There are some fun performances and clever themes in I Came By, two things that elevate it above a lot of the product coming out of the Netflix Thriller ...
“I Came By” is undeniably well-composed and entertaining enough for its missteps to be overlooked most of the time. “I Came By” shifts protagonists here to Toby’s mother (Kelly Macdonald), who grows increasingly concerned that her 23-year-old son has disappeared off the face of the earth. There’s an element of “I Came By” that isn’t so much about what happens behind closed doors as it is about how often powerful people can get away with murder in plain sight. This leads him to the home of a former judge named Hector Blake ( With his buddy Jay ( [Percelle Ascott](/cast-and-crew/percelle-ascott)), Toby breaks into expensive homes and tags a wall with the phrase “I Came By.” Why? [Babak Anvari](/cast-and-crew/babak-anvari)’s “I Came By,” a mostly effective potboiler that has the opposite problem of so many mini-series on the streaming service in that it has a TV season worth of ideas crammed into its runtime.
"I Came By" is centered around two graffiti artists, Toby (George MacKay) and Jay (Percelle Ascott). They go around their town, breaking into the houses of.
Lloyd, along with the rest of the police force, arrives to see Hector all taped up in the corner of the house and the words “I came by” written on the wall. And he says that he is already dead and that he has flushed his ashes down the toilet. And maybe this is going to keep Hector on his toes and make him think twice before committing a crime again. He brutalized him to the extent that he felt liberated and empowered. Jay tails Hector from the school all the way to his new home. He then plants it in Toby’s secret cabinet and nudges Lizzie to make the connection between Toby and Hector and report it to the police. However, he overpowers her and takes her to the basement. Hector proceeds to kill him with a bat and throws him and the bat into the kiln. After seeing that Lizzie is very concerned over Toby’s “disappearance” and the fact that Toby is nowhere to be found, Jay goes to Hector’s house and steals his mail. He realizes there’s a brief window for him to go and knock out Hector and save the boy. But after he notices that in one of those photographs, the boy has a bloodied eye, he begins to panic. But after Jay learns that he’s having a baby with his girlfriend Naz (Varada Sethu), he dips out of the mission, thereby leaving Toby to carry on by himself.
Oh and a big ol' dollop of questionable plotting too. Armed with an incredibly unlikable protagonist, a tired and rehashed “rich VS poor” theme and a final act ...
