“You have to have a song about me!” she shared per Joe Daly at the time. So I thought, ‘Why don’t I just call the song ‘Middle Child’?’” “I was like, ‘Well, I don’t know,'” Taylor recalled. When I was 25, I never thought, ‘I’m going to be a suburban dad someday.’ But that’s what I am, so I can’t write about being young and going to clubs, and I’m not very political. “If you’re gonna write a song about me, it’s gotta sound like Metallica! “Because it has a lot to do with being a 47-year-old man with a family who never thought he would be in that position.

"I know you can hear this, I know you can feel this. His energy and positivity and passion for life were on display every time Foo Fighters took to the stage. "Taylor I know you're watching," said Ulrich from the stage. Sir Paul was a surprise addition to the line-up - giving a full-throttle rendition of The Beatles classic Helter Skelter, and duetting with Chrissie Hynde on Oh! "He knew more about music than anyone I'd ever met in my life." It was a family affair through and through.

Today's six-hour show balanced the exuberance of a rock extravaganza with the raw human emotion of loss. Music is the connective tissue of life.
The Foo Fighters’ song These Days foretells what lies before all of us. Even Metallica’s Lars Ulrich played on a stomping two song medley of AC/DC hits with the band’s Brian Johnson on vocals. It was an astonishing mix of talent representing a subset of the people who had jammed with Hawkins and the Foos over the past 25 years. Immediately after learning of Hawkins’ demise, The Foo Fighters canceled their entire calendar of shows for 2022. The highlight was always whenever we could attend a Foo Fighters show. Perhaps the most significant relationship of my adult life developed through a common love of live performance.
Paul McCartney, Brian May, Dave Chappelle, the Foo Fighters, and many more came together to pay tribute to Hawkins today.
That included Josh Freese, Travis Barker, Rufus Taylor, and, yes, Bushell, who powered mightily through a version of the band’s “Learn To Fly.” It was, to put not-too-fine a point on it, a massive and star-studded affair: In addition to Dave Grohl and the other members of the Foo Fighters—playing together publicly for the first time since Hawkins’ death—the setlist also included appearances from Dave Chappelle, Josh Homme, John Paul Jones, Liam Gallagher, Kesha, Nile Rodgers, The Pretenders, Krist Novoselic, Lars Ulrich, Roger Taylor, Brian May, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Brian Johnson, Stewart Copeland, Nandi Bushell, Paul McCartney, and more. The most emotional moments of the night, not surprisingly, came from the set by the Foo Fighters themselves, who brought in a rotating set of drummers to pay tribute to Hawkins.

It’s a tough thing to do, especially at 16, he was incredible.” And he needs to be here tonight with all of us, and I think it makes sense that he’s going to come up and play with us tonight.” Sixteen-year-old Oliver Shane Hawkins joined his father’s band for a powerful rendition of Foo Fighters song “My Hero.” So this collection of friends and family and musicians, this is all brought together by him and we’re all connected here today by that one guy.”
An eclectic lineup of musicians makes this a curious bombardment of music – but Dave Grohl, his voice cracking with emotion, is the real star of the show.

He was flanked by his son Rufus and Foo Fighters backing vocalist Barbara Gruska before leaving the kit to take the lead vocal on I’m In Love With my Car. As Copeland took to the stage, Grohl asked, ‘Ready, Stew’ and Copeland responded by banging out quarter notes on his snare. Our favourite of the two songs though, was Monkey Wrench, which played at album tempo saw Travis in his pop-punk comfort zone, powerfully rattling through the songs fills and pauses before bringing some of his trademark showmanship courtesy of a short solo complete with flailing arms and spinning sticks, all while making it seem effortless. When Taylor Hawkins first joined Foo Fighters, he and Grohl were constantly answering questions comparing their styles - a routine answer became that Grohl took influence from John Bonham, while Taylor’s style was more along the lines of Stewart Copeland. “When I was 10 years old, my older sister took me to see Queen in concert - the first concert I ever saw” and interview clip with Taylor said, “And I watched the fucking drummer, and I said ‘I want to fucking be him, I want to do that.” Not only was Roger Taylor a close friend of Hawkins, but Taylor was a Queen obsessive, clearly studying Freddie Mercury’s delivery as a frontman and applying it to his own stage presence when it came time for him to take the mic in front of big audiences. Rufus has featured on Foo Fighters performances before, but here, The Darkness drummer excelled a number of times throughout the set. As Grohl noted before introducing her, UK multi-instrumentalist Nandi Bushell cemented her place in the Foo Fighters universe by challenging Grohl to a drum off. But despite all of this, our favourite Omar turn of the evening was on a Foo Fighters song. After smashing his way through Back In Black while the crowd audibly erupted, Lars swapped out his busted snare drum and continued to steamroll his way through Let There Be Rock. Grohl proved time and again why he is not only considered the Nicest Man In Rock, but also the most influential drummer of his generation. My Hero was recorded for Foo Fighters’ pre-Hawkins second album, The Color and The Shape, and famously features a double-drum part recorded by Dave Grohl.
