Serena Williams' final US Open has plenty of potential contenders (The Guardian)

Both of their singles careers have naturally received far greater attention but their doubles achievements are astounding, their 14 grand slam titles placing ...

The US Open conditions have always brought out the best in him and Medvedev will look to push on again. He will simply have to play himself into form over the course of this tournament, and to see where he lands. Most importantly, aside from some difficult scar tissue, it appears he has continued to make progress with his abdominal muscle and he is the clear favourite. Nadal has not won a match since he withdrew from the Wimbledon semi-final with an abdominal tear, losing in the second round of his only tournament since against Borna Coric in three rusty sets. Naomi Osaka, who started last year as the best player in the world on hard courts, is one such player but she is at a curious moment in her career. Whoever rises to the occasion, playing clean, bold, attacking tennis on the fast US Open courts will win and there are many players capable of doing so.

REA: “I think if she's able to get through two or three matches in the first week, then she's gonna be better for the run and benefit from that time on court, and confidence and momentum starts to grow. REA: "I think Iga Swiatek has to come in again as the favourite... So I think she does need to play practice sets, and get in that mindset of getting out there and feel good in a match situation. And I think on the local side, I think Taylor Fritz is a chance to go really deep at this US Open.” The coaches have changed all the time, there's been no opportunity for her to really settle in as a young player, let alone a Grand Slam champion. I think if she can get through a couple of rounds, I think that's a really good result. I expect him to go deep, like Casey, but I think the edginess is going to make it hard for him to defend the tournament." And he's one of my favourites for the event." I think he’s able to make this into a torrid, survival of the fittest-type battle, best-of-five sets every second day. Because they're just so consistent in their effort, and so hard to beat over the course of five. He needed one to three more matches in that tournament, I think, to be able to go all the way in New York."

Seven reasons why Nick Kyrgios can win the US Open in 2022 (Sporting News)

After falling short in the Wimbledon final two months ago, Nick Kyrgios will have another chance to claim his first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open ...

There are so many people that have helped me get there, but myself I’ve shown some serious strength to just continue and persevere through those times." The Aussie has often referred to the US as a second home and has won three of his seven ATP titles to date in the country. This is what we have seen. Should Kyrgios fail to win the singles title at the US Open in 2022, you'd be brave to bet against him also not triumphing in the men's doubles with Kokkinakis. This is what we’ve been talking about. Kokkinakis and Kyrgios showdown headlines day one at US Open ... (Tennis Australia)

Seven Australians are in action on day one at this year's US Open, including a first-round battle between close friends Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios.

His first task is to overcome world No.44 Krajinovic, a 30-year-old Serbian making his seventh US Open main draw appearance. Although Tomljanovic has avoided a seeded opponent in a Grand Slam opening round for the first time this season, Muchova is a former top-20 player who beat world No.1 Ash Barty to reach the Australian Open 2021 semifinals. Sonego, a 27-year-old Italian contesting his fifth US Open, achieved a career-high of No.21 last season but is currently ranked No.63. The resurgent Saville continues to achieve remarkable results in her comeback. Kokkinakis and Kyrgios’ match, their first in a major tournament, should start around 10.30am AEST tomorrow (Tuesday morning). The world No.103, who has progressed beyond the first round only once in his past seven Grand Slam tournaments, has drawn a 20-year-old American wildcard in the opening round. While 26-year-old Kokkinakis makes his fourth US Open main draw appearance ranked No.70 and aiming to score his first Grand Slam win against a seeded opponent since beating Bernard Tomic at Roland Garros in 2015. A confident De Minaur recently captured his sixth career ATP title at Atlanta. After a first-round exit last year, the world No.20 is determined to make a deep run again. Head-to-head record: First career meeting World No.203 Nava, whose parents both represented Mexico at the Olympics, is a two-time junior Grand Slam singles finalist and looking to record his first career-win at this level. “It will be interesting,” Kokkinakis said.

US Open 2022: Cerúndolo v Murray; Gauff and Halep in action on ... (The Guardian)

The last tennis grand slam of the year swings into action in New York. Join Luke McLaughlin for updates.

All appears to be well for Murray at first, at 40-15 in his opening service game. However, Cerundolo smacks an ace down the middle for the game, after earning himself a game point, and Murray must serve for this first set. At 15-30, Murray produces an unforced error to allow his opponent back to 30-30. Good signs for Murray as he breaks his opponent fairly comfortably and is very much in the ascendancy right now. Murray treats himself to a passionate “Come on!” after creating what looks to be a decisive lead in the second set. But Murray can serve to close it out and move two sets ahead. Murray breaks to kick off the third set! On Louis Armstrong Stadium, Murray holds for 3-1 in the third set. Cerundolo crushes a forehand winner into the corner to take it back to deuce. Anyway, Cerundolo seals another service hold, despite Murray winning a couple of points. Cerundolo is going to make Murray wait. Coco Gauff is up next on Ashe, against French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.

Andy Murray cruises past Francisco Cerúndolo in US Open first round (The Guardian)

The Briton beat the No 24 seed 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to face John Millman or Emilio Nava in the second round.

He broke serve for the set courtesy of a double fault on set point from Cerúndolo, and then he breezed through the match to record a solid win. Murray first served for the set at 5-3, missing an easy overhead at 15-15 and drawing gasps from the dismayed crowd, then he struck two more errors as he lost his serve. The entire stadium stopped to watch the footage in silence and confirmation of the second bounce prompted widespread boos from the crowd. The summer had started in promising fashion, with Murray skipping the French Open in favour of preparing for the grass season. The early months of Cerúndolo’s breakthrough year included a run to the semi-final on the hard courts of the Miami Masters 1000 event in March. Despite the fact Murray arrived on court with a clear opportunity, it was not a simple task.

American champion Serena Williams wins in the opening round of the US Open to keep her singles career alive.

She rolled through the end of that opening set, capping it with a service winner she reacted to with clenched fists and her trademark cry of "come on!" In her first match at what was expected to be the last US Open — and last tournament — of her remarkable playing career, Williams overcame a shaky start to overwhelm Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 in a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium with an atmosphere more akin to a festival than a farewell. Then, suddenly, Williams looked a lot more like someone with six championships at Flushing Meadows and 23 grand slam titles in all.

“Also, I love it because it keeps you fit so that’s a bonus.” In general, either way, everything that she's done, I'm sure it's going to be an emotional night for everyone, for everything she's done on and off the court, I think you can't put into words. “We’re laying it all out here [in doubles],” Serena said. “And Venus as well. A capacity crowd of 23,800 in Arthur Ashe Stadium — including Serena’s 4 1/2 year old daughter Olympia, who wore a sparkling black dress just like her mother, and former President Bill Clinton — was on hand for the event, with courtside seats going for upwards of $5,800. It was reminiscent of “One Shining Moment” played after the NCAA championship game every year. “The crowd was crazy. Beforehand, a video montage played honoring Serena and other past champions. Serena Williams v Danka Kovinic: US Open tennis 2022 – live! (The Guardian)

Game-by-game report: The 23-time major champion opens her campaign in what is almost certainly the final tournament of her career. Beau Dure has the latest.

Kovinić forces Serena into a bad spot in the next rally and goes up 30-40. The next serve nearly knocks the GOAT off her feet and leads to the best rally of the match thus far, with a nice mix of power and slices. On the next point, Serena comes to the net but volleys poorly. At 15-30, Kovinić rips one of her best serves of the match and still loses the point, hanging a drop shot where Serena can easily hit the winner. Then we get a truly outstanding point, with Serena running Kovinić ragged before surprising the Montenegrin with a drop shot. Then turnabout is fair play, as Kovinić puts a shot on nearly the same spot on the court where Serena placed a shot barely on the line and started her big run. But Serena misses her next first serve, and Kovinić rallies well to get to deuce. Serena is momentarily stunned but comes back to win the next point on a Kovinić error. Kovinić starts her attempt to stay in the match with a double fault. The Celebrity Roast of Serena Williams is still in progress, delayed a bit by the fact that Serena had to go out and win a tennis match first. Serena misses an opportunity to go up 40-15, and then another error gives Kovinić a surprising break point. Galan then literally takes a run at the upset, chasing down a drop shot and getting back up to run down another.

Sparkling Serena Williams overcomes tepid start to delight US Open ... (The Guardian)

The retiring 23-time major singles champion won another chance to engineer one last signature moment at Flushing Meadows.

Williams spoke to the audience and in the middle of her comments, she succinctly underlined why this is so meaningful. As Williams processed her victory, she struck a completely different note to her usual outlook. Every roar from the crowd initially seemed to be an unwelcome reminder of the significance of this moment, and as her forehand leaked unforced errors she initially seemed overwhelmed. Olympia, Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, and her sister, Isha, stood by the side of the court. But after her tepid start, Williams slowly found her serve and the free points it unlocked. Her nerves were naturally present from the beginning and she double faulted twice in her opening game. From her player box, Rennae Stubbs, her new consultant for one tournament only, took advantage of the new coaching rules to holler out loud positive affirmations. She entered in a costume that sparkled from head to toe in diamonds, from her hair to the bedazzled cape that trailed her onto the court. Williams walked towards her seat, she clenched both of her fists and she roared into the skies. It was audible in her little footsteps squeaking on the court during every point, the drop shots she chased down at full sprint and the grunts that punctuated every important moment. At the height of her powers, when dominance was her middle name, her mental strength was peerless. In Williams’ player box, her daughter, Olympia, emerged in the stands with beads in her braids, a full circle moment.
