The royal family has carefully choreographed the next 10 days to bring the Queen's body back to England for her state funeral at Westminster Abbey.

At 11am on Monday, September 19, the Queen's body will be taken from the Palace of Westminster to Westminster Abbey for the state funeral. The Queen's body will lie in state in Westminster Hall — where members of the public will be able to visit — for four days until the morning of the state funeral. From Northolt, the coffin will be driven to Buckingham Palace to rest in the Bow Room. King Charles III and members of the royal family will take part in the procession, as well as a service at St Giles' to receive the coffin. On Monday afternoon a procession will take the Queen's coffin from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles' Cathedral. The Queen's coffin is currently being driven to Edinburgh, and will be placed in the throne room of the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Queen Elizabeth II's coffin left Balmoral Castle on Sunday for a long, slow journey back to London, via the Scottish capital.

US President Joe Biden said he would be there, although full details of the event and the attendees have not yet been released. Upon inheriting the throne following the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6, 1952, it became her official residence in Scotland. It is now the official residence of Charles, who became King immediately after his mother’s death. “I suppose like everybody else, just lots of emotions.” The cortege from Balmoral is the first of a series of events leading up to the state funeral at Westminster Abbey in London on September 19. Sombre crowds lined the roads to pay their respects as the oak coffin, covered with the royal standard of Scotland and a wreath of flowers, was taken through Aberdeen and Dundee.
