One of the rare characters in this film that knew how to bring it in every time he’s on-screen! Sonny needs to take time away from his family and reconnect with his life outside of them, including focusing on his own needs. In the early 2000s, writer/director John Hamburg was one of the best comedy minds in the industry. With the incredible early success of Meet The Parents, Zoolander, & I Love You, Man, Hamburg created iconic characters that still resonate with fans like myself to this day (I was once Zoolander for Halloween in my early 20s. They never seem to have a shorthand or a bond that brings them closer. Fun fact: This is the seventh movie that Kevin Hart & Regina Hall have acted in together.

The latest Kevin Hart buddy comedy, this time on Netflix, sees him enlist Mark Wahlberg for help with his supposed masculinity problems.

It’ll shock no one that, at regular intervals throughout this mirthless affair, Hart is also demeaned as a “bitch” and a “pussy,” and told that he has no “balls,” the film underscoring his quasi-castrated condition so often that the headliner’s schtick begins to feel borderline masochistic. Wahlberg does a halfhearted version of his goofy-cheery musclehead routine, and Hall is saddled with a two-dimensional character designed to be both a matronly scold and a negative example of what happens when women prioritize their careers over their kids. It’s at this juncture that Hamburg’s tale indulges in the first of its dreary switcheroos, revealing Huck to be far less sure of himself than he outwardly appears, which is as surprising as the fact that Hart seizes every opportunity to scream and flail about in trademark bug-eyed, temper-tantrum style. He’s a suburban domesticated dork and for that is mocked and humiliated by just about everyone he meets—no matter the backhanded praise he receives for being so good at his duties. This isn’t as crazy as the fact that Sonny’s best friend is named “Huck Dembo,” which sounds less like a person than something you’d spend hours searching for at Home Depot.

The safest kinds of films are often the most uninteresting, and that’s definitely a sentiment that frustratingly applies to Me Time. That leads him back into the path of Wahlberg’s childhood best friend Huck Dembo, a manchild that’s approaching middle age with as little grace and dignity as possible, with the old buddies reconnecting on Huck’s 44th birthday bash that takes them into the desert. Me Time takes a talented filmmaker and a strong ensemble that should be playing to their strengths, but drowns everything in the unshakeable stench of mediocrity.

Eager to cut loose while preaching family values, "Me Time" is a movie at war with itself. But hit-and-miss sight gags do not add up to the rowdy free-for-all that everyone clearly intended. Granite City needs a superhero, and they get one — maybe — in the form of Joe Smith (Sylvester Stallone), an anonymous looking city dweller whom young Sam (Javon Walton) believes may be Samaritan, former protector of the city streets. "Overlord" director Julius Avery doesn't break the mold here, but he tells a grounded story that forgoes capes, tights and most hallmarks of today's superhero extravaganzas. Kevin Hart is a straight-laced dad and Mark Wahlberg is a loose cannon bachelor in "Me Time," a brutally unfunny buddy comedy, which makes no attempt to ever connect to anything resembling reality.

The promise/premise of the movie is these two and their scenes get held back to an odd degree. The most underdeveloped of the three, actually, is Wahlberg's Huck, whose man-child catharsis at the end happens too speedily as the movie tidily figures out that everyone can have everything they want in terms of family and career. What works best are some of the actual lines and exchanges that capitalize on Hart and Wahlberg's fast-talking chemistry. In the case of Me Time, the reason Hart's Sonny is friendless, or at least hasn't really connected with his childhood friend Huck Dembo (Wahlberg, with a superb doltish movie name) in over a decade, is because he's rigidly dedicated himself to being a househusband and helicopter father after starting his own family. It's a different type of self-dug hole in that regard as the film, clumsily for the most part, addressees the issue of giving away too much of yourself for fear that you have no value outside of acts of service. And now that the idea is out in the ether, it’s up to Hart to act on it. But in between them, will it really hurt him to do something in the vein of “Shanghai Noon” and “Rush Hour”? And one of the ways to do so is by being with your loved ones and ensuring that you all have the space to co-exist. Finiteness means that you have to make the best of it. Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg’s on-screen chemistry is, for the lack of a better word, explosive. However, it’s undeniable that irrespective of the film or show he’s in, Hart never sleepwalks through his roles. They play everything so ironically that you cannot help but laugh at the innocence of their accidents and insults. Of course, this is a result of the writing, which largely revolves around “dad jokes” and safe humor. Finiteness doesn’t mean you have to make the most of it. He has showcased his dramatic acting chops in “ [Fatherhood](https://dmtalkies.com/fatherhood-summary-review-2021-film-kevin-hart/)” and one of the best miniseries of all time, “ [True Story](https://dmtalkies.com/true-story-ending-explained-netflix-mini-series-kevin-hart/).” But since hardly anyone logged into their Netflix accounts to watch those last two, he’s back again with a buddy comedy. Or that he’s on the verge of having a midlife crisis. The ethos of the film is quite antithetical to its title.

'Me Time' is another messy, lackluster Netflix original film. The Kevin Hart-led comedy premieres on the streaming service on Friday, August 26.

Mark Wahlberg, in particular, falls flat as Huck, who easily ranks as one of the most underwritten and thinly sketched characters that the Fighter and Ted star has ever played. The film’s opening flashback to one of Sonny and Huck’s previous adventures quickly — and quite messily — sets up the kind of zany adventures that the duo used to get into before the former decided to settle down with his family. The film has all the ingredients that it needs in order to be a successfully absurd farce in the same vein as many of the studio comedies that were released throughout the early and mid-2000s. Additionally, the film’s biggest plot beats are so loosely connected that it’s difficult to remember how Me Time even gets from one to the other throughout its story. What’s even worse is that Hamburg doesn’t even follow through on the promise of Huck’s outsized 44th birthday party. When he goes to use the bucket for the first time, he suddenly finds himself alone in a stand-off with a hungry mountain lion.

I can’t wait because I know there’s going to be a lot of laughter, and [that’s] what the world needs, and this guy’s been providing so many laughs and keeping people entertained through the difficult times. I was so pissed! To have him come… Wahlberg: Oh man, I never got to do no scenes with him. It was a complete shock to them, but people are going to absolutely love this movie. It’s not until it’s presented to him or brought up that he has some type of understanding of that. I can’t wait to see the rest of the cast, there’s so many wonderful performances in this movie. And he is just a really nice guy, so to be able to go and cut loose after I just did, I had just done Uncharted. So talk to me about like the script’s portrayal of work-life balance because that’s an issue everybody can relate to. Then I came into this movie and it was just so much fun.
