Why are Man United paying so much for Antony? Ajax star's €100 ... (Sporting News)

Manchester United dishing out a gargantuan €100 million for Ajax winger Antony proves that not all massive transfer fees are directly comparable.

For a club already in massive debt thanks to the Glazer ownership, having just spent big money to acquire Casemiro from Real Madrid, this kind of deal comes with considerable downside. Is Antony guaranteed to be a success at Manchester United simply because they paid lots of money for him? It's likely that had United not been interested, and another club with less financial flexibility were in talks, Ajax would negotiate within the interested club's means if they were indeed motivated to make a sale. While Antony was always one of manager Ten Hag's long-term targets, their decision to pursue a deal so late in the window meant they were forced to capitulate to Ajax's demands. Piggybacking on the club's need to bring in attacking talent, the Glazer family's approval rating among Manchester United fans is near the floor. This was directly followed by a massive increase in transfer market activity, with Casemiro acquired the very same day as protests rang outside Old Trafford, and Antony's capture comes just a week later. If the Dutch side didn't receive a bid worthy of their attention, they could keep Antony at the club with little long-term harm, and plenty of time still left to negotiate a satisfactory transfer fee at a later date. The Red Devils were left floundering for a host of players in the summer transfer window, missing out on key targets such as Frenkie de Jong, Christopher Nkunku, and many others linked in the press. One key to determining a player's transfer fee is his contract with the selling club. As this desperation grew, Man United lost negotiating leverage as Ajax could see how much the club needed to bring in reinforcements to improve the side. Those answers will come at a later date, but the following information can at least provide immediate clarity as to why Man United felt it worth capitulating to Ajax's demands. The Premier League club, desperate for a revival under Erik ten Hag, are in rebuild mode.

Leicester City v Manchester United: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Will the Foxes escape the bottom of the table or can United continue their recent improvement? Join Rob Smyth.

A high-profile win against an improving but still eminently beatable Manchester United would reduce the noise and lift Leicester off the bottom of the table. At his best, he’s fine – I thought he was player of the match in the Europa League final, for example. They have had vile luck with injuries over the last couple of years, and their net spend since Rodgers took over in 2019 is among the lowest in the league. A year ago, Brendan Rodgers was the same odds as Erik ten Hag to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager. I know he’s not the best player in the world, I know he occasionally behaves like a 25-year-old, but I bloody love James Maddison. Eventually the ball was fed into Eriksen, who dummied to go across goal and then dragged a shot past the near post. 13 min “Rob,” says Rod Wooden, “never mind about Ronaldo being on the bench against Norwich, he would probably be only a substitute for Norwich at the moment. A transfer request when he was left out at home to Norwich? “I imagine he was a bit surprised that Champions League clubs were not lining up to get him.” Dalot collected a Leicester goalkick and flipped the ball down the right to Fernandes. 18 min Maddison is starting to impose his personality on the game. I’m sorry but it is really getting on my nerves and not so much the decisions but time which just shows incompetence.”

Talking points from the East Midlands (Manchester United)

A second 1-0 win on the road in the space of five days elevated Manchester United to fifth in the Premier League table, after five games.

It’s now three wins in a row in the league for the Reds: the first time since December 2021 that’s happened and the first time in a year that we’ve managed back-to-back top-flight away victories. After a soporific first 45 minutes in the home terraces, that one certainly helped perk up Foxes fans and the home side then grew into the game. Our no.14 is a constant option in possession and a career playing as a no.10 means he has the ability to receive the ball on the half-turn and pick out a wide range of passes. The Leicester no.9 may be 35 years old now, but he can still cause problems with his pace and had scored in this fixture four times previously. An early contender for our next Goal of the Month prize? Unfortunately, they weren’t registered in time to face the Foxes but shortly after kick-off they shared posts on social media watching BT Sport’s coverage of the game from home.

Leicester vs Man Utd player ratings: Sancho reborn under Ten Hag ... (iNews)

Soccer Football - Premier League - Leicester City v Manchester United - King Power Stadium, Jadon Sancho scored what proved to be the winner for Man Utd (Photo: ...

6/10. Cristiano Ronaldo 7/10. Jadon Sancho: Did brilliantly to hover in an offside position until getting onside just in time to receive Rashford’s through ball for the opening goal. Picked up a booking when stopping Dewsbury-Hall from continuing a dangerous attack, but that was the only blot on his performance. Goalbound free-kick forced De Gea into a quality save. James Maddison: Back from injury, was involved in majority of Leicester’s attacks but often lacked a cutting edge. We spoke to some players over the summer, hoping we could bring in new faces because this group needs it. We’ve been unable to do any work [in the transfer market] and it’s been very frustrating, but from tonight onwards our goal is to win games. 7/10 6/10 And then came the dirty work. United – and De Gea in particular – have often shunned that short passing in favour of the safer, more direct approach.

Full transcript: Martin Dubravka's Man Utd signing interview (Manchester United)

Martin Dubravka has conducted his first interview after signing for Manchester United on a loan deal from Newcastle United.

I think I'm still young so I try to learn things." "I am not even really understanding where I am now, I think it will come a little bit later because there's so many things which I have to process at the moment. "Yes, I have a nickname. "I would say the intensity and the atmosphere at the stadiums. I got lucky, that I have very close friends which always show me the way; how [I should] behave, and I have to say my partner because she went everywhere I go always and supports me, so these people." I don't want to underestimate any league but obviously when you are coming into the Premier League that is a completely different level. "I would describe myself as a vocal person on the pitch, trying to help the players with my organisation and obviously to be a team player. When I realised he was a goalie, I wanted to be a goalie as well and since that moment I just stayed there." I had a personal coach, he helped me a lot, we became very good friends as well during the years, to develop and after that I got a chance to join the first team which was a massive step in my career. I was so lucky that my family have always supported me, that's a huge part of my career and my life." "I wasn't always a goalie, I was an outfield player, I started there. "It is a special place to play, obviously.

Sancho sinks Leicester as Man Utd win three in a row (Sports Brief)

[Portugal](https://sportsbrief.com/facts/teams/16210-portugal-national-football-team-players-coach-fifa-world-rankings-world-cup/) star was unable to find a suitor willing to meet the club's asking price and his desire to play in the Champions League. The vastly experienced Casemiro's stout presence in front of the United defence was a significant blockade to Leicester's hopes of snatching a draw. If there are doubts in his mind about retaining his place, Sancho did his best to remind Ten Hag of his qualities with his second goal of the season. United moved up to fifth place and sit just one point adrift of the top four as Ten Hag begins to make an impact after a nightmare start to his reign. United manager Erik ten Hag worked with Antony in Amsterdam and the 22-year-old looks likely to be a regular in the right wing role currently occupied by Sancho. [Sancho](https://sportsbrief.com/tag/jadon-sancho/) netted with a clinical finish in the first half to seal United's third successive Premier League victory.

Match Report: Leicester 0 United 1 (Manchester United)

Great play between Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford resulted in the ball being threaded through to Sancho and the England international rounded ...

Maddison's curling 25-yard free-kick was tipped away by De Gea to prevent it from nestling in the top corner. Despite a relatively even opening 10 minutes, it was United who quickly put our stamp on the game. Our forward line continued to pick up great positions between the lines and Rashford played in Sancho once again but his effort was well blocked by James Justin, while Harvey Barnes whipped a shot just over the bar. A couple of touches between Dalot, Fernandes and Rashford were all that was required for Sancho to find himself in space and slot home with complete composure, for his second goal of the season. It was a confident and self-assured first-half from the Reds, but Leicester quickly grew into the game, rousing their home fans. David De Gea saved well from James Maddison's free-kick after the break, but United had the better opportunities to double our lead and were comfortable in closing out the win, which takes us up to fifth in the top-flight table.

Manchester United beat Leicester 1-0 to move them up to fifth in the Premier League.

It was the first time Manchester United have won three consecutive games in the division since December 2021, which points to the improvement made under their new manager. Jadon Sancho's strike secured a third straight win for the Red Devils as Erik ten Hag's revolution continues to gather pace. The England international rounded Danny Ward in the first half to leave Leicester rock bottom and move Manchester United up to fifth ahead of Sunday's meeting with leaders Arsenal.

Every word from Mikel's pre-Man Utd presser | Press conference ... (Arsenal.com)

Hear from the boss as he chats about team news, the transfer window and the trip to Old Trafford.

That is the only reason why we are here, and we have to continue to do that. We have obviously tried to get everything done that we can, and sometimes you have to get the right balance. Yesterday it was a real possibility and we tried, but then we kept the decision to say that it has to be the right player for the team and for the club. I think we have learned a lot from that and there's still the players that we have to get out. We have gone through things like that when we hadn’t won at Stamford Bridge for 20 or something years, but you need to believe that you will do that. We have to go into the market and the other teams and coaches are going to tell you how good you are, what your value is and what you’ve done. The attitude of the player is there and he’s really disappointed to be out again as you can imagine, and the team needs him when he’s back. He called me really late last night and it was more of a conversation that we used to have when we were teammates and really good friends. There is nothing else we can do, we have an academy as well that we have to use, and we’ll try to utilise the players in the best possible way. Then we had to react in the market and we tried, but at the end of the day we have to bring in the player that we feel is right for the team and for the club and we didn’t manage to do that. I think that there have been moments when the history and the media were talking about it, and the special rivalry between certain players built a certain momentum into it. No, we had a lot of things still to do in the squad, you see the amount of departures, compared to the number we have recruited.
