Should Dortmund land Dest from Barcelona, as has been rumored this week, that would take Barça out of the running here and make a Chelsea/Juventus-Dortmund-Rangers trio in any group even more of a lure from a U.S. So any combination that features one of Chelsea, Barcelona and Juventus out of Pot 2 and then Dortmund and Rangers will surely catch the eye of USMNT staff, players and supporters alike in the coming weeks (since Frankfurt and Dortmund can’t be drawn together given they are both Bundesliga clubs, there’s no scenario in which all four clubs in a group features U.S. Sadio Mané has gotten off to a brilliant start with Bayern Munich, and two of his former clubs are involved in the competition. With Russian clubs barred from competition due to its nation’s invasion of Ukraine, the past stipulation that kept Russian clubs and Ukrainian clubs apart in the group stage is no longer in play. A Bayern-Liverpool-Inter/Napoli-Marseille group also offers a similar effect—four clubs in Europe’s top five leagues all with the talent to reach the knockout stage. The remaining pots are set in club coefficient order (a formula that takes into account the results of each club in UEFA competitions based on performances over the last five seasons), which limits the potential for true groups of death but does offer some intriguing possibilities.

Who can Chelsea get in the Champions League draw? (Chelsea FC)

We take a closer look at the teams Chelsea could be drawn against in this evening's Champions League draw in Turkey…

The draw begins at 5pm (UK time) today and will be shown live on BT Sport and via a stream on UEFA’s website. All six group fixtures will be played over an eight-week period this autumn due to the mid-season scheduling of the FIFA World Cup. That is usually only required for teams who have not been regular participants in European competition in recent years. Clubs earn points towards their coefficient based on how well they perform in the Champions League, Europa League and, from last season, the UEFA Conference League. For example, in the Champions League, clubs are awarded four points each for reaching the group stage and last 16, as well as two points for a win and one for a draw in the knockout stages. Pots 2, 3 and 4 are seeded based on individual teams’ standings within the UEFA club coefficient standing.

Atletico Madrid would consider themselves favourites in this group, but Napoli, Porto and Dinamo Zagreb won't be giving up any points easily. Both clubs are looking sharp domestically so will no doubt deliver two unmissable group stage matches. The draw which will see 32 teams placed in eight groups of four starts at 5pm (BST) on Thursday. The 2021 Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea was then scheduled to be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium venue but it was once again relocated to Portugal — this time Porto's Estadio do Dragao — just two weeks before to allow fans to attend. Our subscribers in the USA can watch it on Paramount+ and CBS Sports HQ. Teams from pot two are drawn, followed by pots three and four. Pot one contains the winners of last season’s Champions League and Europa League, as well as the winners of the top six divisions in Europe. Pots two, three and four are then determined by clubs’ UEFA coefficients. An evening that treads the line between pomposity and kitsch, replete with close-up shots of grinning club officials, is coming to Istanbul. Therefore, Celtic and Rangers could be drawn against an English side. That means, for example, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur cannot be placed together despite being in different pots. Each team can use a maximum of three stoppages in play to make substitutions, with one extra allowed in extra time. UEFA describes the launch as its “Standing Facilities Observer Programme 2022-23”. Champions League: Liverpool face Rangers as Haaland gets ... (The Guardian)

The Champions League draw has pitted Celtic against Real Madrid and includes a group featuring Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Internazionale.

“This award is really for everyone involved with the England team, the FA, the staff and most of all the players. Asked whether winning the Champions League for the first time was City’s priority this season after being eliminated by Madrid in the semi-finals last season after losing to Chelsea in the 2021 final, Soriano added: “No it’s never. Hopefully we’ll qualify for the World Cup and enjoy the game.” Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti won the men’s award, with Karim Benzema named as men’s player of the year. The difference this year is that the group stage will be shorter than usual, so we will have to be ready not just for the quality of the opposition but also for the different demands and rhythms. The Champions League is of course an aspiration but it’s not an obsession. Yet it could have been even worse for Rangers had former Bayern Munich and Turkey midfielder Hamit Altintop drawn them in a group that contained Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Internazionale.

The rest of the group is up for grabs, and Celtic, RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk will all have an opportunity to qualify. Both games will be emotional night given what is happening in Ukraine, but Shakhtar, which reached the last 16 in 2018, are not here to make up the numbers and will give Ancelotti's team a tough examination. FC Salzburg will embark upon their fourth consecutive group stage campaign and boast a forward line led by [Benjamin Sesko](https://www.espn.com.au/football/player/_/id/289155/Benjamin-Sesko). [Real Madrid](/football/team?id=86) last time out, who have since signed defender [Antonio Rudiger](https://www.espn.com.au/football/player/_/id/169438/Antonio-Rüdiger) on a free transfer. [Harry Kane](https://www.espn.com.au/football/player/_/id/142200/Harry-Kane) and Son Heung-min -- who know what it takes to thrive in this competition. They've had a shocking start to the season, with three defeats in three Bundesliga games and a loss in the German Cup against a third-division side. Porto will play with intensity and with confidence and will be difficult to play against, basically the complete opposite of Bayer Leverkusen. They seem to still be searching for their identity, and as a result, their attacking game is still a work in progress. It won't be easy for Klopp's and Spalletti's teams, but I expect them to go through with Ajax in third, while Rangers will get points on the board but not enough to make it to the Europa League.

Champions League 2022-23 draw: group stage analysis and ... (The Guardian)

All the English sides look a good bet to progress while Bayern Munich will provide a test of Barcelona's return to the elite.

Copenhagen are back in the group stage after a six-year hiatus. Those are not likely to arrive in the group stage though. Maccabi Haifa, in their first group-stage appearance for 13 years, are the lowest-ranked side in the competition. Juventus are desperate to return to former glories after finishing fourth in each of the past two seasons. For Barcelona, Bayern, who beat them twice in the group stage last season and inflicted an 8-2 defeat on them in the 2020 quarter-final, represent a useful test. Their success last season seemed less the result of any great plan than the finishing of Karim Benzema, the goalkeeping of Thibaut Courtois and an implacable self-belief. RB Salzburg reached the last 16 for the first time last season, but their existence remains Sisyphean, building a side and then selling their best talent: 10 players left this summer. Divock Origi and Charles De Ketelaere have arrived to bolster the attack, but the most significant transfer activity may be the departure of Franck Kessié. There’s been the usual summer flux at the Portuguese champions, with six players departing, among them Fábio Vieira to Arsenal, and four players arriving, but domestic form has so far been unaffected, with three wins out of three in the league. Sporting finished six points behind Porto last season and have already suffered a 3-0 defeat to them this season. With Erik ten Hag departed after five seasons that yielded a number of notable European results, Ajax are something of an unknown quantity under Alfred Schreuder, who managed Hoffenheim and was an assistant at Ajax and Barcelona before overseeing the end of last season at Club Brugge. Napoli, buoyed by the Georgian wonderkid Khvicha Kvaratskhelia , always represents a difficult trip, and the atmosphere at Rangers, back in the group stages after 12 years, is unlikely to be any less fervent.
