Julian Assange lawyers sue CIA over alleged spying (The Guardian)

Suit alleges CIA and its ex-director Mike Pompeo violated US constitutional protections for confidential discussions.

“The information contained on the plaintiff’s devices was copied and, ultimately, given to the CIA,” it reads. The suit alleges Undercover Global, which had a security contract with the embassy, swept information on their electronic devices, including communications with Assange, and provided it to the CIA. The suit alleges that the CIA worked with a security firm contracted by the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where Assange was living at the time, to spy on the WikiLeaks founder, his lawyers, journalists and others he met.

And we found in that process a series of documents that they prepared about my meetings with Assange.” Passports, mobile phones, cameras, laptops, recording devices and other electronic equipment were turned over to the security guards in the lobby. Debra Hrbek, a media attorney who represented WikiLeaks journalists and videographers, addressed the press conference as a plaintiff, “I visited Julian Assange at the Ecuador Embassy in London and few times during his stay to discuss sensitive legal matters. It’s a terrible thing and it's treated by the United States courts as a terrible thing.” That fundamental principle applies to searches and seizures directed toward US citizens by US law enforcement anywhere in the world. The judge in that case dismissed the indictment for gross misconduct.

A group of lawyers and journalists are suing the CIA, alleging that their privacy rights were violated.

Under the Espionage Act, Assange could be sentenced to 175 years in prison. Roth said that the alleged spying would mean that Assange’s right to a fair trial had been “tainted, if not destroyed”. Still, lawmakers have alleged that the agency maintains a clandestine database with such data.

All of this was recorded then given over to the Central Intelligence Agency,” attorney Robert Boyle claimed. He fathered two sons with his now wife Stella, which he managed to keep secret from the rest of the world. However, the suit focuses only on the spying carried out against US citizens who visited Assange in the embassy. Roth said the suit was being brought under the US constitution’s Fourth Amendment which he said applied to American citizens regardless of which country they were in at that time. At a press conference in New York on Monday, Assange’s US lawyers said the suit alleged that unbeknown to even the Ecuadorians who granted Assange asylum, the data on their phones and other electronic devices was copied and handed over to the CIA.

The US intelligence agency is accused of recording lawyers' conversations with Assange and copying the data on their mobile devices.

The charges against him could result in a prison sentence of up to 175 years. They claim that the CIA worked with a security firm hired by the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where Assange had taken refuge under political asylum, to spy on the WikiLeaks founder, his lawyers, journalists and others he met. The lawsuit accuses the CIA of recording lawyers' conversations with Assange and copying the data on their phones and computers.
