The first trailer for Assassin's Creed: Mirage introduces award-winning actress Shohreh Aghdashloo as Roshan, Basim's mentor.
While it wasn't said specifically, the game going back to an action-adventure game could mean that the RPG elements that have been present in the last three entries of the series, Assassin's Creed Origins, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and the aforementioned Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which have been a divisive addition to fans of the series, could be getting toned back. There were also updates on Assassin's Creed Infinity, which will be a hub for the historical fiction series in the future. As he learns their mysterious rituals and powerful tenets, he will hone his unique abilities, discover his true nature, and come to understand a new Creed – one that will change his fate in ways he never could have imagined. The story is linear and will be far smaller in scope than Valhalla and the recent open world iterations. There are all new assassination and parkour animations to look forward to, the corner swing is back and you can use a pole vault to leap over gaps in buildings. As is pretty common in Assassin's Creed, many historical and political figures will feature in the game, though none have been revealed yet. During a Game Rant interview, Assassin's Creed Mirage creative director Stephane Boudon reveals why it doesn't have playable present-day segments.
No, we decided to not put in any present-day or future playable missions in Assassin's Creed Mirage because we wanted to really focus on the story of Basim when he was in Baghdad in the Ninth Century. Whatever side of the fence someone is on with that issue, one game without it certainly isn't a big change when the main gameplay pillars of parkour, stealth, and assassinations return. And while this is a return to form for the franchise, it's not likely many fans will be particularly upset by this. Assassin's Creed Mirage is launching at some point next year in 2023, Beaulieu says, although the narrative director didn't reveal which platforms the new game would be coming to. Like the original games, there will be stretches of linear mission chains, and then segments where you will be able to choose from a number of different available quests. Ubisoft says you can also expect the return of some classic parkour moves, including the corner swing, and for the pace of freerunning to be faster than in the older games. It is designed to be a modern take on the original gameplay template for the earlier Assassin's Creed games, with developer Ubisoft Bordeaux using the same three design pillars as the original game: stealth, parkour, and assassinations. Not many details were given, but it was said that they provide "opportunities to define the means and path to take down the next target." Much like the early entries in the series, this is a city-set game, and Baghdad is split into four different districts.

Players begin as a street thief, go on their journey as an Assassin, and climb the ranks to Master, but it seems that the two will not always see eye to eye. And she will help him find the answer to his issues, his problems. In the game, they are based in Alamut and this era is just before The Hidden Ones transition into the Assassins.
Ahead of Ubisoft Forward we were given a sneak peek at Assassin's Creed Mirage from Ubisoft Bordeaux where we learnt more about the game.
- While Baghdad is a dense and fully explorable sandbox, the game’s story is very much a linear affair. He is also described as one of the most agile and capable Assassins in the franchise’s history. Level design reflects this in how players can use the environment to remain hidden while being able to more accurately track who is paying attention to you or even looking for you will help in how stealth has been expanded upon. - As part of the expanded level design, classic parkour moves such as the corner swing return, though with newer tech and animations driving them. Different people of varying backgrounds and cultures made up the lifeblood of the city, and in Mirage this setting comes to life in the year 861 -- 20 years before the events of Valhalla. This means elements of design from Assassin’s Creed One will take place here, but will be managed and handed to the player differently. - The Baghdad we play through in the game is a very dense city, inspired by the historical, cosmopolitan Baghdad of the Golden Age. - Alamut from the first game will feature, though it is under construction. This is now confirmed to be the case with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a throwback stealth-oriented, linear narrative set in Baghdad some 20 years before Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. There will also be something dark lurking in the ‘after’ where each assassin has conversed with their respective targets. Your bird companion will be an eagle and will have more functionality in various aspects of gameplay; more so than any previous feathered friends. This is the full Assassin’s Creed treatment, but inspired by the series’ origins imagined as if it were made today.

We asked a bunch about how the game takes the series back to its roots which you can Technically no modern day segments in Mirage do make sense given what we know about how Valhalla ended and Basim’s story resolution in that game, but given there is an “entering the animus” moment it will be interesting to see what that means in the context of the game. When asked if we’ll see any modern day sections in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Beaulieu said: “So I can tell you that even though you’re going to have a clear entering the Animus moment at the beginning of Mirage, there is no present day at all”.

Assassin's Creed Mirage creative director Stephane Boudon speaks to how AC1, the Ezio trilogy, Unity, and the modern RPGs influence the upcoming game.
[Assassin's Creed Mirage is set between Origins and Valhalla](https://gamerant.com/assassins-creed-chronological-order-how-play-odyssey-first-last/), but still incredibly close to the time period of AC1. No, in every way, Bordeaux sought to take what made the classic action-adventure games great and modernize them in a way for a proper 2023 title. Compared to the triple-ended sprawl of Valhalla's storyline, Assassin's Creed Mirage is instead a "tightly-crafted narrative-driven" adventure. Obviously, graphically the last few Assassin's Creed titles have set a high bar, but what tweaks will Ubisoft make to make a classic formula feel modern? [Ubisoft Forward 2022](https://www.gamesradar.com/everything-announced-ubisoft-forward-2022-assassins-creed-showcase/). It's almost a complete deviation away from the direction of the last three Assassin's Creed titles. We're joining the story of the returning character some 20 years before the events of Valhalla, to see how he goes from street thief to master assassin. At this point, Assassin's Creed as a series is at risk of developing open-world fatigue. [Assassin's Creed Odyssey](https://www.gamesradar.com/assassins-creed-odyssey-guide/), which was followed by Assassin's Creed Valhalla and its epic Viking tale in 2020. With Assassin's Creed Mirage promising more nuanced detection so you can see exactly who's chasing you down, there's plenty of scope for this to be seriously satisfying. Each assassination will be a black box mission, allowing you to have some freedom as to how you take down your target, but I'm excited to have a tighter focus for each level. Its 2023 launch is perfect timing – both in terms of celebrating the series' 15th anniversary and acting as an intake of breath before the inevitably vast worlds of [Assassin's Creed Mirage](https://www.gamesradar.com/assassins-creed-mirage-guide/). After [Assassin's Creed Origins](https://www.gamesradar.com/assassins-creed-origins-review/) took the classic series' formula and applied it to a vast open-world scale and RPG mechanics back in 2017, we've had almost five years of huge Assassin's Creed titles.
Making it the first-ever Ubisoft game to get an Adults Only rating.
Due to recent changes to the ESRB guidelines, lootboxes are considered a form of gambling since they don't tell the player what they might be buying. Considering some stores won't stock games that are Adult Only, it's incredibly unlikely that Ubisoft allows Assassin's Creed Mirage to keep whatever real-world gambling it has. [only 33 games that have been given an AO rating between 1993 and 2018](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AO-rated_video_games), including the likes of Manhunt, Outlast 2, and Agony. For now, we still don't have a specific idea of when Assassin's Creed Mirage will be launching as Ubisoft has only committed to a broad 2023 window. [Ubisoft Forward](https://gamerant.com/ubisoft-forward-assassins-creed-mario-rabbids-skull-bones-updates/) showed an AO Rating at the start of the show, but that could be based on any of the live-service games shown there. [Mario and Rabbids: Sparks of Hope](https://gamerant.com/mario-rabbids-sparks-of-hope-rayman-dlc-ubisoft-connect-future-game-potential/), for example, would go nowhere near an AO Rating--Nintendo wouldn't let that fly. [Assassin's Creed Mirage](https://gamerant.com/tag/assassins-creed-mirage/) could get stuck with such a rating, but that's because of a relatively recent rating: Real Gambling. [ESRB](https://gamerant.com/crisis-core-final-fantasy-7-reunion-rated-esrb/), only 27 games have ever received an AO rating, and most companies will do everything they can to get rid of such a label. Several retailers, like Amazon, show a Rating Pending sign for Assassin's Creed Mirage, and this makes sense. The Microsoft Store and other digital markets are listing Assassin's Creed Mirage with an AO, or Adult-Only, rating, but this is unlikely to stick for the release.
