T13. Cameron Smith (-9): He was the betting favorite overnight, but before even striking a golf ball Smith saw his name drop from 11 under to 9 under. Capturing a top-20 finish, Thomas ranked fourth in strokes gained tee to green courtesy of exquisite efforts both off the tee and around the green. Finishing his St. Jude Championship with a round of 4-under 66, Rahm captured yet another top-10 result in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and may be one to keep an eye on for the BMW Championship. He was his normal, steady self from tee to green around TPC Southwind, and the lack of course knowledge for players at Wilmington Country Club may aid his efforts on the greens relative to the competition. Nearly winning in his third straight start, the four-time PGA Tour winner must be on the shortlist of potential players to raise the trophy at East Lake. As it has been for the past month, Finau's game was strong throughout the bag and could be on the cusp of a postseason run. He should have plenty left in the tank as he looks to climb inside the top 30 next week at the BMW Championship before serving as a veteran presence for the International Team at the Presidents Cup in September. 2. Sepp Straka (-15): Coming into the week off six consecutive missed cuts, if you told Straka he would have a 9-iron in hand with a chance to win the tournament, he would have taken it in a heartbeat. While his bogey on the 72nd hole may make dinner taste a bit sour, in the grand scheme of the postseason, it was an extremely clutch performance. This is especially true of Zalatoris, as it was never a matter of "if" he would win on the PGA Tour, but rather "when." His moment finally arrived at TPC Southwind. With his St. Jude Championship title, he has ascended to the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings. With Zalatoris' tee shot finding ( and inexplicably staying on) the rocks in the hazard on the par-3 11th, it set the stage for Straka to claim his second PGA Tour title of the season. Now, he has the potential to follow in the footsteps of Patrick Cantlay and sprint through the finish line at East Lake and raise the FedEx Cup crown. Since then, he has added heartbreak after heartbreak, losing in a playoff to Justin Thomas at the PGA Championship and just missing out on one at the U.S. Open. Inevitably, it felt this would happen again after his tee shot on the final playoff hole, but the golf gods had a way of intervening.

Will Zalatoris won the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship in a playoff for his first PGA Tour win.
“The second at the PGA was kind of affirmation that it wasn’t a fluke of a week, and the third one at the U.S. Open gave me that much more belief that I can win a major, I can win out here. He vaulted to No. 34 in the points standing and was among the top 70 to advance to the second playoff event at next week’s BMW Championship. “The first second at the Masters was life changing because it put me in position to play out here as much as I wanted to and put me kind of on the map,” Zalatoris said. “I think I’ve always had the attitude of the job’s not done and as great as it is to pull this off, I still feel like I’ve got some unfinished business going forward,” he said. “I couldn’t get the club on the ball,” Zalatoris said. Both Zalatoris, a Wake Forest product, and Straka, a Georgia grad, converted short birdie putts at the par-5 16th to climb to 15 under. Straka, 29, who snapped a streak of six missed cuts and hadn’t played on the weekend since the Memorial in early June, made birdie at the 12th to tie Zalatoris for the lead at 14 under. Zalatoris made a bogey at No. 7 but regained the lead with a birdie at 10. After much deliberation, Zalatoris elected to take a drop, too, rather than risk hitting against the rock retaining wall. Stock served as Zalatoris’s sidekick for the first time since Zalatoris and his longtime caddie, Ryan Goble, parted ways in the middle of last week’s Wyndham Championship. The 25-year-old reigning Tour rookie of the year shot a final-round 4-under 66 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, and became the second player to win his first tournament in the playoffs, joining Camilo Villegas, who did so at the 2008 BMW Championship. Ranked No. 14 in the world entering the week, Zalatoris already had a fruitful season, which included eight top-10s, the most among players without a win. “It’s kind of hard to say ‘about time’ when it’s your second year on Tour, but about time,” Zalatoris said.
While it's not as hot Saturday in Memphis, the dry fairways at TPC Southwind prevent anyone from breaking away from the field.
"You look at the names, I mean, those guys, major champions and multiple winners and you've got really hot golfers that are, you know, just playing really good," Spaun said. I played well here last year and got some good vibes running around this place." "You know, I love playing this place. "Yeah, it's a tough course. But it's predominantly more obscure players populating much of the scoreboard. The jammed-up leaderboard sets up a potential Sunday barn-burner with a tournament-record $2.7 million prize on the line.
