Luke Rockhold has seriously dropped off in recent years after being tipped by many to enjoy a dominant reign over the middleweight division like Ander.
With the fame came outside influences that, in hindsight, appear to have had a detrimental impact on his fight career. During this time, Rockhold enjoyed a brief romance with popstar Demi Lovato. It’s certainly a tough return opponent for Rockhold, who will surprise many if he is able to stand up to the punching power of ‘Borrachinha’ as he has one of the best KO records at the weight in recent years. The man who went on to win the 205lb title after it was relinquished by Jon Jones, put Rockhold to sleep inside two rounds and left the former middleweight king contemplating his future in the sport. Three years later and after lots of time spent flirting with the idea of retirement, Rockhold is finally set to return to fighting when he takes on top middleweight contender Paulo Costa at The 6ft 3in American was signed to a modelling agency and began subsidising his UFC income with work outside of fighting and he ultimately found success with it – bagging himself a contract with Ralph Lauren in 2018.
Visibly exhausted following a wild opening round, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold used every drop of blood and sweat to make it to the finish ...
"He created a lot of shots on the face and the chin. Rockhold even drew cheers from the crowd in the final minute by rubbing his bloody face against Costa's head. "This energy came through from this audience and it was amazing," Costa said. The third round was as insane as any in recent memory. Instead, Rockhold began loading up on every single shot and slowly timed Costa with counter left hooks and spinning kicks to the body. Surprisingly, Costa shot for a timely takedown that saw him move to mount.

UFC commentator Jon Anik discusses the stakes in the UFC 278 co-main event bout between Paulo Costa and former champ Luke Rockhold.
You see in terms of Rockhold’s physical recovery, he has put a lot of resources and finances into making sure that he is ready to go. I just don’t know where Rockhold is at mentally, and where his chin is physically. This is very interesting because both guys have lost two consecutive fights, and I think you can argue that Paulo Costa has underachieved a little bit relative to the expectations coming in — even though he’s just getting going in a lot of respects, when it comes to his career, the championship performance against Adesanya was very underwhelming, and obviously, the follow-up act against Marvin Vettori wasn’t great either. “If social media is an indicator, then clearly the hay is in the barn, a lot of hard work has been done on the strength and conditioning side. I just feel like there’s a lot more variables on the Rockhold side and that’s why he’s a +250 [or higher] as the betting underdog this weekend. I think that’s the rub for a lot of people in this fight: if Luke Rockhold can take a shot or two, work his game, and potentially creating some grappling transitions because we know how good he is on top with his ground and pound, we’ll see. He didn’t defend the belt successfully a singular time, but in terms of potential for greatness, I think some people would argue it’s still engrained in Luke Rockhold. I don’t know if that’s necessarily the case, but where is Luke Rockhold’s chin? Since then, “The Eraser” was crushed by Adesanya in his first title opportunity at There’s a lot of different balls in the air, but absolutely [Rockhold can earn a title shot]. “It’s a great question and there’s no doubt about it,” Anik told MMA Fighting. “Luke Rockhold is 37, so the time really has to be now, even though he’s the guy — unlike Paulo Costa — who has the UFC undisputed championship belt on the mantle at home.
