Rory McIlroy Captures the Tour Championship (The New York Times)

Then it swung toward the hole, McIlroy stepping back — and willing, praying, something — a few steps before it rolled into the cup. Scheffler finished in a tie for second with Sungjae Im, one of golf’s most promising young players. By the final holes on Sunday evening, the tour’s worries about crowning a champion who might soon defect to LIV Golf, the new series that has challenged generations of golf orthodoxy and attracted some of the game’s finest players and biggest brands, had faded. McIlroy’s fourth round began with a bogey, but he made birdie on No. Stories like this are possible because of our deep commitment to original reporting, produced by a global staff of over 1,700 journalists who have all dedicated themselves to helping you understand the world. Sungjae Im and Scheffler finished tied for second, a stroke behind.

Rory McIlroy carded a closing round of 66 to stun the odds-on favourite Scottie Scheffler and become the first player to win three Tour Championships.

It’s the greatest place in the world to play golf, bar none, and I’ve played all over the world. I told him we’re one-all in Georgia this year; he got the Masters, I got this. I feel sort of bad that I pipped him to the post.

He admitted that his loss at the Open last month—where he hit all 18 greens in regulation in the final round and still came up two shots short of Smith—stung. Throw in his European Tour success and it’s easy why there’s no reason to get nervous over a payday. I've had a really great year and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that. As it turned out, he would have been tied for 13th in the field if you simply went by raw 72-hole scores. “Even the guys that have went to LIV have had to deal with a lot. Over the course of the remaining 12 holes, it was certainly fair to wonder if dollar signs ever crept into their minds. Two birdies to end his third round Sunday morning helped get him in the final group with Scheffler—but still six behind. He bogeyed three of the first six holes, and it was game on. Then he opened the tournament on Thursday with a triple bogey, followed by a bogey. And the PGA Tour has had to dig deep, coming up with nearly $200 million or so to enhance the lives of many who are already wealthy beyond belief. For Rory McIlroy, it was never seemingly about the riches. It’s been a tumultuous time for the game, no matter what you think of LIV Golf, which exists because of, well, the money.

McIlroy put together a fantastic finish at the Tour Championship and made FedEx Cup history. The Sporting News digs into the numbers behind his victory.

It was the best round of the day and tied Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama for low round of the tournament. McIlroy's $18 million prize eclipses the entire purses of events such as the Masters, PGA Championship, Open Championship and U.S. And before his tournament even started, he was four strokes behind the leader, Scheffler, because of the Tour Championship's handicap scoring. McIlroy faced adversity at the start and end of this weekend's Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Indeed, none of the other golfers in the field even bogeyed both of their first two holes. McIlroy found himself six strokes behind Scheffler to start the fourth round.

Rory McIlroy can't stop, won't stop daggering LIV Golf lawyers (GolfDigest.com)

The prince of the PGA Tour won't EVER let LIV Golf lawyers live down the hackneyed way they described the FedEx Cup in court earlier this month.

McIlroy also got another dig in on LIV Golf during the presser when he noted that it wasn't until the 70th hole of the tournament that he actually was leading for the first time all week. All kidding aside, there was a point during his Tour Championship press conference where McIlroy started to express true frustration about the LIV situation. In turn, golf Twitter had a field day with what was characterized as an out-of-touch description of the postseason by the attorneys that also wasn’t convincing to the U.S. Well, in case you don’t remember, Robert Walters, a lawyer who represented LIV golfers Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones in their court hearing earlier this month seeking an injunction to gain access to the PGA Tour’s playoff events, had described the FedEx Cup as “the Super Bowl of golf" and the hardest trophy to win. On Sunday at East Lake, McIlroy enjoyed another gratuitous moment at the expense of LIV Golf. I feel sort of bad I pipped him to the post.

“There’s one thing I want to say, I feel like Scottie deserves at least half of this today,” McIlroy said on the 18th green. Rory just played a really good round of golf. Meanwhile, neither Cameron Smith or Adam Scott got their challenges going at East Lake. “I told him we are one-all in Georgia this year. “I really fought hard. However, given Scheffler ultimately shared second place with Sungjae Im, his meltdown was worth $A17.8 million.

A close-range birdie at the eighth was enough for Scheffler to edge back ahead until McIlroy rolled in from eight feet at the 12th to get to 20 under, with Im a shot off the pace after cancelling out a bogey at the eighth by picking up a shot at the par-three next and birdieing the 12th.

The PGA Tour's rocky season amid the LIV Golf threat ended on a high note with McIlroy bringing home the $18 million prize.

I’ve had a really great year, and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that. I play to win tournaments, and I play to have fun and do my best and see where the game can take me. The fourth round began two hours after the third round ended, and the tilt began moments after the fourth round began. Then had come a break before the fourth round, so Scheffler and McIlroy and Jon Rahm and others had lunched together. But at the end of the day, it’s such a gift to be out here playing golf for money, and I can’t — I’m just so thankful to be out here.” With that said, the weekend could turn to the weekdays and the LIV plays — the presumed resumption of who might defect next to the exhibition-style series, which already had snared 10 of the current top 50, albeit zero of the top 10. I believe in the players on this tour. I believe in this tour, in particular. Soon McIlroy said to the bunched-in crowd: “I believe in the game of golf. It's both a miracle and a relief that he came through in Atlanta; to have won only a Canadian Open and a CJ Cup in the fall, after a season like this, would be practically tragicomic. "It's going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing 18 of them there," McIlroy said, referring to LIV golfers who are currently in the field at next week’s BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour, in which Rory is also competing. And, of course, there was the coup de grace, his wrenching fall from the lead on Sunday at St. If you want to know about that stuff, you know who of the two players you have to ask." There was the hovering at the U.S. There was his surge on Sunday at Augusta, capped by the hole-out on 18 for a closing 64 to finish (albeit a distant) second. So thorough was his influence (and perhaps his control) that Jon Rahm, when asked about potential changes to the new format, laughed and said, "You're asking the wrong guy. Time and time again all year, the now 21-time tour winner has been vocal in his opposition to the Saudi-funded upstarts. The fact that there's an excuse to cut him a massive check at the final hour must seem like history and fate aligning on the side of cosmic justice. Now that Rory McIlroy has won the FedEx Cup and its $18 million prize, what stands out in the aftermath is his own Zelig-esque ubiquity in this strangest of years. Speaking of Scheffler, there was an interesting moment following a post-round interview at the year's first playoff event, in Memphis, earlier this month. On the course and off, no matter what story took prominence, McIlroy was there, the PGA Tour's universal soldier, turning up to win and lose in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

We should note this was before the Stealth line was available, but the SIM2 had been out for the season and Rory never made a full-time switch to the club. Considering Scheffler’s Texas upbringing, it should be no surprise the Dallas native (Scheffler was born in Ridgewood, N.J., but his family moved to Texas in 1999 when he was 3) was linked to Nike Golf headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, early in his playing days. McIlroy needed to eagle 18, just as Young had done in the group ahead of him, to force a playoff with Smith. A second win north of the border came in similar fashion to his win in 2019, with an incredible final round to hold off a strong leaderboard. McIlroy started the final round of this year’s Masters 10 shots behind Scheffler. He was nine back after his opening hole and fell a shot farther behind with a bogey on the next hole. “To claw my way back and end up winning the tournament, incredible,” McIlroy said. The 30-footer for birdie on 15 in the TOUR Championship’s final round is fodder for highlight reels.
