She goes along with it for a little bit, but then before the Winter Dance, which she asks him to but only for him to reject her, she tells him she can’t be his secret hookup. Eleanor, Devi and Jonah come to the rescue to hype Fab up about being the gay that she wants to be, since she has felt torn between robotics and Eve’s queer friends since the beginning of the season. Devi has to deal with Ben and Aneesa flirting while they come up with her argument, and Paxton wants to take the work seriously for once with Fab while Malcolm volunteers to dress up as Jay Gatsby’s ghost in order to avoid doing work. To bump her grade up from an F, the gym teacher asks Devi to put together a team to participate in the school’s 24-hour cross country relay. When Aneesa starts bonding with Mr. Kulkarni the English teacher (Utkarsh Ambudkar), who Devi previously had a strong bond with over ethnic reasons, because he also happens to be the soccer coach and Aneesa plays soccer, Devi starts to fume. She tries to break it off with Ben at first because her friends encourage her to go for Paxton, but Ben asks her to be his girlfriend. So, let’s address the elephant in the room with Never Have I Ever season 4. So, for fans mourning one of their favourite shows, it’s worth knowing that Never Have I Ever wasn’t cancelled, it’s just that the writers feel the show must come to a conclusion when Devi’s high-school career does. Since then it has earned a passionate fandom that is thrilled to see it return for a third season on Friday, August 12th 2022.

Which means that Devi and the gang can routinely find themselves in grown-up situations, only for the series to avert its eyes. This doesn’t mean that Never Have I Ever has to suddenly throw its characters into an Euphoria-adjacent universe to be ‘serious’. Nor does it need to be as forthright about intimacy as Netflix’s own Sex Education. It might be hard to believe, but all three shows are about people roughly the same age. For some reason, series creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher seem to working under the assumption that the show will face an existential threat if it’s not actively pushing Devi into a love triangle of some sort. With nowhere to turn, the show decides to manufacture new obstacles for Devi to overcome. And as weird as this might sound, losing her virginity is Devi’s primary goal this season, as she emerges from the grief of losing her father, and the emotional toll of dating two boys simultaneously last season. The culturally specific observations that made it such a breath of aromatic air in seasons one and two have been replaced with the staleness of a generic high school comedy.

At no point do creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher forget the core storyline of Never Have I Ever, which is family, nor do they forget the subtle desi elements infused without being too preachy. Devi's character sketch this season is spearheaded by her (many!) love affairs and that isn't necessarily a bad thing because it's through these romantic liaisons that Devi is able to understand the real meaning of self-discovery. Picking right off where the previous season left us, Never Have I Ever Season 3 sees Devi finally having her dreams come true: dating the hottest guy in college aka Paxton (Darren Barnet)! However, Devi swiftly realises that it's never good to judge a book by its "six-pack" cover and that her pursuit to belong is different from what she really wants in life. When it comes to the performances in Never Have I Ever Season 3, it's ultimately The Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Show as the young actress truly cements her confident standing with a heartwarming performance as Devi, a character who gives "complicated mess of emotions" a bad name, but in the best of ways! While the first two seasons of Never Have I Ever heavily focused on Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) navigating her teenage dirtbag years, driven by overwhelming grief, the third season of Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher's series is dominated by love... With its crisp and witty approach over 10 episodes, does Never Have I Ever continue being the desi binge-watching show of our wildest dreams?

In the season finale, it looks like Devi might reconcile with Paxton, but in a surprising turn of events, it’s Ben’s doorstep she ends up on! Following her breakup with Paxton in episode 3, the show jumps ahead a few months and it’s clear that while Paxton has finally moved on, Devi still is harboring feelings for him. After two seasons of will-they-won’t-they tensions, Devi and Paxton officially entered season 3 as a happy couple after making their debut as a couple at the end of season 2.

This is a Ben Gross-centric episode, which means Andy Samberg narrates for Ben. Who knew stress-induced constipation could be so funny? Well, Mindy Kaling did.

(That is a hilarious line). His jealousy grows, especially when he realizes that the reason is Devi looking at him and making pointed comments about his cell service. Yes, Ben is, in fact, full of s**t because he has not had a bowel movement in 16 days. Devi looks at him in a way that makes the Popstar wonder what “the dick is going on?” That’s when McEnroe steps in and gives him an update. That’s when Devi spots Des in the kitchen, and she is dressed in a hoodie and pajama bottoms. Des is the guy Devi was dancing with at the party (and who has been ghosting our girl). While this happened a couple of weeks ago, Ben was vomiting in the bushes at Trent’s house at the exact moment.
