Champions League draw has elite 32-team line-up, no new names (Sportstar)

The Rangers name is now back in the Champions League after a 12-year absence, joining Glasgow rival Celtic in the group stage.

Each team gets a basic fee of 15.6 million euros ($15.5 million), plus 2.8 million euros ($2.78 million) per win and 930,000 euros ($924,000) for each draw in the group stage. The Champions League is even more concentrated in western Europe – and not just because of the Russia ban. The other 24 teams are seeded according to UEFA ranking based on European results in the past five seasons. The extra 930,000 euros ($924,000) left over from each drawn game is pooled and shared among teams who won games. The 32 teams from 15 different countries go into groups of four playing home-and-away round-robin games. The top two in each group advance to the knockout stage next year. A fund of 600 million euros ($596 million) gets divided between clubs according to their place in a league table based on historical European titles and results in the past 10 years. There is no such upstart this season, though some in Scotland would argue Rangers should count as a first-timer. Madrid has advanced every time. Maybe we will be lucky,” Shakhtar captain Taras Stepanenko said this week. Teams from the same country cannot be in the same group. The Rangers name is now back in the Champions League after a 12-year absence, joining Glasgow rival Celtic in the group stage.

Madrid will be hoping to defend their crown but will face another tough journey to the top. Ajax and Benfica will be their biggest tests in this relatively favourable group. Their toughest test in this group will be Conte’s former side Inter, who have started their Serie A season with two wins out of two. Despite their problems, they should still have enough to finish top in this group. Messi, Neymar, Mbappe and co are desperate to win this trophy as the Parisians are yet to get their hands on the European crown. A relatively easy group for [Thomas Tuchel](https://www.sportbible.com/thomas-tuchel)’s side and they should qualify as winners with ease. Sevilla have started the season poorly and will need to up their game if they are to qualify. Napoli and Marseille are expected to pose only a minor threat. The draw which will see 32 teams placed in eight groups of four starts at 5pm (BST) on Thursday. The 2021 Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea was then scheduled to be held at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium venue but it was once again relocated to Portugal — this time Porto's Estadio do Dragao — just two weeks before to allow fans to attend. Our subscribers in the USA can watch it on Paramount+ and CBS Sports HQ. Teams from pot two are drawn, followed by pots three and four. Pot one contains the winners of last season’s Champions League and Europa League, as well as the winners of the top six divisions in Europe. Pots two, three and four are then determined by clubs’ UEFA coefficients. An evening that treads the line between pomposity and kitsch, replete with close-up shots of grinning club officials, is coming to Istanbul. Therefore, Celtic and Rangers could be drawn against an English side. That means, for example, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur cannot be placed together despite being in different pots. Each team can use a maximum of three stoppages in play to make substitutions, with one extra allowed in extra time. UEFA describes the launch as its “Standing Facilities Observer Programme 2022-23”. Champions League: Liverpool face Rangers as Haaland gets ... (The Guardian)

The Champions League draw has pitted Celtic against Real Madrid and includes a group featuring Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Internazionale.

“This award is really for everyone involved with the England team, the FA, the staff and most of all the players. Asked whether winning the Champions League for the first time was City’s priority this season after being eliminated by Madrid in the semi-finals last season after losing to Chelsea in the 2021 final, Soriano added: “No it’s never. Hopefully we’ll qualify for the World Cup and enjoy the game.” Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti won the men’s award, with Karim Benzema named as men’s player of the year. The difference this year is that the group stage will be shorter than usual, so we will have to be ready not just for the quality of the opposition but also for the different demands and rhythms. The Champions League is of course an aspiration but it’s not an obsession. Yet it could have been even worse for Rangers had former Bayern Munich and Turkey midfielder Hamit Altintop drawn them in a group that contained Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Internazionale.

Both games will be emotional night given what is happening in Ukraine, but Shakhtar, which reached the last 16 in 2018, are not here to make up the numbers and will give Ancelotti's team a tough examination. They've had a shocking start to the season, with three defeats in three Bundesliga games and a loss in the German Cup against a third-division side. Porto will play with intensity and with confidence and will be difficult to play against, basically the complete opposite of Bayer Leverkusen. They seem to still be searching for their identity, and as a result, their attacking game is still a work in progress. It won't be easy for Klopp's and Spalletti's teams, but I expect them to go through with Ajax in third, while Rangers will get points on the board but not enough to make it to the Europa League.
