There is no proper villain and this is where the conflict created by Puri does not create much impact. There is no proper conflict in the film and the hero’s journey looks half-baked. But there are a few good mass moments and Vijay’s transformation which will be loved by the B and C center audience making this film a strictly passable watch. The sports drama created by Puri is also beaten to death and has no freshness. Ali is decent in his role and Getup Sreenu evokes a few laughs in the first half. Vijay Devarakonda’s stammering act looks good in the promos but does not gel well in the film. Puri is known to elevate his hero characters but there are not many scenes that do such in Liger. The twist featuring Ananya Pandey looks silly and has not been handled well. The rest of the story is about how a heartbroken Liger gets back in form and wins the international MMA championship. Perhaps it is the biggest mistake of Puri Jagan to show him as a man with a disability. His stammering act is irritating but he manages it well in the second half. Liger is one of the most awaited films in recent times.

In a promotional interview, the Arjun Reddy actor claimed that Liger is already a 'blockbuster'. Liger's ultimate aim in life is to become a famous MMA fighter. Balamani (Ramya Krishnan) and her son Liger (Vijay Deverakonda), who reside in Karimnagar, move to Mumbai to make it big in the world of MMA. The answer is a big no.

Bullying is the leitmotif of the film. Backdrops range from a pub to a metro rail but the themes remain stuck in one place. The flips and the feet-flying combats don't give a high for the reason that the writing falters incessantly. He makes the susceptible underdog look sweet, although we can't say he is irresistibly so. In 'Liger', though, the writing is rudimentary. The bad guys are reduced to dolts. Vijay Deverakonda is measured and earnest. Forget the emotions for a while. The film and the fights don’t provide a high. The idea of a protagonist with a stammering problem is irritating. The film further goes downhill when the story shifts to Las Vegas. Puri Jagannadh begins this film as an inspirational story of a rise of a champion from a humble background. The Las Vegas sequences and the production values have brought the film a rich look. The film has a Mumbai setting. More than the story, the film doesn’t have a strong conflict or high emotional quotient, or a strong villain, the essential elements for mass movies. The so-called MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fights and sequences, which come one after the other, make a tiresome watch. Let’s find out whether the film lives up to the hype. The combination of director Puri Jagannadh and young sensation Vijay Deverakonda has occupied the media and social media space lately. However, the script doesn’t give him anything to go beyond the surface. But, it turns out to be a wasted effort as “Liger” looks like an exercise with no proper script.

This Puri Jagannadh and Vijay Deverakonda film is a mishmash of sport, action and drama in which nothing makes an impact.

At the start of the film, the protagonist says that he is not good at narrating a story, but he will try. [Mike Tyson](https://www.thehindu.com/entertainment/movies/mike-tyson-to-star-in-vijay-deverakondas-liger/article36694213.ece) has its moments, but coming at the fag end of a shoddily-written story, it is too little and too late. Chunky Pandey appears in a brief character that begins as glitzy and fizzles out. Once Liger’s potential in MMA is established, the story introduces the leading lady who is characterised as a dimwit who is both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious, and annoying. Was that Puri’s way of showing the power of women after a string of glam doll characterisations of the leading women in his last few films? Ramya can pack a punch as a courageous mother but she is mostly made to scream and shout. Here the characterisations and storytelling are so banal that it is tough to root for the underdog story. In the opening minutes of Liger, a voiceover describes the title character as a slumdog from the streets of Mumbai who is aiming to win on an international podium. Predictable scenes follow in which Liger is ridiculed by the students of MMA and he has to fight to earn their respect. Some sort of a reveal about Tanya’s true reaction to the mother’s angst comes much later but by then, nothing matters as the film goes on a downward spiral. Hailing from Karimnagar and raising him on her own, she has moved to Mumbai to see him as an MMA national champion; the mother and son make ends meet by managing a tea stall. She goes to the balcony and waves to the crowd in a manner similar to SRK from Mannat.

She drills into the boy that it is for him to complete his father's unfulfilled dream of become the national champion. If anything, he only drags it down all the way to the level of his own bootlaces. It is massive mess of a movie that Vijay Deverakonda's newfangled physique and action chops cannot salvage. Liger idolizes legendary MMA fighter Mark Anderson (Mike Tyson, in his first Indian movie, has an extended cameo that is cringe-inducing as everything else in Liger), whose portrait hangs on the wall of his modest home. The lady tells her son that everyone in this world has flaws but if he manages to achieve his goal his speech will begin to sound like a song. The lead actor is saddled with spectacularly sloppy scenes in which the other actors are required to holler at the top of their voices to make up for the monosyllables that the pugnacious hero utters with a great degree of difficulty. It devises means to sink even deeper into a quagmire of clumsiness in the very next sequence. That is the kind of movie Liger is. This is a Hindi-Telugu bilingual written and directed by Puri Jagannadh, whose Puri Connects banner has bankrolled the film in collaboration with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. But these are strictly of the kind that the film and the Arjun Reddy star could have done without.

We learn nothing about Liger’s own strengths and weaknesses in the MMA arena, except notice that he has a proclivity for showing the middle-finger a lot and also, drawing attention to his crotch during fights. The film’s supposed to be about an underdog “fightaaaaa” winning big at the Mixed Martial Arts, and yet, we learn precious little about the sport—with the fights interpreted as stunt sequences in your average mass film. In one love scene, she asks him to say her name and when he stutters before finishing, she exclaims, “So cute!”—like a zoo visitor observing an exotic animal making a strange noise. I wouldn’t have blamed Liger at all, had he felt justified in interrogating his mother about giving him a name that’s likely to scar him for life… "Liger", the film, is about a mother and son, who have come to Mumbai with the ambition of pursuing MMA glory.
