Can they win it all?! Magpies' 11-game streak snapped as Swans close to top-two finish: 3-2-1.

In more worrying signs, Brayden Maynard appeared to nurse his right shoulder after the Papley goal. De Goey had been in excellent touch since returning to the Pies side two weeks ago with 23 and 25 disposals respectively in wins over Port and Melbourne. “Collingwood have been held to three goals in a half of football – that’s music to the ears of the Swans coaching department.” “You’ve got to hand it to Sydney. They suffocated the Pies when it mattered,” commentator Brian Taylor said. The Swans slowed down the game – a contrast to the way the Magpies love to play. Hoskin-Elliott was sent back to the bench after copping a second blow to the nose for the match. Paddy McCartin was penalised for the tackle and the controversial Collingwood forward slotted it to the boos of the crowd to narrow Sydney’s lead to 15 points. The Pies just couldn’t win the footy in their front half as Taylor said they were “getting a bit of a bath from the Sydney defenders”. It took a Jack Ginnivan goal from a high tackle free kick to give the Pies a sniff. Tom Papley broke a tackle and got the crowd back to their feet with the Swans’ third goal of the day. Mihocek appeared to cop a cork in the process of kicking the goal in worrying early signs for the Pies. In front of a record home crowd, the Swans overcame a Magpies fightback in the third term to claim the 11.11 (77) to 7.8 (50) win.

But apart from that, I think we’re really, really strong with what we had to do at the contest and when we didn’t have the ball and that laid a good foundation for a pretty strong four-quarter effort.” Tom Papley and Isaac Heeney in his 150th game both kicked two. “We gave up a couple of easy goals. They made it really hard to score, they’re a very good team,” McRae said.

He threatened to demolish the Magpies in the first half, but ended up playing his role amongst a well-oiled machine in attack. Jack Ginnivan also injured his hamstring just before half-time and was subbed out at the main break. Sydney made a fast start and dominated the opening quarter, kicking four goals to two but should have led by more at the first break. It was built up internally as one of, if not the biggest home and away game in 20 years and it didn’t disappoint. 44,659 is the third-highest AFL crowd at the SCG, and when you consider the average NRL game is 15,855, it highlights just how big this is. De Goey starred against Port Adelaide and Melbourne after recovering from a quad injury in recent weeks. The 26-year-old hurt himself at training on Friday but travelled to Sydney and was on the SCG at three-quarter time of the VFL game, but didn’t return in a major blow for Craig McRae’s men. The McCartin brothers – Paddy and Tom – were enormous behind the ball, as was Robbie Fox and Rampe. It wasn’t quite the record of 46,362 that packed in for an elimination final in 2017, but it came close. The game was sold out earlier in the week and was always going to come down to how many members turned up. James Rowbottom, Callum Mills and Chad Warner got the job done around the ball.

'Ahead of time': Longmire's Swans in 'box seat' for AFL flag shake after extraordinary turnaround.

“It happens time and time again across the course of the game, from where Collingwood wants to get numbers to where the football is. “He’s a super talent, this guy, he’s a Norm Smith Medallist type of player. I think the Swans have come ahead of time to this position. “He’s clearly a dominate force in that forward line... We’ve sort of always raved about their defence, particularly with the (Paddy and Tom) McCartins, but what I’ve been impressed with is they’re continually improving their contestable pressure game. It’s hard to win in Sydney.”
