday Night Live veteran Kenan Thompson, included several back-to-back wins – Hacks’s Jean Smart for comedy actress, Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis for comedy actor and co-star Brett Goldstein as supporting – as well as repeat nods from previous years.

Ted Lasso actor wins and swears again at Emmys (The Guardian)

Brett Goldstein, who plays sweary Roy Kent, relapses into profanity in 'second-chance' acceptance speech.

Goldstein, who was born in Sutton, Surrey, and studied film at Warwick University, was hired as a writer by the Ted Lasso team. Jason Sudeikis, the show’s creator and star, won best lead actor in a comedy series. Ted Lasso centres on an eponymous NFL coach who moves to England to coach a struggling Premier League football team.

The Emmys Really Tried Some Things (Vulture)

A review of the 2022 Emmy Awards ceremony, hosted by 'Saturday Night Live' veteran Kenan Thompson, where 'Ted Lasso,' 'Succession' and 'The White Lotus' ...

Undeniably the most sublime of all was [Ralph’s acceptance speech](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-sheryl-lee-ralph-sings-acceptance-speech.html), when she launched into “Endangered Species,” using every molecule of oxygen in her lungs to celebrate her first Emmy win after years of working on the stage and screen. The rare time Zedd played something perfectly evocative of the past year in TV — Kate Bush’s [“Running Up That Hill”](https://www.vulture.com/tags/running-up-that-hill/) — it came during a moment that had absolutely nothing to do with Stranger Things. It was emotional, inspirational, the sort of spontaneous expression that makes you appreciate what it’s like to watch a talent be overtaken by their gift on live television. In other words, the Emmys felt different and the same, filled with familiar characters as well as shout-outs to shows that some people didn’t even know existed. And while a lot of the major winners were predictable, this year’s awards also reflected the wide spectrum of places to find good television. There was a sense that the voters, as well as the producers, had decided to try some things. [Elaborately dressed](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-red-carpet-2022-photos.html) actors and creators accepted trophies, some of them well deserved (Sheryl Lee Ralph!), some of them less so (a directing award for a Ted Lasso episode instead of that episode of Barry with the motorcycle chase?). These served as reminders that, as much as television is about great storytelling and allowing audiences to feel seen, it’s also being made in an environment where every network and streaming conglomerate is more desperate than ever for money and eyeballs. [A lot of those trophies](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-winners-full-list.html) went to shows that have won before — Ted Lasso, Succession, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (which nabbed Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the seventh consecutive year), and Saturday Night Live (named Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for the sixth year in a row). After a largely virtual ceremony in 2020 and one held half-indoors and half-outdoors because of a rise in COVID-19 cases in 2021, this was the first “normal” Emmy Awards in three years. And it was normal in a lot of ways. Yeah, [the Emmys don’t make sense sometimes](https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/emmy-award-nominations-limited-series-limitations.html).

[Apple’s much-fancied series Severance](https://www.smh.com.au/culture/tv-and-radio/ben-stiller-s-severance-is-a-dystopian-thriller-worth-sticking-with-20220214-p59wan.html) was largely overlooked, collecting just two awards from 14 nominations, both of them in the technical categories – original score and title design – that had been handed out on Sunday. But by far the biggest snub of this year’s Emmys was delivered to Better Call Saul. It collected three of the seven awards for which it was nominated. Australian actor Murray Bartlett, who had been toiling in relative obscurity since moving from his native Perth to Los Angeles in 2000 before The White Lotus turned him into one of Tinseltown’s hottest properties, was a popular winner in the supporting actor category. No matter the platitudes about it being an honour just to be nominated, there are always winners and losers at an awards show.

At last night’s Emmys, Bob Odenkirk, John Turturro, Michael Keaton, Tony Shalhoub—all distinguished actors of a certain age—let us in on their secret: wear the classic suit, but also throw on a pair of sunglasses. Sun is still very much up there in the sky—so opting for sunglasses on the red carpet is also, ultimately, a practical choice. It also felt like the actors were having fun getting all dressed up, too, as evidenced by

When the house band played Lizzo’s song “About Damn Time,” Lizzo was front and center on the dance floor singing along — surely a boost to the ego of the house band’s lead singer. The warm-up MC, comedian Chris Spencer, who shared lots of other advice with the attendees and potential winners about what to do if they won, made a very specific point about any potential stage jumpers: “If any of you have the urge to come up on this stage, just know you will get your ass severely beat,” he told the crowd, adding that there were MMA fighters in disguise in the audience who would swiftly take down any potential stage crashers, famous or not. The upper half of the theater remained in row seating for the rest of us. But there was plenty of action at the 2022 Emmys that didn’t make it onto the broadcast, and Rebecca Ford, Joy Press, Natalie Jarvey and Chris Murphy were at the ceremony and the after-parties to catch it all. But this year, the orchestra part of the Microsoft Theater in Downtown LA was transformed into ballroom seating, with talent at tables that also included food and drink service. Pre-pandemic, the Emmys almost always featured theater-style seating, which put the talent in rows with the rest of the attendees.

2022 Emmys Roundup: The Good, the Bad, and the Bizarre (Paste Magazine)

But his job as DJ for the 2022 Emmys caused this ceremony to be the first time I really noticed the music that plays for the winners. That’s the power of television. That would be so boring compared to seeing two people filming in front of a green screen in Burbank for a day trying to sell one of the stupidest car brands in the world. That’s the power of awards shows. I know him as two things: a DJ and one of those people who welcomes you to Los Angeles over the speakers while you wait for your bags in LAX. The director of the show wisely elected to not show Kimmel while Brunson gave her speech. After a jointly in-person and virtual 2021 ceremony and a completely virtual one in 2020, 2022 saw the return of a proper Emmys. His mini reunion with Kel Mitchell was great, and the sketch with Kumail Nanjiani was legitimately funny (or at least as good as an awards show sketch can be). By the end of the show the poor planning crunch meant that everyone only got a tight 45 seconds, if that. The enforcement of speech time limits was all over the place. At least that was the energy in the air at the 2022 Emmy Awards. The categories were stacked, the Fiji water bottles in plain view, and the room was filled with hundreds of dazzling smiles (save for Bill Hader, the only visible person who wore a mask).
