F1 Dutch Grand Prix picks, preview, odds: Dominant Max ... (The Athletic)

Max Verstappen is heavily favored entering his home grand prix. Orange-clad fans are expected to cover the stands at the Dutch Grand Prix.

He’ll win in front of his home fans this week and at this point should be the favorite for every race in the remainder of the season. Verstappen is the best driver, has the best car and races for a team that doesn’t make mistakes. And now the concerns that hovered over the team for much of the first half have returned and a second half that once held promise looks anything but. It might not be as thrilling as a close title fight, but the race for second is better than nothing. Ferrari has been disappointing, but overall the team has still made massive progress from where it was a year ago. But clearly, this new car has been a disaster by Mercedes standards and the team still can’t get a grasp on it – even when it thinks gains have been made. Mercedes was disappointing in qualifying in Belgium and Hamilton didn’t make it out of the first lap. Bianchi: The passion exhibited by Dutch fans is a good thing (as long as no lines are crossed, which hasn’t always been the case) and it’s what turns races that may not otherwise be all that anticipated into something much more significant. There may not be much drama surrounding F1’s championship, but Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi, The Athletic’s motorsports reporters, discussed what is worth watching the rest of the season. Now, F1 moves a bit northwest to Verstappen’s native country and even more of the crowd will be there to cheer on Verstappen. There are multiple banked turns, especially in the early part of the lap, and sweeping elevation changes reminiscent of sand dunes. Circuit Zandvoort on the North Sea coast has hosted every version of the Dutch Grand Prix, dating back to 1952.

Max Verstappen can beat Sebastian Vettel's 9-year-old F1 streak from 2013, where the German won nine races in a row with Red Bull.

Even if all the luck comes to Ferrari, it’s hard to see Verstappen losing this title. With over eight more races in 2022, Verstappen can beat Sebastian Vettel’s one of the most illustrious records. The German duo holds this record, but Vettel only needs five more wins out of eight to beat that, and as per his form, it’s pretty achievable. And over 93 points lead his own teammate Sergio Perez. It would be something extraordinary. In 2013, when Vettel was with Red Bull and dominated the whole grid, he won nine races in a row.

Fuel for Thought: Verstappen Chats About Dutch GP, Favorite ... (Sports Illustrated)

In the latest edition of Fuel for Thought, the Dutchman discusses racing at home as a world champion, his take on the age-old pet debate and much more.

Like before I wanted to try to become a world champion, but I never said like I need to do it then and then that year or whatever. I think of course dogs are maybe a little bit more close to you in terms of they really come to you and they really appreciate that you’re around. Sometimes I appreciate watching a series but then sometimes it’s nice to watch a movie so probably different times of the year. I prepared, and of course, I learned a lot more about myself in terms of how you are going to be professional over the years. I always said, ‘We will see.’ That was my approach to a lot of things—we will see—because that takes a lot of the pressure away. Well, I would say the boy likes to be a little bit more on his own. MV: We still have quite a bit of things to do for the team, like to the Paddock Club. Besides that, I also like the strategy meetings with the team because then you know how the race is going to look like but what you are going to do [with] tires and stuff. I think it’s not good to be both like to be either one; you have to find a middle way. You get ready to get out there and collect the points. But it’s good also to be around people so you have to find a balance. I don’t say that you always take the right decision from now onwards, but you always try to at least take the right decisions.

Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has joined McLaren (Beyond the Flag)

Max Verstappen has joined Bruce McLaren on the short list of drivers to win two consecutive Formula 1 races from 10th place or lower on the grid.

He started the 1959 season-ending United States Grand Prix at Sebring International Raceway in 10th place, and he started the 1960 season-opening Grand Prix of Argentina at Autodromo Oscar Alfredo Galvez in 13th. Verstappen’s drive to the front from 14th place also matches seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton’s worst winning grid position, which is tied for ninth on the all-time list. By lap 12 of Sunday’s 44-lap race around the 19-turn, 4.352-mile (7.004-kilometer) Stavelot, Belgium road course, he had worked his way up to the lead. The only other driver to pull off this feat? So Verstappen has joined McLaren on this exclusive list, and of the two, he is the only one to pull it off in the same season. Verstappen entered the summer break fresh off a Hungarian Grand Prix victory which came after he had started in 10th place at the Hungaroring due to a technical issue in Q3.

Max Verstappen chases home win to leave Red Bull in league of ... (The Guardian)

Another victory for the Dutchman, on a very different track to Spa, could short-circuit the title race.

If Max takes an easy one this weekend they will be ahead for a while, because you have seen the two opposites of tracks.” They know he is on a roll, marching to his second title, and they want to party, but for the Dutchman his performance will be of greatest import in just how emphatically he might wrap up the championship. Intriguingly, Mercedes have once more found their form as the mercurial performance of their car continues to bewilder the team and their drivers, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, alike.
