North Queensland beats Cronulla 32-30 to book NRL preliminary ... (ABC News)

A long-range Valentine Holmes field goal in golden-point extra time sees North Queensland edge Cronulla 32-30, while Canberra lives to fight another day ...

And then Asofa-Solomona's effort put the home side ahead but it was short-lived with the Raiders finishing with a flourish to send the Storm packing. Coates planted the ball across the line for his third try four minutes into the second half after a break by Marion Seve for the Storm to only trail by two points. Two tries to Coates put his side ahead 8-4 but the Raiders crossed twice in the final nine minutes of the half to take an eight-point lead into the break. The Raiders repelled a Storm fight-back in the second half to oust the perennial finals heavyweights and march on to a semi-final showdown against Parramatta in Sydney next weekend. His kick set up Tom Gilbert for the opening try of the night with Peta Hiku and Tom Dearden also scoring to help the Cowboys get away to a fast start. The winner of the semifinal between Parramatta and Canberra is the only hurdle remaining between them and a place in the grand final.

Hynes answers key question in masterclass... but flyer fails to fire ... (Fox Sports)

Despite the Sharks' golden point loss, Cronulla fans were treated to a playmaking masterclass from pairing Nicho Hynes and Matt Moylan.

Was on the end of a smart play from Hynes and Moylan to score. Flew onto a Nicho Hynes pass and was clinical to find Kennedy on the inside for the Sharks’ third try. Went on to have a strong performance and did his job well. Had the chance to hand his side the lead on the stroke of halftime and lost the ball, otherwise didn’t feature in the first half. Lost the ball in crucial field position in extra time but was overall solid, going about his business silently. Although, the veteran still made 39 tackles and recorded 103 running metres. Tough display which is to be expected from the Cronulla utility. Consistently threatened and delivered a near perfect performance with 233 running metres, nine tackle breaks and two line breaks. Was under par by his usual standards but was impacted by the Sharks consistently attacking on the left side. A very strong performance. Early mistake which proved costly, but made up for it with a number of bustling runs. Was otherwise reliable and cleaned up some smart kicking from Chad Townsend.

Holmes the hero as Cowboys beat Sharks in golden point epic (NRL.COM)

The Cowboys progressed to their first preliminary final since 2017 with a 32-30 win over the Sharks in a golden point thriller at PointsBet Stadium on ...

The Cowboys are now just one win away from a grand final and will enjoy a week off before hosting a preliminary final in Townsville. the thing that probably disappoints us the most is we scored 30 points and the way we defended throughout the season we would probably get that done nine times out of 10 so we have a simple focus in front of us, we’re back to work tomorrow and get prepared for next week." Val had a carry in that same set in our own half and he got up and said to the boys as he got up and played the ball and they were running off he said 'I'm taking a shot' and that's what happened and he was dialled in and he delivered." We earned a second crack so the disappointment is here right now but we’re on again next week so we just have to dust it off… Nicho Hynes entered the finals series with 17 try assists for the season and he needed just 25 minutes to notch No.18 when he put Siosifa Talakai into a gaping hole to score the Sharks' second of the night. What’s done is done now, we just have to wash it and move on.

"I think because Val Holmes was between him and the ball ... READ MORE: "A bit of a tough one there." "So I think he was just banking on Val getting the ball in his hands and trying to knock it free or even trying to hold him up. he was sort of blinded of when Val Holmes was going to take control of that football," Smith said. "The fact is he goes into Valentine Holmes and uses his body to push him." "The ref and the Bunker are put in a very tough situation there. "Connor Tracey did his best to actually look like he was going for the ball, and he was getting his arm around Valentine Holmes," Fittler said. "I felt like he was going a bit both ways. "It'd be interesting if you actually sat him down and asked him what he was actually doing. "Shoulder to shoulder and you get sin-binned for that. Valentine Holmes the hero as Cowboys hunt down Sharks to win ... (The Guardian)

North Queensland beat Cronulla 31-30 in extra-time to send the Cowboys through to the preliminary final.

The thing that probably disappoints us the most is we scored 30 points and the way we defended throughout the season we would probably get that done nine times out of 10. Cowboys winger Murray Taulagi scored the first try after the break but Holmes was unable to add the extras from the touchline. But then the game took a twist. The win guarantees the Cowboys will host a preliminary final in Townsville for the first time. Hynes was faultless from the tee converting tries from Toby Rudolf, Siosifa Talakai and Will Kennedy. Chad Townsend was key to the Cowboys’ fortunes as he returned to play his former club for the first time since leaving for Townsville last year.

2022 NRL Week 1 Finals, Sharks 30 Cowboys 32 – Report (NothingButLeague)

Lachlan Jeffery reviews the extra time epic qualifying final between the Cowboys and the Sharks. MATCHDAY RESULTS. SCOREBOARD. Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 30

Time ultimately ran out, sending the two teams to sudden-death golden point. Finally, after 92 and a half minutes, Valentine Holmes stepped up from 45 metres out, nailing the field goal to take the win 32-30, giving the Cowboys a week off to prepare for a home preliminary final against the winner of Parramatta versus Canberra, while the Sharks prepare for the semi-final next Saturday against the winner of Roosters versus Souths. A successful captain’s challenge gave the Cowboys attacking field position, before a knock down by the Sharks gave them a final set in the last minute, with Taumalolo crashing through and keeping his arm off the ground to score the equaliser with 20 seconds left, sending the game to extra time. A charge down from an attempted field goal by Hynes gave the Sharks a chance to score again on the siren, however Connor Tracey was unable to ground the ball off a second kick, leaving the teams locked 18-all at the break. In contrast to the attack-heavy first half, the second began as a defensive slog with the Cowboys coming close off a kick in the 51st minute, only to be denied due to a bobble by Coen Hess. Valentine Holmes turned the heartbreaker at his old home ground, kicking a 45-metre field goal in the 93rd minute of play to give the Cowboys a week off and put the Sharks into a sudden-death semi-final.
