Queens birthday public holiday: Will Australia still celebrate the June ... (7NEWS.com.au)

Australians are mourning a monarch we have known - and celebrated - for 70 years.

In QLD, it is usually celebrated in early October. The holiday will now likely be referred to as the King’s birthday public holiday but continue to be celebrated in June. In 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip declared a holiday to celebrate the birthday of King George III on June 4. Despite the majority of Australia celebrating the Queen’s birthday in June, she was actually born on April 21, 1926. In WA, that June weekend is taken up by the Western Australia Day public holiday so the Queen’s birthday holiday is usually celebrated in late September. Australia - other than Western Australia and Queensland - celebrates the Queen’s birthday on the second Monday in June.

As for the legal underpinning of the public holiday in Australia: the Queen’s Birthday public holiday is considered a national public holiday under the [Politico](https://www.politico.eu/article/queen-elizabeth-death-plan-britain-operation-london-bridge/) last year, the Queen’s death is likely to result in a British state funeral ten days after her death. However, beyond a name change, it seems the long-held Queen’s Birthday public holiday is likely to stay in place. A long-rehearsed plan of succession is now in effect, and Australia can expect changes to its currency, passports, and stamps to reflect the reign of the new King once he is coronated. And plans for a national day of mourning may not result in a public holiday shuttering businesses nationwide, according to The history of the Queen’s Birthday public holiday suggests most Australians can still expect a day off in early June, even if the celebration experiences a name change after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

What is likely, though, is that certain Commonwealth nations, Australia included, may now look to leave the monarchy and establish republics instead. Yet it seems unlikely to change date, nor to change its name to the King’s Birthday now that Charles is the ruling monarch. [The West Australian](https://id.thewest.com.au/interaction/trHi9OEBYkI__3du5IPu8) say that while Commonwealth countries will observe 10 days of mourning and remembrance, in Australia, there will be no official mourning period. While Queen Elizabeth II’s actual birthday is April 21, the Queen’s Birthday is celebrated on differing days by many Commonwealth countries. This morning, Friday, September 9, PM [Anthony Albanese](https://thelatch.com.au/anthony-albanese-press-club-speech/) confirmed he’ll be travelling to London within the next few days to attend her funeral and meet King Charles III. Ten to 12 notable Australians will also accompany them.

While it looks unlikely that a national holiday will be announced in Australia for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, there may be a day off to mark the coronation of her successor, His Majesty King Charles III. Though the day itself, which is yet to be officially announced, will be an official ‘day of mourning’, there are no specific orders that a national holiday should also be announced. So, will there be a day of national mourning in Australia?

King Charles is expected to deliver a speech to parliament in Westminster on Monday after the proclamation and his formal accession. Parliament had been due to return on Monday for four days, followed by a five-week break. Once in London, Albanese is expected to have a brief audience with the King. A national memorial service will bring political, legal, military and community leaders together in Canberra to mark the Queen’s passing at the end of the observance but there is no decision yet on whether the day of mourning will be a public holiday. “That example of selfless service, devotion to duty and compassion for others is both an enduring legacy and a gift to us all,” he said in an address to the nation on Friday night. Australia will hold a national day of mourning to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth as part of a 14-day observance that will see parliament suspended and ministers called to a special meeting on Sunday to proclaim King Charles the new sovereign.

What is the future of Queen's Birthday public holiday in Australia and ... (SBS)

SBS News has contacted the office of WA Premier Mark McGowan for comment. BBC announces the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"There will be a change in the terminology. "The public holiday will go ahead as usual. "I think it'll be a summertime day to suit the weather and I think similarly the states in Australia will also choose dates that suit themselves." "The holiday is celebrated in the summertime because it suits people in the UK to have a public holiday in the summer rather than the winter." "I think in due course it'll be renamed to King's Birthday public holiday," Dr McCreery said, adding the death of Queen Elizabeth may not, however, have an impact on the dates the public holiday is observed in Australia and in other countries around the world. She said the death of Queen Elizabeth II will also have an impact on the nomenclature of the public holiday in other states and territories in Australia, where it is celebrated in June.
