By the end, it's impossible to care about any of these people or what has happened to them, other than to hope the talented cast puts it behind them ...
The main problem with “Echoes” is the most common TV problem of the current era—it doesn’t have the story to support a series. The main secret (in a show full of them) that drives the narrative is that Gina and Leni have been switching places every year on their birthday, allowing one to live the mirror life of the other. It’s a shame because, again, some of the cast is up for the challenge of a twisty soap. Leni stayed back in Virginia and married her high school sweetheart Jack ( [Matt Bomer](/cast-and-crew/matt-bomer)). For four episodes, “Echoes” defiantly makes almost no sense, and not just in a traditional thriller/mystery nature but because of shallow writing and choppy editing. Sadly, the potential of “Echoes” starts to drain before the premiere is even over as it gets goofier and goofier in a way that’s not entertaining but frustrating.

Michelle Monaghan plays identical twins who constantly switch lives. Matt Bomer also stars in this limited series.
And when it’s revealed at the end of the first episode that Gina is really Leni, we’re left scratching our heads; we still weren’t clear which sister Monaghan was currently playing and which left. As she goes looking for Leni in some of their old haunts from when they were kids, including a local cave, we find out that Gina is actually Leni; the two regularly switch lives. Gina goes to the house where she grew up, where her father Victor (Michael O’Neill) lives with her younger sister Claudia (Ali Stoker), who completely resents Gina for leaving. The Gist: Gina McCleary (Michelle Monaghan), an author in LA, is very close to her identical twin sister Leni (also Monaghan), who is a horse farmer in Virginia. The folksy sheriff, who was a deputy when Gina left town under extreme circumstances, knows what she’s been through and relates the story to deputy Paula Martinez (Rosanny Zayas). It’s more than just wanting to help, though; the two of them are so connected that she wouldn’t know what to do if Leni was no longer around.
The season finale of 'Echoes,' the eerie drama starring Michelle Monaghan as a pair of identical twins, has left fans with a lot of questions.
Leni makes a run for it and manages to catch a flight to Australia using a fake passport that Gina had had made when she was planning to run away with Dylan. Charlie asks the woman if it was her at the book reading and she says no, but we are never sure if she's telling the truth. We then cut to Leni being interviewed by the police and it is revealed that Gina is presumed dead. Leni stalks Gina through the woods and tells her she wants it to be just the two of them again. Gina then tells Leni that Victor had drowned his wife at her own request; she was sick and wanted to die on her own terms. This revelation shocks Leni, as her mother's death has been the reason she has wanted to keep Gina so close all these years. This led to Gina feeling betrayed by her sister and her husband as she began her year in Mount Echo. Gina tried to distance herself from Leni as a teenager, moving to Los Angeles, meeting Charlie and embarking on her career as an author. She also discovered that her husband Charlie had known all along about her and Leni switching lives, and had been writing about it. The fall led to Claudia needing a wheelchair and ruined her relationship with Gina. The sisters have switched lives every year on their birthday and the "Leni" who has disappeared is actually Gina, who has put in place an elaborate plan so she can run away with her high school boyfriend, Dylan, whose baby she is carrying. At the beginning of Echoes we are introduced to Gina McCleary, a successful author who lives in Los Angeles with her husband Charlie Davenport (played by Daniel Sunjata).

Netflix's latest thriller series Echoes starring Michelle Monaghan has a lot of moving parts to keep track. Our recap guide breaks down every episode.
Leni ditches her Gina clothes, puts her hair in her trademark side braid and starts heading back toward the farm, stopping to knock herself out with a big rock so she can make it look like she really has been lost and injured in the woods for days. So, Leni is the one who goes into the cavern and finds that Gina has left her several mysterious clues, including more doll parts, clothes and the book she wrote called Echoes. After calling Charlie from her car, Gina looks at the doll again and gets a sneaking suspicion related to a tree in the front yard with a pair of swings. A series of flashbacks shows that Gina and Leni often switched places, as kids, as teens and… She pushes him off of her and goes to the waterfall, stepping into a cavern hidden behind it. She relays the weirdness of the situation to Charlie. She goes digging into the tree hollow and finds one of the doll’s missing arms with a small cross charm tied around it. Gina goes into Leni’s old bedroom and finds a doll that appears to hold some meaning to her, except its been torn apart. If you thought the tension between Gina and Floss was bad, it’s even worse between her and Claudia. However, the twins have made sure to leave some key pieces of the puzzle out of reach, making for a gripping and shocking binge-watch. According to the town rumor mill, Gina is the troubled one, not Leni, though she does mention that there is “more than one story,” which will be a theme throughout the season. There’s also tension between Gina and the Mt.
"Echoes," the latest Netflix thriller drama miniseries, perhaps has an interesting premise, but its delivery stretches the line of conviction way too many.
Inside the forest, Gina tells Leni what she has learned from Victor and tries to tell her that what she saw was not really true, but Leni does not seem to buy it. However, Gina now reveals that it was Leni who had actually pushed her, and that she had then convinced her to exchange roles with her. Leni returns to her house, but Jack is furious with her actions over the past, and he clearly tells her that she is no longer welcome in his house or life. Knowing very well that she would not be able to survive long, Victor had drowned and killed her in a bathtub, just like she wanted him to do, but young Leni had seen this happen but never talked about this to anyone. It was now that she told Dylan everything about the switch of lives that she and her sister did every year, and then Dylan told her the real truth about everything. When Dylan left, Leni convinced Gina that he was the one who had caused the fire, and had fled town because he was guilty; she, therefore, painted Dylan as the villain. The police now start to investigate the whole scene, and Leni receives a call from Gina, who tells her that the horse dealers are chasing her, thinking that she is Jack’s wife. Leni calls up Dylan and asks to meet him, and finds out that the man has been storing a lot of money in his cabin, along with a fake passport for Gina under a different name. Meeting with the best friend Meg, Leni (briefly posing to be Gina) finds out that the two had had a terrible disagreement sometime in the past year, and Gina (as Leni) had even threatened Meg over something. Although Leni is back to her familiar surroundings, it is not really an easy homecoming for her, as she has no idea about whatever happened in the last one year between her and the people close to her, as Gina was playing her role during this time. Leni then gets hold of all the call records and messages that were sent from the number and finds out that Gina was up to selling ketamine illegally to drug dealers and that she was also having an affair with an old lover of theirs named Dylan James. When her husband and daughter come out to greet her, people she has not seen for the last year as she was living as her sister in LA, Leni tells them that she had seen three or four men steal horses from their stable and had followed them when she lost control of her own horse and hurt herself badly.
