Southampton vs. Manchester United live updates: Score, highlights ... (The Athletic)

Erik ten Hag will be hoping to secure his second Premier League win when his Manchester United side travel to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

Man United are looking to find space in behind the Southampton defence but the hosts have coped well so far. Southampton are clearly looking to cause problems with balls into the box. In-form Che Adams has his first shot on goal with a header that loops over the bar. Then it's Adams who wriggles away from the defence and fires an effort straight at De Gea. 36’ Southampton 0-0 Manchester United 40’ Southampton 0-0 Manchester United A series of superb blocks by the Southampton defenders kept Fernandes, Eriksen and Elanga out before Bella-Kotchap missed the target with the host's best chance. 42’ Southampton 0-0 Manchester United It's Bella-Kotchap who makes a huge challenge to deny Elanga as he latched onto a one-two in the box. Manchester United Confirmed Lineup vs Southampton: Casemiro... (The Hard Tackle)

Casemiro and Cristiano Ronaldo are on the bench, as the starting eleven remains unchanged for Manchester United's meeting with Southampton.

Marcus Rashford will thus spearhead the Manchester United attack against Southampton, with Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga being the two wide men, leaving Ronaldo as a possible substitute. The midfield unit surprisingly does not see a change, with Casemiro on the bench. David de Gea retains his spot between the sticks, with Tom Heaton being the backup option on the bench.

Minute-by-minute report: Can Erik ten Hag's men continue their revival with a second straight win? Join Scott Murray.

A daft challenge, and a free kick in a very dangerous position, just to the right of the Saints D. 39 min: In a tight spot in the United box, Adams spins away from Martinez. But United come again, McTominay chasing down the right and taking a whack from a tight-ish angle. Rashford battles for the ball, but Kotchap is determined to usher the ball out of play for a goal kick, and he’s strong enough to get the job done without fear or fuss. 53 min: Kotchap is having a fine game, so it’s a worry for Saints that he goes down feeling the back of his leg. 59 min: Dalot’s poor pass out from the back leads to a Saints throw, deep in United territory on the left. 44 min: Aribo sticks out a leg in the hope of poking the ball away from McTominay, who needs no further invitation to go down. On BT Sport, Paul Scholes thinks this game is tailor-made for Ronaldo, on account of his being not half bad at getting on the end of a cross. Nothing comes of the break, but what a block! The away fans enjoyed that, and sing a paean to Argentina. Adams is brought to a thundering halt by Martinez, but the ball breaks to Stuart Armstrong, whose shot is blocked in equally unceremonious style by McTominay. 85 min: Kotchap channels his inner Beckenbauer by snaffling a loose ball 40 yards from the United goal, breezing past Casemiro, entering the box, and …

Manchester United set to increase bid in order to seal Antony transfer (The Peoples Person)

Manchester United have three points to show after as many games in the Premier League and it has been far from smooth sailing for new manager Erik ten Hag.

“Antony is becoming restless at the two clubs’ failure to agree a fee for him. There are doubts whether United will go past the €100 million threshold but another increased bid is likely. [Casemiro](https://thepeoplesperson.com/2022/08/27/casemiro-to-wear-number-18-for-manchester-united-251802/) deal was also quite pricey as United entered negotiations quite late. But this is not expected to stop United’s pursuit of the Brazilian winger. They took their time before managing to get free agent Christian Eriksen to sign on the dotted lines. The Dutchman is facing the same issues which at one point had plagued his predecessors.

Fernandes seals tight win for resurgent Manchester United at ... (The Guardian)

Bruno Fernandes's sweetly struck finish early in the second half gave Manchester United a 1-0 win against Southampton in a keenly contested match.

The referee was looking directly at the incident but his view was possibly concealed by McTominay, who appeared to juggle the ball with both his left and right hands before swatting it away in the box. It is a new way of playing and [there are] a lot of new facts. We started from the first day of pre-season to get that in and now the window is not closed so every time a new player is in we have to inform them about the rules. First Fernandes miscued a header from a Diogo Dalot cross under pressure from Walker-Peters and from there another barmy few seconds in the United chronicles ensued. Tyrell Malacia was bright, Christian Eriksen was typically classy at the base of midfield and, for all of the flak that came his way following the dismal defeats by Brentford and Brighton, Lisandro Martínez was gallant in defence. More new faces are expected too, with Ten Hag keen on signing a backup goalkeeper and a reunion with the Ajax forward Antony, who has made clear his desire to depart the Eredivisie club.

Things we learned from Southampton v Man Utd (Manchester United)

The Reds built on Monday' fantastic win against Liverpool to rack up our first away win of the Premier League season - and a first competitive victory away from ...

Dalot’s pinpoint assist proved to be match-winning for United at a key point of the game. Perhaps most impressively of all, he audibly dictated when his teammates needed to tighten up through the centre. United’s new signing only entered the pitch with 10 minutes to go, and he was absolutely everywhere! Saints couldn’t deal with the sheer numbers in the box as Fernandes was left wide open on the edge for his magic moment. The Portuguese right-back stayed composed, recovered possession and offered a physical presence throughout. The 23-year-old’s crunching tackle down the wing gave him an early boost of confidence and he never looked back. Another Elanga run inside set the goal in motion by freeing up space for Dalot, Sancho and Bruno in one fell swoop. Bruno’s ability to link passing moves together brought the likes of Sancho and Marcus Rashford into the game when they would have otherwise been completely isolated. There was a 15-minute spell just after half-time where our manager’s intelligence changed the course of the game. His calmness on the ball and ability to pick a simple pass also aided us in some tight positions as Southampton overloaded the flanks. He also showed real desire to bomb forward and aid the attack. Fernandes’s lethal winner sealed the win, in what was his second consecutive match wearing the captain's armband.

PLAYER RATINGS: Manchester United back four impress in win ... (Daily Mail)

Bruno Fernandes' goal proved the difference between the two sides with United's defence standing firm in the face of late Southampton pressure.

Christian Eriksen – 7.5: Excellent in the first half. Wasted a good attacking chance right before the final whistle. Should have scored on 30 minutes when the ball fell to him in space from a corner, however. Headed straight at David de Gea from a good position on 65 minutes. Anthony Elanga – 6: Failed to make the opportunities he did get on the ball count and was denied by a great stop from Bazunu on 19 minutes, from which he probably should have scored. Cristiano Ronaldo – 6: Won a few balls in the air after coming on but was not presented with any opportunities to test the goalkeeper. Diogo Dalot – 8: His crossing was excellent, picking out Fernandes for the opening goal in the second half while it was his ball in that led to United’s flurry of chances on 19 minutes. Adam Armstrong – 7: Perhaps could have done better with a header on 13 minutes but caused problems for United down the left, including picking out Adams with a good low ball on 31 minutes and then crossing to Aribo for his header in the second half. Stuart Armstrong – 6: Brought on to provide more energy and to put United under more pressure and managed to do that, though didn’t impact the game on the ball a great deal. Joe Aribo – 6: A few nice touches here and there but the game seemed to pass him by operating in the number 10 role. Romeo Lavia – 6.5: Performed his role pretty well overall, keeping hold of possession in midfield when under pressure on a number of occasions thanks to his strength on the ball. Gavin Bazunu – 7.5: Made a great save to keep out Anthony Elanga on 19 minutes and also denied Scott McTominay’s volley in the second half.
