Laal Singh Chaddha movie review: It's not just the pace of the film which is the trouble. It is also, centrally and crucially, Sardar Laal Singh Chaddha ...
It’s only when Laal Singh Chaddha leaves the dull shackles of his mannerisms, and hits the road, passing by some of the most spectacular sights that India possesses– the intense blue Ladakh lake, the shimmering Himalayan night, a scenic Southern coastline– that he starts to grow on me. And Kareena Kapoor Khan, as Rupa, the love of Laal’s life, desperate to put her painful past behind, infuses real feeling into her part. When we first come upon Laal Singh Chaddha, he is in a train, holding on to a box of gol-gappa, or pani-puri, and a backpack full of memories. It is also, centrally and crucially, Sardar Laal Singh Chaddha himself. But it is the train which gathers speed, not Laal’s meandering tale, which only kicks in towards the last half hour. Soon, though, Laal succeeds in drawing in the disinterested woman across him, and then the entire compartment.
Let us not even go into the implausibility of how a trained Indian Army soldier cannot differentiate between his own brothers in the Army and the enemies.
Sure, there are the usual Bollywood mouthpieces singing praises for the movie, but since the movie releases just ahead of a long weekend, it may even pick up the pace and get some commercial success. After the opening, it seems the movie has taken liberties with the storyline to peddle Aamir Khan’s usual anti-Hindu propaganda that he is known for. The good terrorist is shown doing Namaz, (Lt Dan was an atheist and he later made peace with God, that was one of the best sub narratives in Forrest Gump) and our Laal Singh declares that Puja Path is useless, they only spread ‘malaria’. And thus, Gary Sinise’s legendary, historic character from Forrest Gump becomes an Islamist terrorist, a ‘good’ person apparently because that is what Aamir Khan and Atul Kulkarni the writer wants Indians to swallow. India Today’s review of the movie has called out Aamir Khan’s bad acting performance. Aamir Khan’s comeback film Laal Singh Chaddha has been given a thumbs down by several critics.
Laal Singh Chaddha release: The film has released across 3500 screens in India, which includes Tamil and Telugu markets.
Film trade analyst Sumit Kadel also weighed in and gave the film a two-star rating, calling it "a poor adaptation of Forrest Gump." Kadel wrote, "LSC is a poor adaptation of Forrest Gump, it lacks soul and emotions of the original classic... Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh gave the Aamir Khan film a two-star rating and said that the film disappoints on several fronts. Secondly, the market in the South for Hindi films is usually soft, even for an Aamir Khan movie." Users, however, had a mixed take on the film. It is not an original film like PK which people will rush to watch Aamir Khan in. Even if a small section of the potential audience who get affected by the trends don't show up it is a loss for the makers. Trade expert Ramesh Bala said the film does not have the originality factor going for it since it is a remake of the 1994 classic Tom Hanks. He said, "Firstly, it is a remake of a Hollywood movie, Forrest Gump, which most people have seen. The film has way too much riding on its shoulders -- hopes of reviving Bollywood coupled with Aamir Khan's superstardom. Talking of the first day first show, the film opened to mixed reviews at the box office. Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha has released in theatres today. Also, the screen count has been reduced for the film, which further impacts the overall business." The film has released across 3,500 screens in India, which includes Tamil and Telugu markets.

On the other hand, Laal Singh Chaddha sees our main protagonist narrating the unforgettable moments from his celebrated life with random strangers inside a train. However, he dies during the Vietnam War and Forrest Gump honours him by delivering his promise and starting Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. In Laal Singh Chaddha, we have Naga Chaitanya's Bala, Laal Singh Chaddha's best friend, who wants to get into the Chaddi Baniyan business like his father and grandfather and great-grandfather. In Laal Singh Chaddha, it's a young Shah Rukh Khan, who is inspired by Laal Singh Chaddha to do his iconic, signature open arms pose, which could leave anyone weak in their knees! However, he dies during the Kargil War. Laal Singh Chaddha fulfils his promise and kickstarts Bala Chaddi Baniyan, which quirkily changes to Rupa Baniyan, named after Kareena Kapoor Khan's Rupa, Laal Singh Chaddha's love interest. From the Vietnam War to the Watergate Scandal, Forrest Gump covered many iconic US history milestones in the movie, as it was based on Winston Groom's 1986 novel of the same name. *SPOILERS ALERT* Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir Khan's labour of love has finally released!

The signature brilliance of Aamir Khan seems to be missing in the dialogue-led scenes, but he puts his strengths to test with the scenes where there are no dialogues. Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya seems to be a little lost in the film. The film’s director Advait Chandan, who has been a long-time collaborator of Aamir in different capacities, has done justice to Kulkarni’s script. The script has been penned by actor Atul Kulkarni, who has worked with Aamir in ‘Rang De Basanti’, and is his dear friend. Much like its original, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ tells the story of a simple man and how he sails through life with his goodwill and values. His success ratio only adds to his massive credibility as the superstar who rarely fails, barring of course in few exceptions such ‘Mela’ and ‘Thugs of Hindostan’.

Watch Laal Singh Chaddha for ace performances from Aamir and Kareena and that cute kid. Though the track with Manav Vij and Laal touches your heart and doesn't look forced in the script. The particular sequence set against the drop back of Kargil War could have been written and shot in a much better way. Called Mr Perfectionist for a reason, Aamir gives his 100% and delivers the best he could to the character written for him. Complimenting Laal is the flawless Kareena Kapoor as his love interest Rupa D'Souza, who looks beautiful in every frame. The box of chocolate gets replaced by a box of golgappas.

The trailer of the movie received mixed reactions, with people criticising Aamir’s Punjabi accent as well as the similarity to his expressions in PK, where he played an alien.
This Indian adaptation of “Forrest Gump” doubles down on its Pollyanna hero, substituting different historical touchstones.
(Laal is Sikh but only barely grasps these violent events.) The famous box of chocolates is reimagined, sweetly so: life is now like a golgappa (a crisp fried treat). In the film’s framing device, Laal (Aamir Khan, the star of the 2001 crossover hit “Lagaan”) recounts his life story to passengers on a train.
Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya. Director: Advait Chandan. Rating: 3 stars (out of 5). Reworking a 1994 Hollywood drama ...
On the train, Laal narrates his life experiences to a receptive bunch of listeners. The bus stop bench of Forrest Gump is replaced here with a train compartment - rail voyages are known to fuel many a timeless story in this diverse country. This lovely sequence - a wonderfully localised twist that is bound to bring an unadulterated smile to every lip - stands in for the Elvis Presley encounter that Forrest Gump has with the future King of Rock & Roll in his mom's boarding house. The film, adapted from Eric Roth's original 1990s screenplay, indigenizes the plot in interesting ways and finds points of departure that, more often not, strike a chord. India is in the midst of a level of social and political turmoil that it has rarely encountered since it gained independence. Since Laal Singh Chaddha is an official remake, the storyline is known. It is the changes, minor and not-so-minor, that keep one's interest alive. Laal shakes off his leg braces as a boy when chased by a trio of bullies on their bicycles. At the personal level, too, he is undaunted by the challenges that life throws at him. That is exactly what the conservative-minded Forrest Gump had attempted to do (with a great degree of success) in the US of A in the decades following the disastrous Vietnam War and the fallout of the Watergate scandal. But given its overall intent, Laal Singh Chaddha does serve a significant purpose: it celebrates humanity in the face of hate and discord. Reworking a 1994 Hollywood drama centred on the Vietnam War into an Indian story that pans out over several decades later wouldn't have been a cakewalk.
'The film shows we should only exist as cured of our disability,' says disability advocate.
It is a film for the whole family.” It is a feel-good film. It is a wonderful story about this character. “These mobility aids give freedom to so many of us. Like our mobility aids are some kind of crutch that need to be shed off immediately.” According to local reports, Laal Singh Chaddha has been filmed in more than 100 Indian locations.
'Forrest Gump' screenplay tweaked to suit Indian palate, but lacks the spark.
This also comes as a surprise given that Aamir is so involved in all his projects and that he claims to have his finger on the pulse of the "audience and the market." Aamir's heavy heaving in the last scene when Roopa introduces Laal to his son, demands an answer: Is that the only way of showing the gravity of your emotions? In the character of Laal, Aamir looks like PK, and to a certain extent like Rancho from 3 Idiots. It appears that all he does in order to get into the skin of Laal Singh Chaddha is to arch his eyebrows, bite his lips and tighten his shoulders. So the point is to watch Laal Singh Chaddha for what it is, that is minus the knowledge of the original. But in each of those, Kareena stands out so beautifully, that you want to root for Roopa. Here, Laal does appear to be acting stupid, although it is only his expressions that convey that feeling; he does nothing to prove it. When one hears some of the most iconic dialogues form the original, being reiterated in Hindi/Punjabi in the adaptation, one cannot but cringe. One cannot but help think about that student who, while copying from another's exam paper, just gets so engrossed in taking it down word for word under the pressure of time that he forgets to put the answers in his own words. Given that this happens to be his first film in a gap of four years, there's a lot at stake for Aamir this time around. From the very first, opening sequence when a CGI feather leads to Laal with a small red box full of 'golgappe' in his hand with the water contained separately in a bottle, we see how the screenplay has been taken frame to frame and then tweaked in to suit the Indian palate with loads of history, facts, fictionalised drama and more. References are made subtly to different aspects of pop culture so as to give the viewer an idea of the context playing out on screen. But while the original keeps you totally immersed and gripped, the remake does not come anywhere close to it.

On August 11, the producers might be in for a major shock if the spot bookings are not in line with expectations. “Disappoints,” Tweeted Taran Aadarsh giving the movie a two-star rating. Let’s get the facts right… In fact, yesterday, a day prior to the release of the movie, Taran Adarsh also shared that the advance bookings of Lal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Rakshabandhan are way below expectations.
After a spate of box office duds coming from Bollywood, a lot is riding on the fate of Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan.
While Bollywood’s performance has been dismal, four successive super-hits from the South—Pushpa: The Rise Part-1, RRR, KGF: Chapter 2 and Vikram (to a much smaller extent in Hindi as Vikram: Hitlist)—have grossed more than Rs 3,000 crore worldwide, including nearly Rs 800 crore in Hindi net collections. On the other hand, Raksha Bandhan is estimated to open with Rs 9 crore on day one and may end up reporting lifetime collection of Rs 80-90 crore. We maintain that Hindi Box Office is slated to decline 22 per cent (vs pre COVID levels) in Q2FY23, as content has been below par so far and we are already the end of first half of the quarter, with no film reporting a positive surprise,” he said. His only hit during this period has been Sooryavanshi (Nov 5, 2021), which was made on a production budget of about Rs 160 crore and earned a net lifetime collection of Rs 196 crore in India and Rs 295 crore gross worldwide collections, according to Bollywood Hungama. Elara Capital’s vice president Karan Taurani says expects Laal Singh to have a stronger opening with Rs 16 crore, and a lifetime collection of Rs 150-160 crore. Seven of the top 10 grossers in this span were from the South, pegs Ormax Media data. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says they are both costly, big-banner and well-mounted films, which are coming when Bollywood is reeling under the pressure of losses. Raksha Bandhan, on the other hand, saw advance booking of 35,000 tickets sold for Day 1 at the box office with a total collection of approx. The film is produced by Zee Studios and director Aanand L. Rai at an approximate budget of over Rs 70 crore. In terms of all India sales, the film, which is an official remake of the hit Hollywood film Forrest Gump, has sold approximately 57,000 tickets for the opening day. For last few weeks, the film was facing social media backlash and boycott calls because of old statements of Aamir Khan, who has also produced the film along with Viacom18 studios. Over the next eight days, there are four holidays owing to Raksha Bandhan, a long weekend including Independence Day, followed by Janmashtami and Parsi New Year which may be partial holidays.
The opening day occupancy of both Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan have been way below expectations, ringing alarm bells across Bollywood. | Bollywood.
Films have seen growth through word-of-mouth, most notably The Kashmir Files, but bigger tentpole films like Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan work on strong opening days, which looks like a stretch here. The one thing working for the two films is positive critical reception, which both have received. The advance bookings of Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan are way below expectations... Trade analysts say the figures should improve over the weekend but 60-70 percent occupancy looks unlikely, which means the films will struggle to post huge opening weekend numbers. Now, sources say that the opening day first shows have seen remarkably low attendance for both films. This release day (August 11) was thought by many to help revive the Hindi film industry with two big releases in Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. With Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar headlining the two films, many expected the films would break the rut – of Bollywood non-performers.

The business of Laal Singh Chaddha might drop on Friday, and the fate of the film will depend on how well it trends on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Independence Day). With this start, a big total is ruled out and now it’s all about reaching a face-saving number in the longer run. In the morning, it seemed as if Laal Singh Chaddha would end around the 10-crore mark, but the biz did pick up towards evening shows in the multiplexes. Lal Singh Chaddha’s length puts our patience to the test. In the original movie, the character of Bubba was so endearing and amazing that he left an indelible impression on our minds. His portrayal is reminiscent of his past roles in PK and Dhoom 3, which does not fit the eponymous character. Aamir’s performance resembles caricature on screen due to the overexpansion of his eyeballs. Kareena Kapoor Khan also provides an essential impact on the performance level. Lal Singh Chaddha’s story depicts the character’s life-changing adventure, which finally debuted on the big screen.

Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha collected just about INR 11 to 12 crore on its first day at the box office.
Laal Singh Chaddha has been released in a week full of holidays and hence it is important that the film marks an unbeatable trend in order to cope up with the loss borne on the first day. At first it looked like the film would only reach around the INR 10 crore mark, but the evening shows helped a lot in crossing the INR 12 crore mark. Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha collected just about INR 11 to 12 crore on its first day at the box office, which is reportedly considered a low start by the makers of the film, reported Pinkvilla.

Laal Singh Chaddha collected Rs. 10.75 cr nett on its first day, which is a fifth of his last big ticket release Thugs Of Hindostan. The numbers in East Punjab have been excellent but the film has not performed optimally, elsewhere. It was an extremely poor day at the box office for the two big Bollywood films that released in theatres yesterday, namely Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. Both films were expected to draw audience to theatres on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan, but failed miserably. Both films ran at an average occupancy of 25 percent throughout the day and this is despite coming on the same day, which should ideally result in higher occupancies.
Forrest Gump is one of those rare conservative films that I manage to like for its sentimental value. My political reservations against the touted classic ...
The star of the film is Atul Kulkarni, who has adapted the screenplay. The adaptation of Jenny in Rupa is evidence of the lack of understanding men have for women. Shahrukh also faced scrutiny for his performance in My Name is Khan, but it is still a better performance in a better film. The one element where it becomes criminal is the performance by the protagonist. Aamir is earnest in a couple of moments, but otherwise, he parodies disability and churns a mockery to mimic a bit and diverge a bit from Hanks’ performance. In this way, Laal Singh Chaddha is as inherently patronizing as Forrest Gump. When the war occurs in Forrest Gump, it becomes a matter of survival for the elite American forces against the guerilla force of the enemy. No. In the end, Laal also stands for the most rational choice for those involved, as did Forrest Gump. Laal is also made to be the optimum candidate for familial and professional responsibilities. When the war occurs in Laal Singh Chaddha, it becomes a matter of survival for all involved. The primary reason is the absence of a counterculture movement in India. India was never liberalized in any shape, despite all political turmoils. Laal Singh Chaddha is what Forrest Gump poses to be. The problem lies when the man, a protagonist, becomes a personified argument from the side of the filmmaker.
The adaptation, is so trained on making a play for the audience's tear ducts that there are hardly any instances that will make you laugh.
Williamson’s Benjamin Buford “Bubba” was infused with more seriousness in the original, as opposed to Chay’s Bala, who brings on some of the most genuine — and much-needed — laughs in Laal Singh Chaddha Or, of course, Rupa’s “Bhaag Laal bhaag” — like the original’s “Run Forrest run”, which emerges as a clarion call for its protagonist, in more ways than one. Over the years, Forrest Gump’s problematic messaging and smug and unrealistic portrayal of reality as well its dumbing down of American history has come in for some amount of criticism. Instead, what we get is a largely overdone and inconsistent performance, a bit of which will remind you of him in PK and a lot of which will take you back to him in Dhoom:3. For a large part, it is nothing more than a series of grunts and tics. Gump inadvertently, and evoking some genuine hilarity, caused Nixon’s Watergate Scandal, provided ‘inspiration’ for John Lennon to score his iconic number Imagine and invested his money in what he called “a fruit company”, which, of course, turned out to be Apple. Forrest was winningly superimposed onto many an event with far-reaching historical consequences. The adaptation, however, is so trained on making a play for the audience’s tear ducts that there are hardly any instances that will make you chuckle.
Without touching the inviolable essence of innocence in Forrest Gump, Laal Singh Chaddha outdistances the original, not because Aamir Khan runs faster than ...
It is interesting to see how the original has been adapted to the Indian milieu. The making of ‘Tur Kalleyan’ from its music to the video was long and overtaxing at times. And Laal names the lingerie business after Rupa. Yes, the Rupa brand of underclothes is owned by Laal Singh Chaddha. So is Shah Rukh Khan’s signature step with his hands stretched out. Atul Kulkarni’s screenplay takes us through stretches of Indian history encountering milestones ranging from the 1974 Sikh Riots to Sushmita Sen being crowned Miss Universe. It is a clever engrossing adaptation and one that leaves the original behind. He believes if God has given you more money than you need, then you must pass it on to the needy. It just gets to you pretty much from the start when we meet the over-protected little Laal struggling with a leg disorder that doctors say, could leave him crippled. Except what his mother (played by Mona Singh who is no patch on Sally Field in the original) has taught him: to ingratiate himself to everyone he meets. Soon, the entire compartment is hooked to Laal’s narration. And I don’t mean just the panoramic sweep of Nature’s bounty that cinematographer Satyajit Pande brings to every frame. The makers of Forrest Gump should be more than happy with what writer Atul Kulkarni, director Advait Chandan and Aamir Khan have done to the original. But it is Rupa, played by the ethereal Kareena Kapoor Khan, for whom Laal’s pure-as-gold heart beats. But here is a remake, a re-creation if you will, that actually surpasses the original.

Aamir Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha has tanked at the box office with its opening day collection being abysmal. | OpIndia News.
YouTuber and film enthusiast Dewansh Singh Rajput published a video review of the film on his YouTube channel in which he made some worrisome allegations against the film. According to Bollywood pundits, an Aamir Khan movie should have ideally had an opening of Rs 30 crores. Earlier, when PR agencies were doing on overdrive trying to show an uptick in advance booking, Taran Adarsh had tweeted sounding a warning that people should not believe the hype that has been created. The movie is said to be doing better in Delhi and Punjab but has failed miserably in the rest of the country. The movie’s opening and just how badly it did is evidenced by the fact that the opening was worse than the Kabir Khan directorial, 83, and the Farhad Samji film, Bachchhan Paandey. On the other hand, the movie did not even come close to opening days for movies that have been mega hits this year. It is reported to be the lowest opening that an Aamir Khan movie has seen in the past 13 years.

Both the films also faced a section of social media’s boycott calls, which both Aamir and Akshay have addressed. Laal Singh Chaddha, according to BOI, is performing similarly to December’s large-scale sports drama 83, which made around Rs 14 crore, but underperformed at the box office because of a new wave of the pandemic. Raksha Bandhan was one of the many Akshay Kumar projects that were completed over the pandemic with breakneck speed. Box Office India says that Laal Singh Chaddha made Rs 10.75 crore on its opening day, which was described in the report as ‘shocking’. Bollywood Hungama said this will be the lowest opening for Aamir Khan in the past 13 years.
