The Croatian made his comeback in Indian Wells in this March and had lost 8 of his 13 tour-level matches in 2022 before his dream run in Cincinnati. Coric hit his water-tight groundstrokes with consistency on return and gained the decisive break in the sixth game of the set against a tiring Tsitsipas. Coric showed signs of nerves in the opening exchanges, but started to settle as the set went on. The 25-year-old has now clinched three tour-level titles on all three surfaces, having soared to success on clay in Marrakech in 2017 and on grass Halle in 2018. But I started to serve better and play better and I was fighting hard,” Coric said in his on-court interview. The Croatian, who committed just 14 unforced errors, then fended off pressure from Tsitsipas when serving, before he broke again to earn the biggest win of his career. With the pressure on, Coric demonstrated courage against the Greek, rallying from 1-4 in the first set, before he blitzed his way past the fourth seed in the second set to triumph after one hour and 57 minutes in Cincinnati. 29 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings following his fairytale run, while he has improved to 2-1 in his ATP Head2Head series against Tsitsipas. 152 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

Borna Coric became the lowest ranked player to win a Masters 1000 title after upsetting Stefanos Tsitsipas to complete a fairytale triumph in Cincinnati.

Tsitsipas opened with a double fault and fell apart from there as Coric roared through the breaker by a 7-0 scoreline to pinch the opening set in one hour and two minutes. However, the underdog remained defiant and came through to consolidate before breaking again on his second match point to secure the biggest win of his career. The No.4 seed looked in complete control as he clinched an instant break, dropping just two points as he romped into a 3-0 lead. It is Coric’s third ATP title and his maiden one at this level having lost his only previous Masters final to Novak Djokovic in Shanghai back in 2018. Asked how he achieved the historic feat, Coric told Amazon Prime: "I’m not sure to be honest. So, I was very calm and focused.

And now Coric will be a part of it. With Djokovic and Zverev likely to be absent, the ATP free-for-all may continue in New York. The faster courts in Cincy seemed to inspire a more aggressive approach from this typically steady baseliner. Coric obviously knows his own game, but he may be short-changing his backhand just a bit in that analysis. 5 seed Cam Norrie in the semifinals, and the fourth-seeded Tsitsipas for the title. Learn how Borna Coric defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Controlling the Ad court with his solid backhand and heavy run-around forehand was always going to be the preferred way to wrestle control of points against Tsitsipas. Coric was simply more dominant from the back of the court. The Croatian felt at home standing in the Ad court crushing backhands and using his run-around forehand to hit high and heavy back cross court. Tsitsipas raced to a 4-1 lead after 16 minutes of play on the back of making his first 16 backhands of the match. In fact, Coric’s average backhand speed was just one mile per hour slower than Tsitsipas’ average forehand speed (71 mph), and almost as fast as his own forehand (72 mph average). The engine room of Coric’s game has always been a rock-solid backhand, and he led with his strong suit to win his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title.

The qualifier broke again in the first game of the second set, leading Kvitova to head off court for an injury timeout. “We made it clear which way I have to play, which direction I have to go,” Garcia said afterwards, referring to her new coach Bertrand Perret and her team. His first ATP title since 2018 sees Coric jump up the rankings to No 29, and earn a seeding for the US Open, which starts on 29 August. Caroline Garcia became the first qualifier to win a WTA 1000 event while Borna Coric is the lowest ranked ATP Masters champion in history.

Coric has always been a big-game player and was tipped for stardom from an early age after winning the 2013 US Open junior title. The 28-year-old, twice a French Open champion in doubles, beat top-10 ranked players Maria Sakkari, Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula en route to her straight sets victory over Kvitova. Coric, a former world number 12 who dispatched Stefanos Tsitsipas after beating Rafa Nadal, Cameron Norrie and Felix Auger-Aliassime en route to the final, was ranked 152 in the world when the tournament began after spending most of the season feeling his way back from a shoulder injury that had sidelined him for a year.

The Croat's straight-sets win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Cincinnati final blows US Open draw wide open.

And so could Kyrgios, who backed up his run at Wimbledon with a title at the ATP 500 event in Washington. Doing so within months of his return on tour is even more sensational, given the recent struggles faced by Major champions like Andy Murray and Dominic Thiem in making their returns. Even at 50% fitness, Nadal will come into the US Open as the favourite. Carreno Busta, a two-time US Open semifinalist with the Canada Masters title under his belt, may also have a say. The fast courts in America’s midwest aided the changes the Croat has been forced to make following shoulder surgery. In 2018, he won the grasscourt title in Halle by beating Zverev and Roger Federer. As recently as July, the 25-year-old lost an ATP Challenger first round to World No. Yet, as the final Major of the year nears, none of them have taken advantage of Nadal and Djokovic falling away. The Croat is still entering tournaments through a protected ranking after he spent 13 consecutive months between February 2021 and March 2022 away from the tour with a bad shoulder injury. His attempted comeback this year was going to take time, despite a few ATP wins. Much was expected from men’s tennis at the start of the 2022 season. He defeated Medvedev at the US Open, and Stan Wawrinka, Juan Martin del Potro, and Federer again on his way to the final of the Shanghai Masters later that year.
