Cameron Smith, the third-ranked player in the FedExCup, has withdrawn from the BMW Championship because of a hip injury.

“He has been dealing with some on-and-off hip discomfort for several months and thought it best to rest this week in his pursuit of the FedExCup.” Smith finished T13 at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship. Scheffler and Smith were paired in Thursday’s first round, and the former raised eyebrows when footage circulated of him walking directly in front of Smith as the latter tried to line up a putt. Smith, who was reportedly heckled as a “sellout” during the St. Jude, did not make himself available to the media after shooting a 70 in Sunday’s round. After initially expressing some unhappiness that the question would come up immediately after his biggest moment, Smith said, “I don’t know, mate. Not in the St. Jude field were three players — Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford — who had accumulated enough FedEx Cup points to qualify for the playoffs before jumping ship to LIV earlier this summer. Before the Memphis tournament got underway last week, several noteworthy PGA Tour players criticized their former colleagues for taking legal action after accepting the Saudi-backed huge sums to play elsewhere. If nothing else, had the 28-year-old Smith won the St. Jude Championship, he would have risen to No. 1 in the world rankings. At least in theory, if Smith earned the $18 million check that goes to the playoff winner, he could consider it a massive parting gift before officially joining LIV. “When I asked him the question, unfortunately, he said to me, ‘No, the ball was definitely touching the line.’ So at that point, there’s no turning back.” … Cam is a complete gentleman, and he took it that way. The sequence began Saturday at the par-3 fourth hole of Memphis’s TPC Southwind when Smith hit his tee shot into water. The British Open champion and one of the tour’s best young players, Smith had already sparked plenty of talk last week when the Telegraph reported that he agreed to a $100 million deal to become the latest big name to defect to the rival LIV Golf series. “Too obvious!”

He will not, however, be making it to the BMW Championship in Delaware this week as his team announced Monday that he will be sitting out with some “hip discomfort” that he’s been experiencing lately. A statement from the PGA Tour read: "Prior to the start of the final round of the FedEx St Jude Championship, Cameron Smith was assessed a two-stroke penalty for a breach of rule 14.7 (playing ball from the wrong place) on hole number four during the third round as he was operating under rule 17.1 (when ball is in penalty area). Smith, though, was labouring four shots off the pace after copping a cruel, retrospective two-stroke penalty for playing a ball from the wrong place on the fourth hole in round three. Scott's four-under-par 66 vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard at 11 under midway through the final round in Memphis on Sunday and sealed his participation in next week's BMW Championship, the second event of the PGA Tour's FedExCup playoffs.

The BMW Championship took the place—and the history—of the long-running PGA Tour event known as the Western Open that dates to 1899. A victory in this week’s BMW Championship for those not already invited or finishing among the top 30 in FedEx points following this week earns an automatic invitation to the Masters. The PGA Tour’s playoffs continue with this week’s BMW Championship, being played for the first time at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings have qualified for the tournament, which will have no 36-hole cut. The 2023 tournaments leading up to the Masters as well as the top 50 in the world two weeks prior are the other ways to get in. That was a moment where I know that the player has knowledge that the ball was touching the line, he just simply didn’t understand the rule that requires the entire ball to be outside of the penalty area and in his relief area.’’ But he can use a one-time exemption for being among the top 25 money winners all time on the PGA Tour. The biggest difference being employed is something called a strokes-gained (SG) world ranking for each player which is based on their actual scores in stroke-play events adjusted for the relative difficulty of each round played over that two-year period. Such rules issues are in play for the entirety of the tournament and can be revisited as long as the final book on the tournament is not closed. There are no minimum points for various tournaments—an improvement that means all will be awarded points based on the strength and depth of their fields. All of this was set against the backdrop of Smith’s reported impending move to LIV Golf at the conclusion of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Even though the round was long finished, it was not in the eyes of the rules—unlike other sports, where once you move on to the next play, it’s done. “So we did take a second look at it and sure enough, we felt it was really close to the line, if not touching and possibly on the line.

Cameron Smith WDs from BMW Championship, citing hip injury (GolfDigest.com)

Cameron Smith has withdrawn from the second event of the FedEx Cup, citing a lingering hip issue.

With Smith’s departure the BMW Championship field is down to 68 players. He had arrived at TPC Southwind with a 54-hole score of 11 under par, before PGA Tour rules officials corrected his score to nine under. The withdraw from the BMW comes amid reports that Smith is soon departing for LIV Golf, reports that Smith has not necessarily quelled with multiple non-denial denials. Smith plans to tee it up at the Tour Championship finale at East Lake. The 28-year-old is determined to become the first Australian to win the FedEx Cup title. "My hip flared up yesterday. "I've had a couple of MRIs around it, and I will check with my team to see if we need another one."

That would put Smith at six under to start the tournament, four shots back of the FedEx Cup leader. But had Smith acknowledged the alleged move, he likely would have been suspended or banned from the Tour and unable to to compete for the $75 million in FedEx Cup bonus pool money. Smith was given a two-stroke penalty for an improper drop he had taken early in the third round. “He had been dealing with some on and off hip discomfort for several months and thought it best to rest this week in his pursuit of the FedEx Cup.” “I’m a man of my word and whenever you guys need to know anything, it’ll be said by me.” Smith’s agent seemed to indicate that Smith still intends to compete at the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week, to try to win the $18 million first place prize for the FedEx Cup.
