The ex-Monaro MP withdrew from the trade commissioner role soon after his appointment was announced due to a public and political backlash. Giving evidence before a parliamentary inquiry into his appointment as NSW's trade and investment commissioner to the Americas this month, Mr Barilaro said his life after politics had been a "personal hell". Mr Barilaro was at the time subject to intense scrutiny over his appointment to a public service trade role based in New York.
