This recap of the Netflix K-Drama Alchemy of Souls season 1, episode 20, the finale and ending explained, contains spoilers.
In front of the King, Jin Mu says that he found Naksu to clear his name and reveals his hopes for Songrim to be strongly punished for what happened. Dang-gu informs his uncle that he believes his friend was already aware of Mu-deok’s real identity, as well as the fact that Jin Mu is raiding Jeongjingak to find proof of said claim. After Maidservant Kim vehemently cries over how Jang Uk’s death is being treated “as if he is a criminal,” unable to have his cremation altered to something more respectful, we cut to the proceeding. Rather interestingly, the controlled soul shifter recalls her own father when hearing the cries of Cho-yeon, ready to head the order of Jin Mu to murder those responsible for his death. Next, we watch the wedding between Dang-gu and Cho-yeon, one that looks set to be a celebratory occasion despite some petty squabbles between the leaders of Songrim and Jinyowon. Unable to be calmed down by the former assassin’s rationale that he will only feel worse should Uk stick around, the Crown Prince vocalises his displeasure in Mu-deok being with her partner, requesting that they go far away so that they can stay safe from his potential “violent, wicked” feelings that would see an end to the pairing’s relationship. Meanwhile, the Crown Prince tells Jin Mu that he will cast Jang Uk, who is believed to be without the ice stone, far away, and orders the assistant Gwanju to admit to his crimes by the end of the day. Unfortunately for the royal, he does not get Park Jin to crack, meaning that Jang Uk’s identity is still not properly admitted to. As such, Jin Mu heads out to confirm that the maid is in fact Naksu, manipulating her with the divination bells. Recalling the information that a divination curse on the Soul Ejector can control the soul that uses it, Jin Mu picks up his newly acquired bells, ready to make any given soul shifter run wild. Later on, Park Jin discusses Jin Mu’s knowledge of Jang Uk’s reality with his partner, informing her that the Cheonbugwan leader turned Cho Chung into a monster solely to torture the Gwanju. Finding out that he was given the missing So-i’s blood, the genius mage trusts that he will get better soon and asks that his condition is kept a secret.
The K-drama 'Alchemy of Souls' ended with a cliffhanger with Episode 20 as fans anticipate the next season with a more powerful Naksu and Jang Uk.
Jin-mu declares that Mu-deok is Naksu and that she is a soul shifter. In her state of drunkenness, Mu-deok is close to revealing that she's Naksu but Jang Uk takes her away. Unbeknownst to her own actions, Mu-deok stabs Jang Uk with her sword. In the forest, when she is all by herself, Naksu (in Mu-deok's body) is plagued by Jang Uk's voice. As she is passed out, Jang Uk pledges to tell Mu-deok what Master Lee said when they have left the city. Learning that Go Won is still unaware of Jang Uk's power, Jin-mu reveals the truth about Jang Uk to the crown prince which infuriates him. Jang Uk also confesses to Master Lee that he no longer has the power of the Ice Stone. However, the mage is plotting to cast a Soul Ejector curse when he is informed that Jang Uk plans on leaving the city. She bickers with him for a bit but after he reassures her that Mu-deok is the only one for him, she lets go of her anger. Jang Uk is bemused to learn that Maidservant Kim and Mu-deok have had some drinks. He asks Jin-mu to confess and come clean but Jin-mu states that Jang Uk might still be hiding his power. She hints that she would like to live in a small house with him but Park Jin thinks she is asking for a gift.
The finale of the K-drama left more to be explored as the teaser for 'Alchemy of Souls' Season 2 has actor Go return to her role as Nak-su.
As the K-drama grew in popularity, reports stated Alchemy of Souls Season 2 would bring back actor Go for the main cast. But Nak-su’s body was burnt to ash at the beginning of the K-drama. Above all, the Alchemy of Souls Season 2 teaser reveals actor Go’s return as Nak-su. So far, all of the original cast, besides Jung So-min, are confirmed to return. It soon led fans to wonder if the K-drama would bring back the character of Nak-su. The possibility is still unclear as there is much more to explore about the stone’s powers. The K-drama’s ending makes fans believe that Nak-su’s body somehow finds a way to return. But what does Go’s official return mean for Nak-su in the new season? Seo Yul is the only character who seems to radiate with light, as the teaser also shows the Prince. Overall, the first season Netflix’s Alchemy of Souls was an enticing, consistently solid introduction to (and journey through) the complex world of Daeho. In the grand scheme of things, the flaws are only minute complaints though, especially when there is so much to praise. Similarly, the unravelling changes of Mu-deok from a resilient, steely assassin to a selfless, caring partner are sweet in how they play out, especially given the fact she never quite loses touch with the hard-nosed person she once was. Laced with intricacy, detail, and dedicated world building, Alchemy of Souls has all the hallmarks of a noteworthy, memorable K-Drama. As touched on earlier, this level of intricate detail is a major strength, as well as a periodic flaw. Add to that a stacked support cast which ranges from swindlers to soul shifting Queens, and again it’s clear just how layered Alchemy of Souls is.
