NFL Week 1 Live Analysis: Joe Burrow Struggles With Four Turnovers (Sports Illustrated)

The first 1 p.m. kickoff of the 2022 season is here. Joe Burrow struggles with turnovers while the Dolphins put on a show for Bill Belichick.

—Albert Breer I think we also forget sometimes that Bill Belichick is still Bill Belichick —Conor Orr Tony Pollard is a talented player who has been underutilized in the waning years of Ezekiel Elliott’s prime as a running back. A lot has changed for both of these teams since Brandon Staley’s decision to call an ill-fated timeout in overtime, yet this one will still be a chance for a talented Chargers team to put that moment behind it. Tyreek Hill is gone to the Dolphins, which means the Chiefs will have to beat teams more strategically. Last year, his brief retirement at age 44 left one head-scratching tidbit unanswered, which is why he pulled the plug a year earlier than planned. [11-day hiatus](https://www.nfl.com/news/tom-brady-absent-from-buccaneers-practice-for-personal-reasons-will-not-return-u), sources say Brady spent the bulk of it in the Bahamas at a private resort with his family, making good on a mid-retirement promise he made to his wife, Gisele, that he would vacation with them in August for the first time in two decades. The only other time Brady entered a season without being under contract for the next season was in 2019, his final year in New England before Brady will earn $30 million this year, including a $15 million payment from the signing bonus of his 2021 contract. That is conceivable. He received a $13.88 million roster bonus the day after he signed a Brady was not disciplined. That is the understanding, that this is the final year. "We're all not sure whether we're going to be here next year or not, that's the reality for every player, every coach, every parent. We should all take advantage of the opportunity that we have." "I think we're all getting one day older at a time," Brady said. It was not a normal training camp, to be sure.

NFL Picks Against the Spread: Week 1 Games (Bleeding Green Nation)

Before the first Sunday of the 2022 NFL regular season kicks off, let's have some fun by taking a look at the spreads for the Week 1 games.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (-2.5) at DALLAS COWBOYS: The Bucs’ interior offensive line is weakened but it’s not like the Cowboys’ defensive interior is loaded. GREEN BAY PACKERS at MINNESOTA VIKINGS (-1.5): The Packers are missing multiple offensive line starters and Allen Lazard. PICK: Chiefs -6.5 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (-6.5) at ARIZONA CARDINALS: The vibes are bad in Arizona. But the G-Men haven’t earned that kind of benefit of the doubt at this stage. Tua Tagovailoa is going to take a step forward now that he has both Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill to work with. PICK: Jaguars +3 CLEVELAND BROWNS at CAROLINA PANTHERS (-1): The Browns stink. The NFC is wide open, sure, but it’s hard to make a convincing case for New Orleans as a No. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (-7) at HOUSTON TEXANS: Can you name a single starter on the Texans’ defense? Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., and Allegiant Stadium for the Las Vegas Raiders all opened in the past five years and have set a new standard for the live N.F.L. Puddles formed everywhere, and players struggled to find their footing pregame and early in the match. The Eagles traded for the former Titans receiver in April and promptly signed him to a four-year, $100 million contract extension that paid off Sunday with dunks all over the Lions’ secondary. Brown hasn’t solved anything as far as Hurts’s hesitancy to throw over the middle, a tendency that showed as Philadelphia eked out a 38-35 win over Detroit. The Steelers bullied the rookie left guard Cordell Volson, who gave up a sack to Cameron Heyward on Cincinnati’s first offensive play, then targeted Volson’s side of the line for Highsmith’s first sack of the day. I’m not starting a GoFundMe for Barkley, but it’s not easy being a running back embarking on a contract year after spending the first four seasons of your career frequently injured and often misused by some, uh, less-than-innovative offensive coaches. Much was made last year of the team’s rededication to the running game that turned the season around, but having Brown raises the team’s ceiling significantly. I don’t want to overreact to one Week 1 win over the Lions, but seeing him fit in so seamlessly was a really encouraging sign of what’s to come.

As the clock went to zeroes, the Bears went for a celebratory slip-and-slide. The Giants scored a touchdown with a minute left and decided to go for two—and got the win in Daboll’s first game. [they replaced the field with Bermuda grass](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34544656/chicago-bears-soldier-field-gets-new-bermuda-grass-surface-installed-just-season-start). [his alarming resemblance to the “two chicks at the same time” guy from Office Space](https://twitter.com/rodger/status/1493000939342643201)—suffered a biceps injury and had to leave the game. A tie is technically half a win in the standings! Adams, for his part, had a solid debut with the Raiders, going for 141 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Chargers. (Yes, I’m dropping in a highlight of a kickoff for a touchback, perhaps the least exciting play in football.) And it stands to reason that when Reid fails to kick a touchback, he gives the Chiefs an advantage, because their coverage unit will feature 11 professional tacklers instead of 10 tacklers and a kicker. It’s been a running joke that the Packers haven’t given Aaron Rodgers the receiving help he needs—and that was when he had Davante Adams, an All-Pro talent who led the league in receiving touchdowns in 2020. I promise to pull back a little from football fandom and see what the rest of the world has to offer. In the haze of RedZone, even the most boring stuff seems like a blessing.

What to know from NFL Week 1: Chiefs are just fine, but Patriots sure ... (The Washington Post)

AFC South teams played the New York Giants, Washington Commanders and each other — and still emerged with zero wins. The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers ...

Rookie Christian Watson, the second-round pick the Packers chose in April, sprinted behind the defense in the first quarter, only for Rodgers’s perfect pass — and a sure touchdown — to fall through his hands. Rodgers had less success in moving on from Davante Adams, who in his Raiders debut caught 10 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Still, Jackson stands to benefit from the principle and backbone he has brought to negotiations. In his first game sans Hill, Mahomes competed 30 of 39 passes for 360 yards and five touchdowns as the Chiefs pasted the host Arizona Cardinals, scoring a league-high 44 points. Joe Burrow erased a 14-point deficit when he darted a touchdown pass to Ja’Marr Chase on the final play from scrimmage in regulation, only for Minkah Fitzpatrick to block the PAT. Josh Allen dispatched any worry that he would have difficulty adjusting without Daboll, the offensive coordinator who became the Giants’ coach (and won his debut with a comeback at Tennessee). Lance is clearly a great talent and gets lauded by teammates for his maturity, but he is not in an environment suited for development. But the 49ers are expected to compete for the Super Bowl, and they just lost to one of the league’s expected bottom dwellers as Lance played poorly. The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers played in a bog. The Cowboys emphasized decreasing penalties, and in their opener they committed 10. The product remains undefeated, and this is what to know. It could get worse: Jones was not available to speak with reporters because of a back injury, the Patriots said.

Judging NFL Week 1 overreactions - Chiefs are better without ... (ESPN Australia)

The Chiefs rolled. The Patriots looked shaky in Miami. Trey Lance was outdueled by Justin Fields. Let's judge Week 1.

[Dak Prescott](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2577417/dak-prescott) looked terrible all night. Two touchdown passes by [Justin Fields](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4362887/justin-fields) (taken eight picks later than [Trey Lance](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4383351/trey-lance) in the 2021 draft) put the Bears in front in the second half, and the Bears salted it away with a [Khalil Herbert](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4035886/khalil-herbert) touchdown run after Lance's fourth-quarter interception. [Tom Brady](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2330/tom-brady) and the Buccaneers went into AT&T Stadium and smothered Dallas, 19-3. [49ers did in a 19-10 loss](/nfl/game/_/gameId/401437647) played in the muck and the mud of rainy Soldier Field. [Patrick Mahomes](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3139477/patrick-mahomes) and the Chiefs' offense looked pretty determined to tamp down the offseason concerns about how they were going to score points without Hill. A lot of that "race" could be decided by the health of Jones and the effectiveness (plus health) of [Carson Wentz](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2573079/carson-wentz)??? They were more dull than disastrous, but the postgame news that [Mac Jones](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4241464/mac-jones) (21-for-30, 213 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT and a lost fumble) injured his back could certainly bring "disastrous" into play. [Josh Allen](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3918298/josh-allen) is going to be the MVP! [Aaron Rodgers](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/8439/aaron-rodgers) really doesn't have anyone to throw to! [Kyler Murray](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3917315/kyler-murray) really does need to study more! I meant [Patrick Mahomes](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3139477/patrick-mahomes).

A handful of top receivers and pass-rushers fared best in their new homes during the first week of the 2022 NFL season.

Those dragged down his overall grade, but he still deserves a lot of credit for logging 313 yards and four touchdowns through the air. Cooper had a nondescript debut for the Browns. Kirk looked like a better fit in the Jaguars' offense than he was in the Cardinals' offense. He showed in his debut with the team that he may be worth the price. Williams was a force in Baltimore's secondary against the Jets; he led the team with 12 tackles and recorded an interception that set up the Ravens' first score of the game. 1 receiver, and that is a big win for the Jaguars. The Texans felt confident about Davis Mills and the rest of their offense and their defense did overachieve vs. The Bears also had to be pleased about their new-look defense under Matt Eberflus. The Saints had to be pleased with Jameis Winston coming back strong from his knee injury to bring the more aggressive passing game to life with Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry. They also had to be thrilled about rookie Cade York being their new centerpiece on special teams. Although his big mistakes and special teams cost them, the biggest concerns should be about an offensive line that was supposed to be much improved. The Steelers didn't look great offensively with Mitchell Trubisky, but they did just enough the passing game to steal the Bengals game to reward the takeaway-amassing defense. The 49ers were shorthanded around Trey Lance in the slop of Chicago and couldn't find their usual footing in the running and passing games. The Ravens didn't have their running game working with Lamar Jackson and without J.K. The Chargers showed off their new-look defense well against the Raiders, with Khalil Mack on the revenge attack, even without new shutdown corner J.C. The Bills showed how fully loaded they are offensively around MVP favorite Josh Allen and defensively around newcomer Von Miller in dominating the Rams after getting out of their own giveaway ways.

Notable bets - The curious betting interest on Trey Lance NFL ... (ESPN Australia)

Money poured in on Trey Lance leading up to the 49ers' Week 1 game against the Bears.

Caesars Sportsbook reported taking a pair of "six-figure" bets on Friday on the Chiefs at -6 and -6.5. Cain said fans started to filter out as kickoff of the Chiefs-Cardinals game got closer, but early in the day, it was bustling. In just the past four years, the NFL has gone from distancing itself as much as possible from gambling to now having sportsbooks in stadiums and running across the ticket on the league's cable network. Green Bay had been a 1.5-point favorite for months, but enough money came in on the Vikings on Saturday and Sunday morning to drive the line all the way to Minnesota -2 at some books. On Saturday morning, more money had been bet on the Alabama-Texas first-half spread than 32 of 45 full-game spreads at Caesars Sportsbook. The public was on the Vikings, too. It was the worst decision on Sunday for multiple sportsbooks. Savvy bettors live to capitalize on market discrepancies and aren't afraid to bet both sides of a prop at different sportsbooks for a chance at hitting the middle and winning both wagers. The line shot up to as high as Chiefs -6.5, before closing at a consensus -6. Lance finished with 54 rushing yards in the 49ers' 19-10 loss to the Bears -- one of four outright upsets by underdogs on a big opening Sunday for bookmakers. Out of the dozens of season-long player props Caesars offered, more money was bet on the over on Lance's rushing yards than any other prop, causing the line to grow from 475.5 to 625.5. Some of the offseason betting interest in Lance stems from the odds.

How bad were NFL kickers in Week 1? Misses pile up as they ... (Sporting News)

It was an opening weekend to forget for NFL kickers. There were blocked kicks, shanked attempts and more over the course of Sunday's 14-game slate.

The sides took part in a wildly entertaining contest to start the 2022 season. One thing is for certain, though: it wasn't the best day to be an NFL kicker Sunday. The Titans, meanwhile, had hopes for a deep run in the playoffs. But Randy Bullock pulled his 47-yard attempt wide left, giving the Giants a shocking Week 1 dub. Riley Patterson clanked the upright with a kick as the first half came to a close. Those three points could have made a big difference, especially after Jacksonville overcame a 14-3 deficit to build an eight-point edge with 11:45 left in the fourth. With the Falcons trailing 27-26 in the final seconds, Koo lined up for a 63-yard field goal. Koo was, for the most part, Atlanta's offense Sunday. Blankenship's kick sailed wide right from 42 yards, relegating NFL fans to the most anti-climactic result possible: a 20-20 tie. It was the first time McPherson had ever missed a kick inside 30 yards. After Joe Burrow capped an impressive last-minute drive with a touchdown pass to Ja'Marr Chase with two seconds remaining, the Bengals were on the brink of a momentous Week 1 comeback. The kicking drama would continue in overtime.

NFL winners and losers: Are the Vikings for real? (SB Nation)

What the hell was that? When it comes to the first week of the 2022 NFL season we really got it all. A 20-20 draw, sad Bill Belichick, game-deciding referee ...

If the play was ruled correctly it would have resulted in a loss of down, the Browns being pushed back 10 yards, and a 10 second runoff. I don’t know how protections around the league are going to account for Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa AND players like Derwin James in the secondary who can blitz you out of your boots. In order to stop the clock with a spike the quarterback has to: This is special because it really takes skill to field an atrocious high snap and manage to rotate the ball into the absolutely worst position possible for a right footed kicker. This came with 1:13 left on the clock, the Browns were out of timeouts. Joe Burrow looked like a shadow of himself, the Bengals’ line couldn’t block to save their life, and everything was falling apart — but somehow, some way, they managed to put together an overtime drive that gave them a potential win on the back of a 29-yard field goal from one of the league’s most automatic clutch kickers. Instead the foot was taken all the way off the pedal, and instead the Vikings aimed to coast in for the W, rather than shut the door. Teams will bracket him, effectively double him, and force Kirk Cousins to find more options in the passing game — and I just don’t know if this team has the firepower past JJ in the passing game. It gave off a really familiar feeling in the 3rd quarter that they were leaving this door far too open, for far too long. A 20-20 draw, sad Bill Belichick, game-deciding referee decisions, a laces-in field goal that decided a game, and a sloppy Soldier Field that turned a battle in the trenches to a literal battle in the trenches, like it was something out of World War I. The Packers looked like absolute ass, but they looked like ass in Week 1 of 2021 too — remember, that’s when they were blown out 38-3 by the Saints in a game where Jameis Winston threw five touchdowns and looked absolutely indestructible. There are a lot of games which deserve a deeper dive this week, but none that had the stakes of
