It's Time for Salman Rushdie's Nobel Prize (The New Yorker)

His literary accomplishments richly merit recognition from the Swedish Academy—and the prize would be a symbolic rebuke to the enemies of the free word.

As a literary artist, Rushdie is richly deserving of the Nobel, and the case is only augmented by his role as an uncompromising defender of freedom and a symbol of resiliency. When a group of six writers refused to attend a PEN gala, in 2015, because it was honoring the editors of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Rushdie said, “If PEN as a free-speech organization can’t defend and celebrate people who have been murdered for drawing pictures, then frankly the organization is not worth the name.” Of the writers who spurned the dinner, he said, “I hope nobody ever comes after them.” He was so insistent on living his life without performing the role of a “Statue of Liberty,” as he put it, that he played himself on an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” counselling Larry David on the forbidden pleasures of “fatwa sex.” Solzhenitsyn was capable of many deeds, but not that. Roald Dahl, John Berger, and John le Carré were some of the writers who judged Rushdie to have been insufficiently attentive to clerical sensitivities in Tehran. In the mid-nineteen-eighties, Salman Rushdie’s masterpieces, “Midnight’s Children” and “Shame,” had been translated into Persian and were admired in Iran as expressions of anti-imperialism. Despite this folly, the Nobel Prize remains an object of such desire that it can induce a kind of rueful despair in authors who wait in vain for the call from Stockholm.

Is it time we ditched the word 'gardening'? (The Guardian)

The term might seem inoffensive, but it's loaded with cultural baggage, says James Wong.

My question to plant lovers is: do we need to ditch the term “gardening” to reach new people? Despite having worked in the horticultural industry for almost two decades as a trained botanist, even I am rarely called a “proper” gardener when I attend a horticultural event. To me, one of the key issues behind this is the many euphemisms for “gardening” that are used, particularly online.

Narayan Khanal: It's time to lower the voting age in Australia (St George and Sutherland Shire Leader)

By the age of 17, young people can be charged with criminal offences, start working full time and pay taxes, legally engage in sexual intercourse, drive vehicles, give consent for medical procedures, and be part of the defence force.

In 2014, Scotland enfranchised those above the age of 16 to participate in their referendum and they are now in the process of legislation to allow those that are between the ages of 16 and 17 to be candidates for parliament. The reasoning for this is logical - the earlier young people engage in political processes, the more likely they are to continue to participate in voting. When Australia lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 back in 1973, the guiding principle for that decision was the loss of lives and serious injury that those between the ages of 18 and 21 suffered in the wars.

Family Law with Paula Phelan. Divorce is the formal step of legally dissolving a marriage after both parties have been 'separated' for 12 months.

To avoid a double gift, it is imperative that you finalise your divorce as soon as possible. If you have children under 18 years of age, the court needs to be satisfied that the care arrangements for the children are proper before granting a divorce. Divorce is the formal step of legally dissolving a marriage after both parties have been ‘separated’ for 12 months.

Illinois State All-Time Wins Leader Melinda Fischer Announces ... (Illinois State Athletics)

The winningest coach in Illinois State Athletics history is calling it a career, as legendary softball coach Melinda Fisher announced her retirement Sunday ...

Fischer first became a member of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) in 1960 and has been appointed as an NCAA Regional representative for numerous regional tournaments, as well as serving on NCAA Regional ranking committees. Knowing she would work her way back to NCAA Division I softball, Fischer started a three-year coaching stint at Eastern Illinois in 1976 and was originally hired as the head women's basketball coach, a post she held for three years. A two-time inductee into the Illinois State Athletics Percy Family Hall of Fame and a 2016 ISU College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) Hall of Fame member, Fischer's success and devotion to softball extends well beyond Illinois State. Fischer returned to her alma mater to become a co-head coach of the women's basketball team in 1980. "I have been impressed and inspired by her stature as a leader, pioneer, and legend not only at Illinois State University, but in the larger realm of college sports." Fischer's 1,159 career victories, spread out among 39 seasons as a collegiate head coach (at both Eastern Illinois [1979-80] and Illinois State [1986-2022]), rank her as the 18th-winningest coach in NCAA Division I softball history.

Jobs summit: Why full-time, part-time distinction is irrelevant in a post ... (The Australian Financial Review)

Those attending Labor's jobs summit this week will hear that greater workplace flexibility will help women achieve their full economic potential.

“Australia has a proud history of providing low-cost housing, starting with Menzies in the mid-20th century. But the four-day week is considered a male-oriented approach to workplace flexibility. Part-time workers are also less likely to be promoted or offered training and other opportunities,” she said. Connect with Tom on [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) “Women are more likely than men to perform significant amounts of unpaid work each week and are more likely to perform work which needs to happen daily. The pandemic proved to employers that greater flexibility did not have to lead to a drop in productivity and was not too complex to administer,
