Star recruit inspires Cats to minor premiership; 'Aker' statement amid $4m whisper: 3-2-1.

“He’s a very talented player, but he strikes me as a guy that might be better under the pressure. The only concern was No. 1 ruck Rhys Stanley, who was subbed out of the game in the third quarter with a lower leg injury. Sometimes a player like him – how hard is he really working and getting the best out of himself? While Stengle’s ability to hit the scoreboard was superb, his awesome workrate was also on display. “He’s got an unbelievable ability to make something out of nothing. You look at his consistency in games and it’s not quite there yet. The Cats led by 51 points at the main break. As well as the three goals, Stengle had a game-high nine disposals and three marks in the first quarter. Stengle continued to build his case for AFL recruit of the year against the Suns, sparking Geelong to a fast start at Metricon Stadium. Cameron missed a chance for a third goal, which left the door ajar for Gold Coast to peg a couple of goals back, which came via Jarrod Witts and Sam Flanders. Rhys Stanley was subbed out of the game before the quarter commenced, but he appeared to be running freely prior to the move and could be seen smiling after one of the club’s trainers spoke to him on the ground. Stengle then plucked a rare contested mark and snapped his second as the Cats kicked out to a 33-point lead.

Eye-catching Geelong Cats seal minor premiership on the Gold Coast (The Age)

Geelong's relentless march towards September continues, the Cats notching their 12th win in a row against the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium – and ...

Caleb Serong was target No.1 early on, with Jack Redden doing his best to ruffle the feathers of the Fremantle star. Rankine is the subject of feverish trade speculation; his two goals showed why Suns teammates are pleading with him to stay. Sign up for the Real Footy newsletter. With just one home and away match against West Coast to come, Geelong looks perfectly balanced. Mark Blicavs was immense, too, and he often stood Suns co-captain Touk Miller at centre bounces and around the ground. Decimated by injuries in defence, where they’ve lost their best ball-users in Lachie Weller and Wil Powell, their turnovers were frequent, and punished instantly. “There’s a toilet out the back of the coach’s box, and we were next to each other, having a chat. The Suns surged briefly after the break, but Geelong quickly killed the contest, then cruised through the final quarter for a 10-goal win. The Suns were also dying of self-inflicted wounds. Andrew then swapped places with Sean Lemmens, who’d been sent to man Tom Stewart as a defensive forward. But you’ve got two choices … you can fight that feeling [or] you can live with it and embrace it. It’s not often that happens, so we had a bit of a laugh about it.

Cats wrap up top spot with total eclipse of Suns (AFL)

WITH Jeremy Cameron putting on a show, Geelong has wrapped up the minor premiership, outclassing Gold Coast by 60 points at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night.

It's hard to not be drawn to Touk Miller. The Suns' co-captain is currently the joint leader, with Lachie Neale, of the AFL Coaches' Association MVP award and will surely add to that tally again tonight. Not long after, it was Izak Rankine – who was hard to miss with his dyed-white hair – who produced a show-stopper. His gawdy numbers tell only a part of his story, with his work-rate burning opponents up and down Metricon Stadium. Cameron finished with 21 disposals, including three goals, bringing him closer to the top of the Coleman Medal race. From a stoppage in Geelong's forward 50, Tom Hawkins tapped the ball perfectly into the path of Tyson Stengle, who gathered without breaking stride and somehow from deep in the right forward pocket threaded it through for a magnificent goal. Jeremy Cameron put together another spectacular performance, roaming from his key forward post to the wing to the midfield and everywhere in between. The Cats were in no mood for a close contest, kicking seven goals in the first quarter and rarely letting up, running out 18.11 (119) to 9.5 (59) winners.

'Masterclass' locks up minor premiership (NEWS.com.au)

Geelong have extended their winning streak to 12-straight on Saturday as they toppled the Gold Coast Suns on the road.

Rankine is set to accept an offer of $900,00 a year to be the highest paid Crow and Adelaide supporters would have enjoyed his first quarter goal that included a spin in traffic and cheeky right-foot checkside for a goal. He also won a free kick with a crunching tackle and went within a fingernail of a second goal as his performance lived up to his haircut. In what could be their last match outside of Victoria for the year, Geelong cruised to a 17-4 record on the back of an inside 50 entry landslide of 72-43.

Geelong v Gold Coast - The Analyst's Corner - The Mongrel Punt (The Mongrel Punt)

The Cats were far too good for the Suns at Metricon in Round 22. Jimmy Day dissects this one in The Analyst's Corner.

Some players rise to the occasion, some are found out, and some sit somewhere in the middle. He may have turned the ball over, but then would lay tackles and try to ensure he at least nullified the contest. The big forward for the Cats, Tom Hawkins, was all over the shop in front of goal, with many shots not mustering a score. The ground was heavy, and players found the going tough in the early part of the game. The Cats adjusted faster, which is probably down to experience and maturity – after all, geriatrics have been around long enough to familiarize themselves with different conditions and so were able to hurt the Suns on the scoreboard. Credit to the Suns, as their effort was through the roof and they quickly kicked the opening three goals of the term to eat into the sizable deficit. While they were building and harassing the Cats, a run-down tackle by Brad Close on Touk Miller changed the momentum. On a heavy ground, torn up due to the weather, the Suns hosted the Cats. On the day they were celebrating their members and giving Gary Ablett life membership to the club, the Suns were looking to equal their most wins ever in a season. The Suns fought it out, but showed that they still need some experience to help around the ground and to make better decisions. Rankine, up the other end, was a relative one-man band for the Suns in the first quarter. Stengle was in everything – tackling, setting up others, and finishing with 3 goals for the quarter himself. Meanwhile, the Cats were looking to make it 12 in a row and solidify their place on top of the ladder.

Stanley set to miss a week, Scott embraces expectation (AFL)

Gold Coast's Izak Rankine cleared of serious injury while Geelong coach Chris Scott embraces the September pressure as the Cats chase an elusive flag.

More comfortable, but not as exhilarating." "Not often that happens. "It's just a great position to be in where you feel a bit of the tension, we're embracing the pressure that's going to come our way.

Cats All Business On The Gold Coast (Geelong Cats)

Geelong captain Joel Selwood had a simple message for his men prior to the Cats' clash with the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday: be professional, get ...

“You mention the young guys, obviously it was Zach Guthrie's 50th he's really stepped up, Brad Cloase, I could name them all. Mark Blicavs (27 disposals, six marks, two goals), speaking to Fox Footy after the game said the plan was to challenge the Gold Coast defence by taking the game on and getting it into Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins as quickly as possible. The Cats were all business in the first term, seemingly in a hurry to put the game out of the Suns reach, piling on seven first quarter goals to eventually run out 60 point winners, and securing the minor premiership in the process.
