It's wonderful to once again live in a world where Britney is happy and healthy, but Hold Me Closer is an underwhelming return.
The names alone are enough to drive this song’s success, and I wish it well because a world with a happier, healthier Britney Spears is a better one. The general public will hear this song on the radio and react with surprise when they find out she’s billed equally alongside Sir Elton. As soon as Hold Me Closer leaves its opening strands behind, it kicks in with a funked-up force and syncopated bass riff that are both instantly reminiscent of Dua’s Don’t Start Now. [back on the scene](https://metro.co.uk/2022/08/26/sir-elton-john-held-britney-spears-hand-to-help-her-through-collab-17247734/) and in a happier place. But where Dua’s Don’t Start Now was unmistakably hers, there are no Britney calling cards anywhere to be found on Hold Me Closer. He landed a smash hit alongside Dua Lipa with Cold Heart – which interpolated his 1972 hit Rocket Man. I was unsurprised to learn that Watt worked with Dua on Future Nostalgia. Even in the age of streaming, when musical trends have better longevity, the charts still move fast. The look, the voice, the songs – she was, and remains, unmistakable. But for most Britney fans, the wait has been an anxious and lengthy six years. It’s good to have her back. I’m not a Britney devotee, so I’d been largely ignorant of what was really going on behind the scenes.
Elton John has recalled how he helped Britney Spears overcome her "fear" of returning with new music following a six-year hiatus.
I pray there actually is truth to the Holy Spirit and I hope that spirit is with my children as well !!! “I want to be fearless like when I was younger and not be so scared and fearful. She continued: “I’m learning everyday is a clean slate to try and be a better person and do what makes me happy … “We had to get her to approve what she did,” he told the publication. “That’s all anybody in their right mind would want after she went through such a traumatic time.” “It’s a big deal to me!!!” she wrote.

reviewer Will Hodgkinson was not as enthusiastic. , "There's something about Britney's voice and a dance track that just go extremely well together -- like red wine and a basket of bread. He adds that "Spears seems to hint at finding that for herself again in music. You sound so good!" Another said: "welcome back!!!! We have missed you so much Brit, you can't imagine how happy it makes me to hear you singing again," one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Amorpha” starts with plinking mallet percussion patterns that recall Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians,” but the 10-minute piece soon takes its own dizzying path, with undulating synthesizers, flickers of hyperspeed and slyly shifting meters behind its steady pulse. Bitchin Bajas is the jokey name of a serious instrumental trio from Chicago that explores the possibilities of repetition where minimalism, psychedelia, jazz, dub and electronica overlap. Their overlap is in stately songs with hymnlike chords, and that’s what “Weird Goodbyes” is: Matt Berninger of the National and Vernon sharing harmonies in lyrics about self-doubt. In her conversational delivery, Jacklin offers a font of healthy and practical advice: Quit smoking, drive the speed limit and put away some money in case of an emergency because, as she admits, “I’m making plans for my future and I plan on you being in it.” It’s a tender sentiment, but the song crackles with an undercurrent of jangly, distorted guitar and palpable anxiety, as Jacklin frets that a love so pure is doomed to be lost. [Margo Price](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/12/arts/music/margo-price-all-american-made.html) contains multitudes on her rollicking new single “Been to the Mountain”: “I’ve been a dancer, a saint, an assassin,” she sings with a hard-living swagger atop a chugging guitar riff. The moment where she sighs, “This is living!”—well, that’s a lot like how “Hold Me Closer” feels.
